I really headcanon Emily Charlton as having Emily blunt’s eyesight. She offhandedly mentions she wears glasses to Andy once and Andy thinks they’re reading glasses and then finds out Emily cannot see ANYTHING. She wears contacts in public because she hates the way glasses look on her but she also finds contacts incredibly uncomfortable so she has her glasses on 100% of the time when she’s at home.

Day 1 - Jealousy

I’m not done. Can we talk about how Andy spent the entirety of the first devil wears Prada movie talking about how the job is hard but she can’t quit because it’s such a massive opportunity for her career only for her to quit at the end because of Emily.

Of course there were other factors like Nigel but the breaking point was the realization that she had betrayed Emily and that was something that clearly went against her own moral code. She’s literally “lecturing” Miranda on how wrong she thinks what Miranda did to Nigel is and then the moment she realizes she did the exact same thing to Emily she just can’t stand it anymore. She literally throws away all her months of hard work because she couldn’t stand to know the job turned her into someone who betrayed their loved ones for her own benefit.

(Also side note I just think it’s kinda hilarious that most of Andy’s life changing moments in the last third of the movie happen because of Emily. The fight that lead to her breaking up with Nate literally started because he heard she was going to Paris and went “I thought Paris was a big deal for Emily” 😭)

is. CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW CRAZY THAT IS. CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW EMILY JUST NEARLY STOLE AWAY THE JOB MIRANDA DEDICATED HER ENTIRE LIFE TO AND CONSEQUENTLY PUT ANDY’S ASS ON THE LINE TO AND ANDY STILL DIDN’T THINK ANYTHING BAD OF HER.

Andy is the only person other than Miranda that actually had the right to think of Emily as “persona non grata” for the shit she pulled and she DOESN’T. And she has no reason to because it’s not like Emily has been the nicest to her or like they were friends. She just likes Emily that much. And she thinks Emily is going to get her shot at being whatever it is she wants to be. And she hears Emily say she screwed up and all she says is that it’s ok and that everyone screws up. EVEN THO EMILY LITERALLY BACKSTABBED BOTH HER AND HER BOSS.

Used to write fanfiction when she was in hs/college. Was really good at it too

Insanely good at drawing and painting which she picked up during high school

Did not play about a fever you can’t sweat out by panic at the disco circa 2006

On that topic, has an old emo rock cd collection. She doesn’t add to it anymore cuz it’s 20 years old but she never gets rid of it and revisits them from time to time.

Amazing cook

Is really annoying when it comes to ordering things out at restaurants. Think Sally from when Harry met Sally.

Is strangely good with shit like biology and chemistry. Wanted to major in something science related when she was younger but ultimately decided she wanted to work in fashion. Is not quite sure what the pipeline was. It is very useful when it comes to helping her kids with homework.

Doesn’t want to go to therapy but has been keeping journals pretty much her entire adult life. Finds her journal from 2006 and there are a billion pages just complaining about Andy.

Is touchy when she’s comfortable with someone. Clingy drunk with Andy specifically

HATES loud noises

Gets overwhelmed very easily

Mindlessly hums while getting things done around her house

They LOVE trying out new restaurants and bars together

They also love going to Broadway shows together. Emily is more of a play girlie but Andy converts her to the world of musicals. Especially Sondheim

Emily is always stressing over Andy’s sleeping habits and always reminding her to drink water and eat something when Andy’s working on a big work project. Emily had to stop with her own crazy habits because of her kids.

They share clothes a lot (or rather Emily shares her clothes with Andy because she would never put on anything on Andy’s wardrobe)

Big cuddlers. 90% of the time when they’re at home they will be snuggled together somewhere

Emily is still “mean” to Andy even after they get together. Not as much as she used to be before then but she still will not let Andy catch a break (all in good fun though ofc)

Andy’s love languages are physical touch and words of affirmation. Emily’s are gift giving and quality time.

They can read each other very well and sometimes will just sit in comfortable silence after one of them has a bad day at work

Weekly movie nights. Sometimes with the kids and sometimes just by themselves. Emily is always extremely critical of the movies they watch

Emily reads out some of her old journal entries complaining abt Andy during their wedding vows

Emily says she wants to read her vows first because Andy’s a writer and Em wants to delay crying all her makeup off. She starts crying during her own vows so it’s pointless

I’ve said this one before but big spoon Emily and little spoon Andy. Though I do think they switch it around sometimes

Bonus: Bronwyn brings home a stray cat and Emily is vehemently against the idea of keeping the thing but Andy and the kids gang up on her so the cat stays. Her name is something utterly ridiculous the kids picked out. She tries to avoid the cat as much as it can but the fucking cat chooses her and eventually she grows awfully attached to it. Andy gets fake jealous over how much attention Emily gives the cat. The cat is ginger because of course it is.

