Hello! Name’s Joan-Anthony / Emil. Raised Episcopal/Catholic, left the church, came back, now trying to figure myself out. This is a place to explore my feelings I guess. I feel a lot of things about God. Hell isn’t a fire and brimstone eternity of torment, shame and mortification are never a requirement, and we are called to be revolutionary in our love, not damn others. There will be no ‘no true scottsman’ here. Christianity hurts, Christianity kills, and if you were hurt by the church you have every right to be angry and move away from it.

you think that you're so alone in the world then you read literature from hundreds of years ago and you realize that other people have always felt this way

Church really hit me today. Idk, maybe me openly acknowledging how pitiful and brittle my faith has become helped me be more frank and open with God about it during the service. Matthew 14:22-33 was the gospel today too (walking on water) and I felt like I took something genuinely touching from it for the first time. It’s always been a ‘Sunday school VBS’ story since I’m a cradle Christian, but I feel like today…. Idk, it was like i was looking at it with fresh eyes for the first time. Hhn.

A Prayer to Saint Lawrence for Joy Amidst Suffering

Saint Lawrence, martyr of Rome, lover of the poor, patron of butchers and fires, you are known for your great courage before the judges of Rome when you proclaimed that the poor and widowed were the church’s greatest treasure. You were dragged before the fire and placed on the flames, bound tight and slowly roasted. How great your agony must have been, second only to your love for the hated and unwanted of Rome! Yet, despite the slow, agonizing flames, you praised God with a smile upon your blistering face.

"Now you may turn me over, my body is roasted enough on this side." You said to your torturers as you died, "At last I am finished; you may now take from me and eat." Even in the face of great horror, you used the love of God to keep your wit and humor with you. You grinned amidst the flames, joked and laughed as the air filled with the smell of your roasting flesh. Truly, if there is any representation of joy in the midst of suffering, it is you, Saint Lawrence! Let us now look to you and take inspiration in both your charity and your bravery through suffering. Pray for us, Lawrence, that we might also face pain and tragedy with such bold gladness, and carry our crosses with a joyful laugh. Pray that we not fall into despair, but be lifted upon the shoulders of the loving, living God.
