relistening to grad right now and it’s interesting to see the different DMing styles from Justin and Travis

In Steeplechase Justin makes a vast, larger-than-life world but nudges the PCs toward what he wants them to do while still allowing them some freedom; there’s never any confusion about what the next step forward is and the characters’ progress is tangible. This also keeps the narrative momentum going, even between episodes, and it creates a sense of urgency that I think sometimes Graduation didn’t have.

In Graduation Travis makes a fairly limited world—Wiggenstaff’s Campus—and allows the PCs to explore freely, doing as they please; he lets them come to conclusions on their own based on their choices and actions, which they can apply when necessary or narratively interesting. He’s also talented at responding to the boys’ choices; he may not plan for them to interact with a specific character in any given episode, but is able to create a relevant conversation on the fly when prompted, which I feel like Steeplechase occasionally struggles with.

They both have their strengths and weaknesses, but they work so well in their respective worlds, and make them feel rich and immersive in very different ways
