Gluing up phase one of a future cutting board! Commissions have begun! 🌲🌳⚒
Pretty nice haul. Hard maple, walnut, sapele, ash, and some Phillipine mahogany. Ready to get started on some fun projects! 🌲🌳⚒ #wood #shoplife #lumber #hardwood #maple #sapele #mahogany #exoticwoods #ash #project #process (at Brewster, New York)
Kicking back after some woodworking commissions with a Mermaid Pilsner from @coneyislandbeer , opened (of course), with a #BottleAxe because obviously. Not a bad way to end the day, if I do say so myself. Cheers, all. 🍻🌳🌲 BottleAxe sold by @areaware
BottleAxe is live! It’s time to unleash our inner barbarians! Order yours from Areaware (@areaware ) at www.areaware.com A percentage of proceeds will go to Extra Life (www.extra-life.org), raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Update
I ordered the custom fabrics from spoonflower.com, which was super easy and not too heavy on the wallet, considering. I recommend them. They arrived yesterday...to the wrong house...which must have happened because I used PayPal, and I think my old address was used for that account. I'll have the fabrics this weekend.
Fish Bone Chair: Fully constructed minus cushion. Looking up places to get the...squishy...part of the cushion while I wait for the fabric to arrive. Scratch that...just found one that both looks promising and, more importantly, is close by.
Bugged Out Lamp: Base is complete. Waiting to construct the lampshade until I have the fabric.
Cup of Milky Way: Largely constructed. All I need to do in order to complete the actual structure of the cup is laminate the bottom to the sides. However, I can't do that until I have the image of the Milky Way applied to the interior of the bottom. I'll be doing that part either Friday or Sunday. What I can do right now is carve into the sides. I'm going to make it ergonomic, and then carve little swirly patterns into the grips, which will resemble an almost Van Gogh take on the night sky and the swirliness of the Milky Way. Also, I will be carving a representation of the Milky Way onto the bottom of the cup. And, I'm going to gold leaf the swirls and Milky Way carving before I put a finish on the cup.
Right: Process of gluing the chair together
Left: Creating the cup via drillpress
Major progress today. All the chair needs now is screws and the cushion, which I need to wait for. I also constructed the base of the lamp. No class tomorrow...the lamp and maybe even the cup will probably be done, minus the actual photographs.
New Ideas for Objects
1. A chair. The seat would feature a cushion, upon which would be the printed-fabric image of the back half of a fish. The backrest would resemble the remainder of the fish, in that it would be slatted, resembling a ribcage, and would get narrower towards the top, like a fish head.
2. A lamp. The lampshade would be made out of printed-fabric, featuring butterflies and moths that had become "attracted" to the light.
3. A cup. The bottom of the cup would feature an image of the milky way, taken from the Picturing Science exhibit at AMNH. It would represent holding the entire galaxy in your hands.
Photography meets Product Design
So the assignment is to go to the American Museum of Natural History, take photos, and then somehow combine them with my major (Product Design) in order to create three objects.
My current ideas for the three products are:
- Custom origami paper patterns. For example, a set of origami elephants with photos of the elephants from the African Mammals exhibit.
- A lampshade that has attracted butterflies and/or moths. This would be a printed fabric featuring combinations of butterflies from the current exhibit.
- A cereal bowl featuring photos of fish. It would be called (you guessed it) the "fish bowl." As for the actual creation of the bowl: due to costs, I would most likely forgo having a custom-imaged bowl created for me, as they are either very expensive or require an order of at least 250 units, which would be 249 more than I would need. My current solution to this would be printing the images on con-tact paper and sticking them to the bowl for a prototype. Another idea for dinnerware would be a plate featuring one of the fish skeletons in the middle, so that when the diner finished their food, only the bones remain.
