Dusty Shelves - A tale of two bookshops from Niki Radman on Vimeo.
Shot in early March 2018, this short documentary tells the stories of two of Glasgow’s independent second-hand bookshops. Edmund McGonigle of ‘Voltaire & Rosseau’ and Charles McBride of ‘Caledonia Books’ offer a glimpse into their day-to-day as they continue the tradition of second-hand bookselling in the West End of Glasgow. ___
Due to CoVid-19, independent businesses are facing a particularly hard time trying to stay open. Our original intention in making ‘Dusty Shelves’ was to create a sort of ‘slow film’, an informative yet calming alternative to the overwhelming noise and informational overflow of our era. At the same time, we wanted to draw attention to the independent booksellers who face a daily struggle in competing with corporations and internet giants. We think that the eventual release of this film – which, itself, was growing increasingly ‘dusty’ in the limbo between production and post-production – could not have come at a better moment. Independent businesses have never needed us to support them more than now. We hope this short film inspires you, too, to do just that. If nothing more, we hope you find a little enjoyment and calm in it. ___
