I do not want to sleep in my bed.
I want to be back in Panama and sleep on the wood floor of the cabana, open to the cool wind and the mist of the ever-present rain and the whispers of the locals and the sniffing of the dogs and the clouds of mosquitoes. I want to wake up at 5:30am and do yoga outside in the rain and race through JB’s regimen of sit-ups and push-ups to be first in line for the oatmeal and chunks of pineapple prepared by Emma. I want to scarf it down as quick as possible to be one of the first to use the one bucket of water with bleach to wash my dishes so that I can get them as clean as possible, and so that I can have as much time to journal as possible. I want to still be groggy and tired as I suit up in scuba gear to head out to a dive. I want to come back to the island energized and hungry for lunch and be excited for the pan del coco that’s fresh and warm and made in the hut 200 feet away from our campsite. I want to spend my afternoon laying out in the sun studying scuba certification things and wakeboarding techniques and then get covered in blue and yellow while repainting a school. I want to have to hike a quarter mile in order to fill a 10 gallon bucket with rainwater if I’m thirsty or if I want to “shower” or wash my hair. I want to scramble at the last minute and talk with Chago and Antonio and Carlos to pull together a Spanish lesson that will benefit beginners and advanced speakers, and end up discussing the differences in jellyfish and dolphins and birds. I want to eat yet another helping of rice and beans by light of headlamps for dinner and trade half of my pineapple for someone else’s ration of hot chocolate. I want to go to fill up my Nalgene for the night only to find that we’re out of water again, and have to hike another quarter mile in the dark to fill up the buckets again. I want to come back to small groups’ Gathering of the Moon, and to take about highs and lows of the day in Spanish. I want to sit out in the moonlight next to Antonio and learn how to make bracelets and talk with him about the stars and his two kids. I want to listen to the waves against the rocks and the wind in the palms. I want to talk for hours about struggles and relationships and learning and life. I want to get settled into my spot of the hut as most people retreat into closed-up tents. And I want to sleep there, on the hardwood floor of the cabana, open to the cool wind and the mist of the ever-present rain and the whispers of the locals and the sniffing of the dogs and the clouds of mosquitoes.
