   THE  AIR  WAS  TENSE  AND  HEAVY WITH  POSSIBILITY  as  the  money was  split  in  three  by  the  blond  man’s   rugged  hands.    occasionally ,  tuco  and  angel  eyes  shared  a  glance  –    angel ‘s  face  stony  and  unmoving ,    tuco  glancing  away  quickly ,  remembering all too well  the  beating  he’d  suffered  a day ago.     as  he  watched  coins  clatter  into  place ,   felt  sweat  trickle  down his  neck,   listened  to   no - name’s  quiet  counting  ,   he  couldn’t help  but  wonder  what  life was going  to  be  like from  now on.   his  whole future seemed like  a whole  stretch  of  unknown  blackness in front of him ;   which was  nothing  new.   angel eyes had  woken up  this  morning  thinking  he’d  either  have  his  way  with  the  gold,     or  die    –    he  wasn’t  unhappy  with this  outcome  in  particular.     all  guns  had been  discarded  ,   all bullets taken out and glistening  in the  sun.

  naturally ,  tuco  split  moments  after  the  counting  was  finished,  all vengeance  on  ‘ blondie ‘  forgotten  now  that he was  considerably  richer than he  had  been.   no  amount of  money’s  worth  your  neck,  i’ve  realized!   he exclaimed ,   voice jolly  as  he slapped  no - name jovially on the back.    that’s how  gamblers  get  it.      soon  after ,  it  was  just  angel  eyes  and  no - name standing  alone  in  the circle of  sad  hill.   the  man dressed in  black and the man dressed  in  white.   the  bad  and  the  good.   at  first,   their  eye contact  was  tense   …   but then  angel  broke  it ,   retrieving  his  pipe  from his  inner  coat. 

  “  so.   “   he  said,  packing  it  with his  thumb ,  his  shoulders  feeling  strangely  lighter  than  they  had  in  previous  days.    “   what  now?  “

        THE DYING cheroot had a last flue of smoke before he pinched it between his fingers    &&    plucked the cigarillo from his mouth .      he examined the brownwither tobacco wrapping then flicked it onto the dry sediment .      ashes collecting with dirt between sandstone striae ,    the skin forgotten ,    the flowering business of where they stood a growing wealth of unknown gravemarks in the years to come set there as if happenstantially by the recession of floodwaters    &&    lo dark tuffs squat in the far serrado careening    &&    belching their barrel backs guffawed    &&    their piebald heads elongating with ruddy unskinned faces wouldn’t know starvation for another year if men paid his due in sulfur    &&    gunsmoke .      he scratched his chin ,    soured by the pungently foul deposit in his mouth .      dry    &&    sore again .     a film of papillae troweled off his tongue  &  clung to a cracked  &  cankered upper palate .       ❝     i’m retiring .     ❞

       he’d strung his worth of the gold along his horses back .     an impetigo roiled beneath the cotton hem of his sleeve abraded by the andalusian’s thornlike coat .       a minor irritation of the skin .      rags of gold from the puddling sun at the western hemisphere sheet across the hills dabbed in dry mesquites    &&    cascade across the banters of rotting woods ,    pooling at the wells of carved names    &&    banding around the welts of his shoes like a fetter of insatiable avarice    &&    concoct an astringent humor to circumvent the creosote guttering his lungs .      in the evening light the brass of bullets looked convincingly of coats of oroide .      the transient equipoise chilled the hair at his nape ,    the silence of canyons devout to an odd stillness .      tuco’d been smart to run when he did .      in doing so he had drawn the rope to be their undoing .     risk of a turned back .     the guns would not remain untouched ,    unloaded ,    left lying to weather    &&    rust .      he did not have faith or hope yet that angel eyes wouldn’t try    &&    shoot him in the back    &&    he meditated on the idea himself .       ❝      think you could still have a long life ahead of you if you do the same ,  sergeant .      ❞
