Fallen Hero, my own Sidestep Irina, Herald. Trigger warnings for character death and gore and everything that comes with those, I guess.

---------------------------------- This wasn’t how it was supposed to feel like.

You tell to yourself as you watch the once familiar face in front of you, beaten to a pulp. A once perfectly symmetrical face his own mother wouldn’t recognize.

A body hanging on a rebar you threw it against. Right through the chest. Golden hair dirtied in blood and dirt. Bright blue eyes dimmed lifeless, only one of them looking at you for an answer. Why?

He looks like an abandoned doll someone threw out of the window. A toy so beautiful the other kids wanted to get rid of it. Cut it’s hair, mark it’s face, tore the limbs off and scatter the remains for the owner to pick up.

”You’re not a bad person, Irina.”

A choked sob you don’t recognize as your own hurts your tightly closed throat, your legs giving out. Your armor not granting the sweet scratching of your knees hitting the ground.

You gasp for air but your lungs are filled with water, stomach burning, your head blank. Nothing but darkness. Desperately searching for the mind of hope and unapologetic joy you once thought too good to be true, too pure.

A mind you once wanted to protect.

On a sunny Tuesday afternoon, the late sunlight glowing in your hair

When we lay together on the fresh spring grass

In a letter

A whisper in the ear

Loud, so everyone can hear

Over and over again, till it’s nothing but a senseless babble

When the broken grass litters the floor

From very far away

With no space left between us

As we huddle together, the storm raging outside

Over your shoulder

Muffled, from the other side of the door

Through a song

Without really meaning it

In a blissful sigh as you fall asleep

Broken, as you clutch the sleeve of my jacket and beg me not to leave

A taunt, with one eyebrow raised and a grin bubbling at your lips

When I am dead

Slowly, the words dripping from your tongue like honey

Too quick, mumbled into your scarf

In awe, the first time you realised it

In a way I can’t return

We were talking about Moomins with the Soft Squad and someone asked what our Sidesteps would be as Moomins.

Of course I had to draw them.
