how to make a wig that won't fall off your oddly shaped dolls head!
reposing this of DoA so non forum members can enjoy the benefits of this tutorial that i made c:
PREREQUISITES: know what the back stitch is if not learn it, it is very simple!
YOU WILL NEED:
-wefts, enough for a wig of desired size
-elastic about ½ cm or ¼ inch in thickness, I would not suggest going thinner
- 2 way stretch lace or netting, make sure it does not have any parts that are too delicate, it helps if it at least vaguely matches the hair colour
-needle, pin(s) and thread in matching colour to hair
-hair dryer (very important!)
-sharp scissors
-clean plastic bag
-a knitting needle or thin paintbrush end or anything else with a small diameter
-any hair styling products you use to stile doll hair
and a DOLL
Start by putting elastic around the dolls head where you would want the hairline to be, not to tight or you won’t be able to put the wig on, and not to loose or it won’t stay on! If your not sure go for looser as you can still tighten it after the wig is done :D
Cut and sew the elastic together.
After you finish that take the edge of your stretch lace fabric and put it under the elastic:
Cut the piece off but don’t trim it yet just in case
Using a loose back stitch sew the elastic and stretch lace together WHILE it’s still on the doll
We will be using the back stitch specifically because it will allow the wig to stretch!
Trim off the access fabric
Turn it inside out so the elastic is touching the head: chances are it has more grip then the lace you used so it will stay on better!
Start with the bottom weft still using the backstretch , TUCK in the weft end that is near the edge, this will discourage the wig from loosing hair
Continue doing so, depending what style your going for you will attach the hair differently.
I am going for a wig with a long back and short hair at the front with a flare where it’s shorter at the back.
To achieve that you will need short wefts that curve
Sew the hair on until you reach about the ear point
To this point I have been sewing the hair on with the curl facing down
next sew a weft or two (depending on weft thickness) with the curl facing up
And sew one facing down again
After this point you can just sew one long weft in a spiral or do it by pieces whichever you feel more comfortable with
Sew wefts all the way around until you only have a little hole left
Now we need to make a topknot!
Taking a thin paintbrush end (any thin non textured thing will do ) I start winding a weft around it
Pull it as tight as you can!
Take a needle and thread and sew it together so it stays rolled up
Keep on rolling it until the diameter is about as big as the hole left and secure it with thread so it doesn’t unwind
It should look something like this:
When you wind it up make sure the weft is facing the right way
After your sure that it won’t unwind, slide your thumb along the paintbrush/whatever you ended up using to the middle of the top knot
Hold it tightly, with your thumb pressed over the top while you blow-dry it like this:
How do you know you won’t melt the hair? if you can put your hands under the fan the hair can go under it too
It should look something like this:
It doesn’t need to be perfect just enough for you to be able to find the middle
Take your wig and flip it inside out and line the topknot up with the empty space
Sew around in a circle and as close as possible to the last weft that you attached to the wig
Now the sewing part of the wig is done :’D
Lets flip it out and see what we have
Looks quite silly, but that’s because were not done!
Brush out the hair and put your hand around the wig a much as you can like this:
Blow-dry it again; it doesn’t take a lot of heat to secure it in place so don’t over do it
Now you have something you can actually work with!
Cut, trim and style to your liking, I’m not going to show how I did it since that could be a tutorial all on it’s on
But i will give you this advice! before you start cutting the wig put a plastic bag over the head so you won’t accidentally trim the eyelashes too!
Here is the end result:
