The person who died after a security guard at a Sacramento apartment complex reported shooting at two suspects he said were armed last week has been identified. The shooting happened last Thursday at The Crossings apartments, an off-campus student housing complex near Sacramento State. Early that morning, a guard patrolling the complex reported to police that he shot at two people who appeared to be armed with a gun. While no suspects were found at the scene, police said two people with gunshot wounds later showed up at the hospital. One of those people later died from their injuries. Detectives believe those two people who showed up at the hospital are related to the shooting at The Crossings. On Tuesday, the coroner’s office identified the person who died as 19-year-old Sacramento resident Timothy Apole. The other injured person suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police have previously said. Police have responded to The Crossings at least three times in the past few weeks for crimes. In July, officers responded to reports of a robbery and on a separate occasion an assault where the suspect was armed. That same apartment complex was also the scene of a 2020 officer-involved shooting that left a suspect dead. https://www.instagram.com/p/CSsHWyrpLxH/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Department of Motor Vehicles is warning Californians to be wary of “unscrupulous used car sellers” as they shop online. In a release sent out Tuesday, the DMV said there has been an increase in stolen vehicles and fraudulent used car listings. A shortage of new vehicles has driven people to purchase used cars and offer more money for them, the DMV said. Thieves have taken that as an opportunity to use sites and apps like Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp to sell stolen vehicles with fraudulent titles. They will usually entice buyers by listing the stolen cars far below market value and saying they have already received several offers from other prospective buyers. According to the DMV, that means buyers should ensure they’re triple-checking the cars they’re eyeing. They advise anyone looking online for a used car to get a vehicle identification number history report or ask the seller to provide one, then compare that information with the vehicle that’s being sold. Buyers should also compare the name of the owner on the title to the name of the seller. When seeing the vehicle in person, the DMV recommends buyers insist on meeting the seller either at a local DMV office or a local law enforcement location. “With an increase in stolen vehicles being sold online, we are reminding consumers that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is,” said DMV Director Steve Gordon. “Californians planning to make a large cash purchase of a vehicle from someone they do not know should proceed with caution.” Anyone who has fallen victim to a fraudulent used car listing can call DMV Investigations at 661-836-2291. https://www.instagram.com/p/CSaCFTzh9o9/?utm_medium=tumblr
An interrupted burglary at a residence in Auburn turned into an attempted murder case, authorities say. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office says, back on the afternoon of Aug. 2, a man had returned to his Timberline Villas home and found the front door was open. His stuff was sprawled about – and a strange car was also parked in the driveway. Deputies say the resident went up to confront that person in the driveway, but that’s when the suspect allegedly pulled out a knife and tried to stab him. While the resident was able to dodge the attack, deputies say the suspect then drove at him – running him over. The resident suffered significant injuries, deputies say, but he is expected to survive. A different witness later helped deputies track down the suspect. He was soon pulled over along Bell Road and arrested. Deputies say the suspect has been identified as 51-year-old Mount Shasta resident Christopher Blair. He has been booked into jail and is facing charges of attempted murder and burglary. (at Auburn, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSaB1frBOMn/?utm_medium=tumblr

The woman who drowned last weekend in Folsom Lake was identified as a Sacramento City College professor. Tanya Rodriguez, 49, of Sacramento, was at the lake with her 6-year-old nephew when she went into the lake and never resurfaced. Passerbys helped the boy to the park rangers’ station. Rangers eventually located Rodriguez’s body with the help of a California Highway Patrol helicopter. Rodriguez taught philosophy at Sacramento City College. Her family says she was an avid swimmer and mountain climber. Her grieving mother says she also loved people. “It was her goal to have an open heart, and to see everyone with love,” Rodriguez’s mother said. Rodriguez started teaching at SCC six years ago after stops in Minnesota and New York. She was known to her students as “Dr. T.” Online student reviews describe her as funny, creative and interesting. (at Folsom Lake) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSWCQgtH9vy/?utm_medium=tumblr
