Given an unnecessary amount of leaflets and then sent outside. Cold nipped at his face, but he dare not complain. /She/ wasn’t there, but he always felt her eyes on him when passing out the fliers.
Footsteps approached. Credence’s eyes left his feet to look at the being that approached. Chastity. He glanced back at the ground. Though she was one of the closest people to him he rarely talked to her. She was /her/ favorite. Words didn’t come to him as she stopped in front of him.
chastity sighed upon looking at credence. She had no more pamphlets left, having handed them all out hours ago.
“What exactly have you been doing? You know ma wants all of those gone.” Then, after a small moment of silence: “do you want me to help you?”
she figured mary lou wouldn’t like it, would say something about how everyone should carry their own weight, but it wasn’t as if she had anything else to do.
“I don’t need help…” his voice hallow as always. He needed help more than anything. It was no wonder he still had so many, he was horrible at passing them out. When he wasn’t being watched by her it was as if he didn’t want people to take them.
His hands shook. He wanted to ask her what she thought. He wanted to ask her if it was sinful to not want to do this. He couldn’t do that.
“Well, fine. It’s your funeral.” Chastity’s response was quiet and harsh, and she turned away in the direction of the church.
She didn’t take more than a step before realizing that no matter how incompetent she found her brother sometimes, she did pity him. It was so cold in New York.
Chastity walked back to credence, holding her hand out and looking up at him.
“Why do you have such a problem accepting help? if I take just a few pamphlets, I swear ma won’t mind.” To remind him that she wasn’t typically so kind, she added “it will be plenty more efficient anyway.”
Credence looked to her palm. Without even touching he could tell how much softer her hands were compared to his. He then looked to her face. “She will mind.” As simple as that. “She likes you. She wouldn’t mind anything you do.” Envy is a sin dear boy. “I’m sorry…” He took a step away from Chastity.
Tempted to correct him with a stern ‘she would mind some of the things I do, if she knew I did them’ but instead just nodded. She wasn’t going to push the matter, if credence didn’t want help then she was not going to give it.
“Alright. Fine. No need to apologize.”
Credence sneezed from the cold. Their mother didn’t give him warmer clothes. No knit hat, no scarf.
“Just…tell her I’m still working on these….” He knew it wouldn’t matter. A harsh beating for taking too long would come to him.
“I will.” She said, but did not go quite yet. Instead she turned, so that she was standing beside credence, allowing any strangers to still engage in conversation.
Chastity had a question, one that she been thinking of for a while. She knew what she would answer, if asked it, but for Credence it was hard to figure out. After a while, watching as her brother sneezed and shivered from the cold, she asked:
“Why do you stay? Here, I mean. At the church. With ma.”
The question stuck in his head. “Why…” A breath as he looked down at his feet. “I’m a beacon of sin and I need to be cleansed…” His hands were shaking, unsure if it was because the cold or because of his thoughts.
Credence swallowed and his tone of voice changed, “Where would I go? I can’t do anything. There’s no way I wouldn’t die out in this cold…all alone…”
Chastity frowned almost imperceptibly, and reached out to place her hand on Credence’s shoulder, trying to call upon her basic social skills as to what a reassuring gesture would be.
Although they were not related by blood, chastity did actually care for her siblings, or at least cared as much as she was capable of.
“I would not go so far as to call yourself a beacon of sin, though we all commit sinful acts sometime. I think…” she lowered her voice, always conscious about who was listening, “I think sometimes ma takes her teachings too far, and it is a shame that you bear the brunt of it. And you are correct you haven’t really any place to go,” chastity paused, attempting to navigate her speech. kindness did not come easy.
“and besides, you would not be entirely alone, if ever you tried to leave. modesty and I would help you,”
“…without me here she’ll hurt Modesty.” His stomach fell. She knew how much he cared about Modesty.
Credence looked down at his fliers. It hurt. Mother had him in such a tight hold. She made him believe her cruel words. She made him hate himself. “And you don’t know me. I’m horrible. I’m a sinner and I’m going to burn…”
She nodded. Chastity thinks it’s strange to have such a tragic little brother, but understands that it’s completely out of her control.
“Well, we all believe ourselves to be sinners at one point or another.” She shivered then, reminded of the freezing cold. “I’m going back inside. Try and give those away quick as you can.”
Then she took a pamphlet from him, folding it and tucking it into her sleeve. Ma did not need to know.
Looking to her brother, she saw him cough. It looked like he was in pain and suffering. The very image of her older brother hurt sent a chill down to her spine, more than the fear of being terrified of what he could do.
This caused Modesty’s courage to peek out as she ran over to Credence finally and took him into a sobbing hug. “Credence!” She cared far too much for her brother more than she feared him.
