Festival: Brief

For my festival I'm going to do a halal food and drink festival to dedicate to all and other people that can enjoy halal food to explore the culinary dishes.

Final design

Here are my final designs for my campaign on Domestic violence. However, I’ve decided to swap the colours of the background and the hand as both colours fit well. The colours that I’ve chosen are purple in two different shades, red and black as they demonstrate attention that is bold and powerful. I’ve decided to use the hand to show awareness that it’s not ok to be violent towards women in abusive relationships. It also means stopping domestic violence and showing awareness as women don’t have as much freedom as men. However, women in same-sex relationships can experience domestic violence which concludes the idea that both genders can be abusive towards their partner. Furthermore, I’ve used shapes to place the typography in different sections as I separate the word ‘freed’ and ‘dom’ to make sure that it is clear. Thus, I’ve decided to use a combination of 3D, graffiti and typeset in my campaign to create a love heart to show support for survivors who experience domestic violence.

Development 3

For my final development, I've decided to pick and choose my initial ideas from development 1 and 2 and combine them together. One thing I didn't like about my ideas was that I focused on the detail of the eye instead of the typography as I focused on the text's font, colour, size and pathway. One thing I like about my work is how I focused on kerning, leading, tracking, sound, graffiti, 3D typography and pathways in my work. My favourite idea is the mask as I decided to demonstrate how covid has affected women being abused as domestic violence cases have risen during the pandemic.

London Trip- Galleries

As someone who enjoys going to galleries, I took photos of paintings that represent religion, music, still life and various topics. My favourite portrait would be the flowers as they look bright and colourful with an oppressive background. However, these paintings have a true story behind every single one.

London Trip

I went on a trip to London to explore places such as Buckingham Palace, statues and other places that I found beautiful. However, this reminds me of visiting London a few years back. I've also spotted some billboards that include images and typography as there are many advertisements.

Development 2

As I build up my ideas I explore creating my own typography by turning them into shapes, using 2 different fonts that are different and using symbols such as the purple ribbon, as it is attached to the word 'freedom. Also, I explore my own typography in various pathways which include 3D and space and shapes. However, I think my design ideas are getting better as I'm combining my 1st development of ideas and typesets to help me create more ideas. On the other hand, I've decided to look at the purple ribbon which honour domestic violence members and decided to create my own to show meaning to my campaign.

Development 1

I made a few ideas on Adobe illustrator as I experimented with texture, 3D space, shapes, letterforms, texture, pathways and various type sets that would be suitable for my campaign. What I found interesting from this experimentation was that I watched a tutorial to help me build various ways of creating typography. However, I don’t think the love heart would be suitable as the words are overlapped are and difficult to read. On the other hand, I’ve used shapes such as squares to create typographypahy which is suitable.

Riso Print

The task was to cut, create and form a collage of images and words/letters. This task was fun to do as you explored various colour and typography, especially letterforms as you could create your word. Thus, we placed our work on the Riso printer as the image and letters are separate on one piece of paper and the other layered on top of each other. Overall, I've learned how to create words and use punctuation to create sound and dialect, which relates to one of my tasks.

Anna Goodson's coaster campaign for 2020 highlights women's rights through art | Creative Boom

This campaign shows women's rights through art as Anna Goodson shows the importance of women's issues and the right to choose what to do with their bodies. This social campaign is interesting as this shows the problems that women face, and designers are coming together to support the #ourBodiesOurChoices campaign. Thus, the campaign is designed to draw attention to important and social issues through the power of art.

Here's a gift animation that I created in adobe after effects. I looked at tutorials on how to create kinetic typography as I looked at a technique called scrolling. I used various colours such as red, purple and green to make the word stand out and used a black background to make it look colourful. Exploring Adobe after effects was useful as I was able to animate typography with effects.

Here is another stop motion that I created in Alight motion. To create this stop motion I used the offset animation and used my keyframe to drag the words up. However, this animation looks like it was from a credit scene in the movie as I'm trying to use Saul's ideas of filmmaking.

I created my own stop motion on Alight Motion. To create this animation I used an effect called 'Repeat' which creates multiple letters/words. I decided to rotate the words by moving the angle and adding keyframes every time it rotates.

Saul Bass

Saul Bass is a graphic designer and filmmaker who is known for his film posters. He uses stop-motion in his work for films, especially for openings, as they include music which attracts an audience. However, he uses typography as they have some effect, or can move up, down and on the side.

Regent’s Place | DixonBaxi

A brand agency that I like is DixonBaxi as they use typography, especially letterforms to use them to create animations as this is an example of stop motion. They create their stop motion in various ways and use templates as material such as the grass and sky. I'm fascinated by their work as they use the letterform 'R' for one of their projects to represent a word.

My next task was to create a magazine cover for a new lifestyle for a new Gen Z audience. I've also included a barcode as both bars are far apart, showing that they are imitating the prison bars as this conveys freedom. I've also included the design principles such as kerning and leading as the words are spaced out and so are the lines. A masthead is included in the title of the cover and the typeface is delicate and soft as this is linked with Ally's lecture, 'type as image'. I use script as my chosen font as it is lightweight and clear to read. Thus, I've included space as I lay out my image, the barcode and typography neatly. I've learnt from this task that I can apply the principles of design and use them in my work to communicate effectively and create meaning.

Laurène Boglio is a French illustrator and award-winning Art Director. Her work on magazines is exciting as they include elements such as colour, typefaces, shape, composition, filter and lighting. For example, the magazine cover shows a picture of Daniel Craig with a black and white filter as this conveys photography and one of the key elements when making a magazine cover.
