Announcing the Best Beatles Cover Song Tournament!

Okay, so the next tournament poll ended in a tie. I am making the executive decision to run the Best Cover BY The Beatles tournament first. This will be immediately followed by the Worst Cover by The Beatles. This is so I can more fairly seed the Best Album tournament. If you want to know more about the seeding process, please feel free to ask.

The following caveats and rules apply. They're mostly the same as before, but a refresher for the new followers:

These are ONLY cover songs released by The Beatles on their "main catalogue," meaning songs released while the Beatles were an active band. This means that bonus tracks, lost tracks, unreleased songs, or songs released after the band broke up are not included. This was to make sure the bracket could be finished in a reasonable amount of time. A bracket for unreleased or bonus tracks may be considered in the future.

There will be a seeding round for this tournament, where the version recorded by The Beatles will be pitted against the original version of the song.

There are 25 covers in the catalogue; to get a bracket-friendly even number, "Maggie Mae" will not be included. This is because a) the Beatles only released part of the song and b) it's a traditional number so there's not "original" to seed it against.

Propaganda is encouraged for this tournament, but please be polite and don't attack other voters. Please limit your propaganda to discussing the merits/shortcomings of the songs as-is.

Anyone being nasty about anyone involved in the Beatles' story in the notes (including band and non-band members) will be blocked on sight. This includes placing blame for the band's breakup on any one person.

The tournament will begin on Monday, July 27!

Little Child is a complete song. It's pretty basic and easily the worst track on With the Beatles, but at least it's a real song.

In an earlier round, I wrote that Revolution 9 was the result of John and Yoko deciding to release whatever they burped* up in the studio. I don't have any trouble deciding that it is the worst.

revolution 9 has an actual story if you listen hard enough and if you’re a little crazy. I think personally it’s about a world (or perhaps country) that’s enveloped in revolution after revolution. the society is cannibalising itself. It leaves the listener disoriented, without strict cause in their life. daily operations move on with a kind of disconnected reverie, without a solid, continuous government in a society that presently needs one. It’s a continued criticism of the calls for violent revolution seen in revolution/revolution 1, hence the title.