We must remember Emily (2006 Emily at least) is just as much as a rambler as Andy. I LOVE the scene where Andy has to call her to tell her about [REDACTED] and Emily picks up and starts going on non stop about how chaotic her day has been so far.

The difference between them is that Emily apparently only rambles to someone she’s comfortable with

We must also remember Emily fidgets with her hands when she’s feeling vulnerable. The keeps picking up the menu and pressing her thumbs on it and interlacing her fingers and hugging herself through the entirety of the restaurant scene with Andy

It makes me a little bit sad that in the first movie they were Emily and Andrea to each other and then when they got a little softer for each other it was Em and Andy

Even lying in a hospital bed crushed by her broken dreams that in that moment she feels like Andy stole, Emily still calls her 'Andy'

Then in TDWP2, Emily calls her 'Andy' the whole time and Andy only ever calls her 'Emily'

But then again if Andy had called her "Em" in the restaurant scene or something I think I would've passed out in my local cinema, so maybe it's for the best.

Goddddd I think about this ALL the time but I’ve made my peace with it by deciding Andy perceives “Em” as a Friend nickname and she only used it in the first movie when they were having bonding moments or Emily was being nice to her. Emily is kinda cold on Andy for the whole second movie (another post to be made on that cuz I also think abt it often) so Andy doesn’t dare using a nickname like that on her. Plus the fact they’re both 20 years older.

Emily however seems to have completely replaced the name “Andrea” with just “Andy” in her mind 20 years ago and therefore just calls Andy that.

Now that I’m thinking about it, I think the only reason she called her “Andrea” at all was because Andy never really did the whole “my name is Andrea but everybody calls me Andy” thing with her… probably because Emily actually knew her name unlike Miranda lol 😭 and so Emily just rolled with Andrea for the majority of the time. Which means she started using a nickname for Andy when she started allowing herself to warm up for her. Which is now making me want to throw up a little.

Anyways, this was gonna go in a whole other direction but I had this realization abt Andy never actually introducing herself as “Andy” to Emily and Emily knowing her as “Andrea” because that’s the name she got from HR. How fun

Emily is so touchy with Andy

And this is all under the guise of exasperation. (but really she's being gay for the new loser girl, love of her life)

But then they get to the charity benefit together, they're on "Andy" and "Em" terms and Emily is exhausted, and sick, and starving and maybe enjoys Andy's company more than she wants to admit. Andy who just got very competent very quickly and makes Emily's job easier and who packs tissues in her clutch because she knows Emily would never do that for herself. Andy who keeps doing selfless things like that for no reason other than to make Emily a little happier. Emily isn't exasperated then, she just wants to be close to her because she likes her, at least a little bit. So she's softer, and she stands a little closer than necessary because she just wants to be close to Andy, thinking maybe it wouldn't be so bad to be friends with her after all.

And then Andy touches her for the first time. And oh, that hits a little different than Andy just letting her touch her and lean on her without saying anything. That's a choice Andy made. Andy who just saved Emily's job is staring at her like she hung the stars in the sky and decided that she was worth holding for a second too. People don't look at Emily like that and they don't decide that she deserves to be touched kindly either. At this point she really wants to be friends with Andy.

And then Emily gets hit by a taxi and Andy steals her dream from her and quits her job while she's in Paris and Emily is so upset. So upset that she could be stupid enough to think she could have maybe made a friend. And then Andy calls her and gives her all the Paris clothes. An olive branch, one that Emily accepts immediately with tears in her eyes because despite it all she missed Andy Sachs. Maybe there's still a chance? So she calls Andy, and Andy doesn't pick up. And that's when Emily decided she was never going to make any friends in this fucking industry ever again.

Then Andy Sachs waltzes straight back into her life after 20 years with the audacity to look happy to see her and after all is said and done she calls Andy (who picks up this time, damn her) again to invite her to lunch. Needing closure, Emily asks about that phone call that wasn't picked up 20 years ago and she's forced to admit that she wanted to be friends. And when she says that? Well, she rubs her arm where Andy held it all those years ago because it's the last time she'd ever let her guard down enough to trust someone that much. And it's the last time she'd ever been touched that kindly. And she wants so badly to trust Andy enough to let her do that again because she misses her more than she's ever missed anyone.

But right now she can't even bring herself to hold Andy's hand. Not yet, because if she held Andy's hand and Andy disappeared again she might not survive it.
