Problem with modern media is it feels like there’s never enough of The Thing I Want. As a kid it felt like there was always enough, but now it’s never enough. The argument of “8-9 45 minute episodes” doesn’t account for the fact that the way these episodes are scripted and shot are still paring down the script to the absolute bare minimum for a story to make cohesive sense. Every character action, every scene, exists to propel the plot or explain something. There are no “filler” scenes anymore, scarcely any interactions that exist solely to allow characters to exist as they are in their own time without pressure or looming threat or a plot or a plan or advancing the story. Everything is expedient. Everything has a “purpose”. Not a single word is wasted.

I don’t know, call me a maximalist time waster. A story shouldn’t solely consist of purposes or points. Sometimes things should just happen, time should be wasted. I would rather there be so much that fans will go on to cut it down than to have so little that every second is gold to be coveted for that one scrap of serotonin.

I want more Naruto filler episodes in TV shows, is what I’m saying. I want them to be available. I want to enjoy these characters a little bit more.

I also understand that I am viewing media from the perspective of a full time “fan” and that non-fandom people will see me as odd. I get it, but the thing is that fandom arose organically around titles and IPs that simply existed as they were, chock full of stuff for said fans to salivate over and dissect and play around with. The only thing that’s fundamentally changed, I think, is that we’re getting supposedly higher quality but less of it. I’d rather more than less, tbh. Am I insane or just an adult with an adult’s hunger.

I get it, but media like animation is just not made or managed the same way anymore. Animators have much more of a time crunch due to money loss pressures now than ever before… simply put, animation just cannot waste its time because it’s seen as a massive money making project first and then an audience driven product second.
