Given an unnecessary amount of leaflets and then sent outside. Cold nipped at his face, but he dare not complain. /She/ wasnāt there, but he always felt her eyes on him when passing out the fliers.
Footsteps approached. Credenceās eyes left his feet to look at the being that approached. Chastity. He glanced back at the ground. Though she was one of the closest people to him he rarely talked to her. She was /her/ favorite. Words didnāt come to him as she stopped in front of him.
chastity sighed upon looking at credence. She had no more pamphlets left, having handed them all out hours ago.
āWhat exactly have you been doing? You know ma wants all of those gone.ā Then, after a small moment of silence: ādo you want me to help you?ā
she figured mary lou wouldnāt like it, would say something about how everyone should carry their own weight, but it wasnāt as if she had anything else to do.
āI donāt need helpā¦ā his voice hallow as always. He needed help more than anything. It was no wonder he still had so many, he was horrible at passing them out. When he wasnāt being watched by her it was as if he didnāt want people to take them.
His hands shook. He wanted to ask her what she thought. He wanted to ask her if it was sinful to not want to do this. He couldnāt do that.
āWell, fine. Itās your funeral.ā Chastityās response was quiet and harsh, and she turned away in the direction of the church.
She didnāt take more than a step before realizing that no matter how incompetent she found her brother sometimes, she did pity him. It was so cold in New York.
Chastity walked back to credence, holding her hand out and looking up at him.
āWhy do you have such a problem accepting help? if I take just a few pamphlets, I swear ma wonāt mind.ā To remind him that she wasnāt typically so kind, she added āit will be plenty more efficient anyway.ā
Credence looked to her palm. Without even touching he could tell how much softer her hands were compared to his. He then looked to her face. āShe will mind.ā As simple as that. āShe likes you. She wouldnāt mind anything you do.ā Envy is a sin dear boy. āIām sorryā¦ā He took a step away from Chastity.
Tempted to correct him with a stern āshe would mind some of the things I do, if she knew I did themā but instead just nodded. She wasnāt going to push the matter, if credence didnāt want help then she was not going to give it.
āAlright. Fine. No need to apologize.ā
Credence sneezed from the cold. Their mother didnāt give him warmer clothes. No knit hat, no scarf.
āJustā¦tell her Iām still working on theseā¦.ā He knew it wouldnāt matter. A harsh beating for taking too long would come to him.
āI will.ā She said, but did not go quite yet. Instead she turned, so that she was standing beside credence, allowing any strangers to still engage in conversation.
Chastity had a question, one that she been thinking of for a while. She knew what she would answer, if asked it, but for Credence it was hard to figure out. After a while, watching as her brother sneezed and shivered from the cold, she asked:
āWhy do you stay? Here, I mean. At the church. With ma.ā
The question stuck in his head. āWhyā¦ā A breath as he looked down at his feet. āIām a beacon of sin and I need to be cleansedā¦ā His hands were shaking, unsure if it was because the cold or because of his thoughts.
Credence swallowed and his tone of voice changed, āWhere would I go? I canāt do anything. Thereās no way I wouldnāt die out in this coldā¦all aloneā¦ā
Chastity frowned almost imperceptibly, and reached out to place her hand on Credenceās shoulder, trying to call upon her basic social skills as to what a reassuring gesture would be.
Although they were not related by blood, chastity did actually care for her siblings, or at least cared as much as she was capable of.
āI would not go so far as to call yourself a beacon of sin, though we all commit sinful acts sometime. I thinkā¦ā she lowered her voice, always conscious about who was listening, āI think sometimes ma takes her teachings too far, and it is a shame that you bear the brunt of it. And you are correct you havenāt really any place to go,ā chastity paused, attempting to navigate her speech. kindness did not come easy.
āand besides, you would not be entirely alone, if ever you tried to leave. modesty and I would help you,ā
āā¦without me here sheāll hurt Modesty.ā His stomach fell. She knew how much he cared about Modesty.
Credence looked down at his fliers. It hurt. Mother had him in such a tight hold. She made him believe her cruel words. She made him hate himself. āAnd you donāt know me. Iām horrible. Iām a sinner and Iām going to burnā¦ā
She nodded. Chastity thinks it's strange to have such a tragic little brother, but understands that it's completely out of her control.
"Well, we all believe ourselves to be sinners at one point or another." She shivered then, reminded of the freezing cold. "I'm going back inside. Try and give those away quick as you can."
Then she took a pamphlet from him, folding it and tucking it into her sleeve. Ma did not need to know.

ā- My muses reaction to finding your muses diary with fantasies your muse has written about mineLucy blushed deeply as she read the words written in the small diary. She felt a bit bad, knowing this was most definitely something quite private. But she was just so curious⦠she had no idea that Chastity felt this way about her.
Chastity opened the creaking door, stopping dead in her tracks. She had known it was idiotic to write whatever came into her mind, but sometimes she could not help herself. Heavily tempted to grab the book out of Lucyās hand in an embarrassed and mortified rage, she instead remained where she stood, deciding to announce her presence with a quiet, snarky question:
āI will admit my spelling isnāt very good, I havenāt had much schooling. But, an enjoyable read all the same?ā
āAh!ā Lucy blushed, spinning around and setting the book down quickly, āI-Iām so so sorry I-I came in here to help clean and it w-was open and I saw my name a-and I got curious and I was just gonna read the one sentence b-but⦠then I read moreā¦ā she hung her head, ashamed, āI-Iām so so so sorry Chastity⦠I know I shouldnāt have read any of it at all⦠p-please donāt hate meā¦ā
Taking a small step forward, chastity tried her hardest to give an unconcerned smile. She didnāt have many friends, many people in general, so she was not going to be too harsh. Especially since she felt like the one in the wrong, writing all sorts of sinful things in her diary.Ā
āIt is alright. I think if I were you, I would have done the same. I should be the one apologizing, really. I am sorry I wrote those things about you. or that sometimes I think those things about you, or...ā Chastity trailed off, deciding to wait out the other womanās response.Ā

Ā Ā underneath the fabric, her knuckles were white, turning blue from the cold. she was only a few blocks away from the church, so so close.Ā
Ā she was only out here because she had spoken back to mary lou. trying to fight ma was ridiculous, really, something her little brother would try before getting whipped. chastity was not ridiculous. she always did as she was told to the best of her ability. but tonight, things had gone too far. so now she was out in the freezing snow, for possibly the entire night.Ā
Ā strangers passed by, trying to get to their warm homes, probably. chastity attempted to get their attention, smile plastered almost painfully onto her small, taut face.Ā
Ā sometimes, she pretended she was an actress in the moving pictures. lies dripping from her lips like honey. tonight she followed the script like religion, mimicking her mother, as always.Ā
Ā chastity shoved the pamphlets forward, internally thanking god for the gloves that covered her pulsating wounds. she raised her voice ever so slightly, in the same way she had seen ma do everyday.Ā
Ā "There are witches among us! These strange happenings have only one explanation, would you like a leaflet?ā
āperhaps she is cold blooded and cruel, or, perhaps she is just scared.ā