“Please…don’t die on me brother. You’re all I have left!” She sobbed, looking at him. “What can I do to help you?”
"D-don't worry..." He held to her. "I just...I'm fine..." More wisps came and his hands went to her cheeks. "Look at me...I'm here..."
He let go and looks down to his legs. Another cough. "Don't be afraid...I'm still here..." Her brother became darkness. Small wisps. Too weak to be much more.

Modesty was still hiding safely away in her old childhood home. Memories of her time with her biological mother, father and nine siblings helped comfort her a little, but the young girl knew they were nothing more than memories now.
The reality before her was her adoptive older brother she had grown so close to and cared for had transformed into something indescribable and happened to kill their Ma and Chastity right before her eyes.
She was terrified of him and what he was capable. Modesty couldn’t believe that Credence, the nice, yet quiet person that he was could be…this scary. Modesty sat there and cried for the loss of her family who were just memories and Credence, the brother who had now become something else. She was all alone.
Hurt was the only word that came to mind. A tiny wisp of darkness. A small force keeping Credence alive. He’d spend a few days at home. It was no longer a home.
The wisp stayed low to the ground as it went through the city. Any who were close could feel a pain, a pleading cry for help. Though the ground and buildings were fixed Credence knew what he did. He’d burn in hell for his sins. A need to fix things that couldn’t be fixed.
Modesty. Where was she? All alone. So young. She can handle herself. That doesn’t matter. You promised you’d always be there for her. Right. The aura travelled to her old home. A small hope that she was there.
The wisp found its way inside the cracks of the building and then formed into Credence’s body. Deep staggered breathes. Hurt. His clothes ripped and body torn in places. Nothing too visible other than twitches. He’d be fine. This wasn’t about him. He’d keep his body and he’d find his sister. She was what mattered.
Hearing a noise before her, Modesty looked up and saw Credence who looked hurt and his clothes were torn. She jolted up at this, both surprise and fear racing through her.
She wanted nothing more than to go over and hug him and help comfort her dear brother she was protective over. But…she was afraid. What if he attacked her? Most importantly, what if he came back to do exactly that?
This caused Modesty to start backing away slowly, small whimpers and sobs from her lips. “C-Credence…please…don’t hurt me. Don’t hurt me!”
Credence’s heart fell hard. A limped step backwards. “I’d never…” He was the reason that she was all alone. She’s scared of you because you’re a monster. You’re what you said you’d protect her from.
A few twitches. Staying as a human proved itself difficult with how much damage was caused. He’d fight the need to become the dark aura.
Another step back. His statement meant nothing. Before he thought that he’d never kill someone and that changed too fast. He didn’t know what more to say.
Modesty was alert and watched him carefully, looking to the door every now and then. She could sprint to that door and make it out,she knew it. Why wasn’t she? Was it because she was scared of her brother? The young girl knew she could be brave at times like when she admitted the toy wand was hers and was going to take the beating this time.
She couldn’t let Credence get punished for something that wasn’t his fault. Wait…this was all her fault. If she hadn’t hidden that wand under her bed and Credence didn’t find it, then causing Ma to become a part of it, this probably wouldn’t have happened. She would still have her brother…yet they would still be trapped with Ma and her ways.
This caused Modesty to fall to the ground, wiping away her tears as she sobbed loudly. “I’m sorry brother. I-I should have known better than to hide that wand under my bed, then this wouldn’t have happened! I didn’t mean to anger you…”
Credence became black smoke for a second and then was human again, kneeling to Modesty. "I-I'm not angry at you..."
He wanted to bring her close. He wanted to hold her. Comfort her. Keep her safe. He wouldn't dare lay a finger on her without that being what she wanted.
A cough. Wisps came off of him. Staying a human was proving itself difficult. His face pale and his breath scattered.

“Credence…” Jerri’s voice has a SING-SONG quality to it, head turning so as to look over her shoulder at the boy she’s TAKEN IN. The boy that she has every intention of TURNING. Now will not be that time, though… She wants to WAIT a little while. Gain his trust first. Play on that scent of LONGING and, if she sniffs really hard, LUSTING that is wafting from him. He is - what is the phrase that kids use nowadays? - CARRYING A TORCH for her. She moves SLOWLY, not wanting to SPOOK him, turning fully around and walking forward to where he is seated on her couch. She sits SOFTLY next to him, one hand resting on her own thigh, fingers DANGEROUSLY CLOSE to touching his own. The other finds its way to the back of his neck, gently cupping it with a BARELY THERE TOUCH, “Is there something you wish to tell me?”
A small shift in his breath. He moved slightly to let her hand hold his neck. Credence found himself to be needy for such touch. Even thinking back he could not remember when someone older than him showed him such kindness. His eyes shifted to her eyes. It drove him mad how beautiful she was. A perfect being. An angel.
