What is Homestuck? This sounds like fun, but I have no idea what it is.
Oh gosh, so rarely do we get this opportunity, we best not spoil it.
Homestuck is a multimedia webcomic written by Andrew Hussie. It is over 6000 pages long and utilizes text, images, videos, music, and interactive games to tell a story.
There’s an amazing level of interaction between the fans of Homestuck and what happens in the story. Initially, the story was told through the use of reader prompts (readers would send in commands for the characters, and Andrew Hussie would draw panels in response to the commands). Now the comic draws from the fanbase in a more abstract way, often including fandom jokes and theories (though whether the theories are accurately predicting where Homestuck will go or causing Homestuck to go in that route is up for debate).
Homestuck had a huge fanbase. in the millions, I believe. A huge, disproportionately visible fanbase. The potential cosplays range from incredibly simplistic affairs that you could pull out of your closet, to some of the most complex prop, costume, and wig construction out there. If you’ve ever seen someone with grey skin at a convention, you’ve probably seen a Homestuck.
Finally, the story. Homestuck is a story about four internet friends who play a computer game together. It turns out that the game can affect their real world environment, and all four kids are eventually transported to the Medium, becoming fully immersed in the game. They interact with a lot of people throughout the story, including other groups of people playing different version of the same game. Their ultimate goal is to win the game, and hopefully survive the journey.
NOW ON TO WHAT THIS HAS TO DO WITH PROM.
A while ago, a group of tumblr users came out with a Homestuck fancomic called Promstuck, which popularized the idea of Homestuck characters in prom settings (and prom costume designs for characters). Somewhere along the way, people started having Homestuck-themed proms in real life, and, well, we jumped on board.
In our case, we're a Promstuck AND a Can Town event. This means that we'll be collecting canned food donations at our event, which we'll be donating to the Sacramento Food Bank afterward.
