As you saw in the title, we are getting into LIP GLOSS!!! Iāve been noticing all over the beautysphere that people are switching up matte lips for glossy ones. I think itās safe to say, gloss is back!
Now the thing about beauty trends is that they help introduce you to new beauty ideas, and gives you an idea of what certain people are into. However, the most important thing to remember is, not all trends work, and even they do for some, they donāt have to be for you. trends are just a suggestion.
Now for the past year or so, liquid lipsticks have entered the beautysphere and taken a strong hold.
People were intrigued by the staying power, longevity, and so much more. However, in my personal opinion, I think weāve all gotten used to the liquid lipstick and want to go back to something we know, we love, and something that has made our lips not only moisturized and soft, but also makes them look bigger, juicier, and just over all GOALS
My lip gloss is poppinā, my lip gloss is cool because the gloss is back on trend!
Now you guys, on trend or not I am a big lover of lip gloss. Itās fool proof, and it looks good on anyone. thatās the thing with trends. they donāt tell you what you can or canāt use or wear, they give you suggestions.
But Iāve always loved gloss. Sometimes liquid lipsticks can be too drying on the lips! besides I love the look of gloss. it makes your lips look healthy and shiny, and just fabulous.
Some people donāt like gloss because itās not long lasting in most cases, and can be messier than other lip products, however you can use it in so many different ways. Gloss has different finishes from sheer, to sparkly, to metallic, to creme, to fully opaque. and they all give you great, sexy looking lips (that magically have gotten bigger somehow)
Brands have recently come out with new lip gloss collections left and right. Tarte Cosmetics is coming out with their rainforest of the sea H20 Lip Glosses available at Sephora in 14 shades. Also, Lime Crime is releasing a collection of lip glosses āWet Cherry Lip Glossesā Launching May 22nd. (photos courtesy of @trendmood1 & @tartecosmetics Instagram)
I think the makeup industry is saying what we already knew. Gloss is back, and better than ever!
Ā Here are a few tips for wearing gloss, as well as some of my absolute favorite glosses at the moment.
Here are a few of my favorite glosses to wear right now AND 7 tips for wearing and rocking lip gloss.
Tip #1- Sheer/Nude Gloss goes with EVERYTHING
If youāre like me and are always doing new things with your makeup, trying new colors, doing a thick wing, yadda yadda, you may want to keep the lips neutral, BUT still want to draw some attention to them. I stock up on Sheer & Nude glosses for this exact reason. A gloss automatically draws attention to your lips and makes it look cohesive to the rest of your face no matter what you have on the eyes and face. I like to find glosses with some shimmer to them or a hint of color so itās almost like a filter on your lips. Even if you arenāt wearing anything on your face except for brows and mascara, a nude or sheer gloss will pull the look together and make it look like you put in some extra effort on your makeup.
Tip #2- Find a gloss with a good texture.
one major key to a good gloss is texture. it canāt be too thick, OR too thin.
Lip gloss thatās too thick is not only super uncomfortable, but itās also not attractive if youāre moving your lips or talking. you donāt want to be speaking and have it look like you put syrup on your lips. blech. However, the right amount of thickness does actually help. it will last longer on your lips, and will deliver more color or gloss to your lips. so donāt shy away from all lip glosses with a thicker texture, just not the ones that feel like molasses.
Lip gloss thatās too thin may not seem as bad but it can be. when itās too thin, it feels oily, and it slips around EVERYWHERE. not only that, but it will last you like 5 minutes before it slides off or completely vanishes.
The key to good gloss texture is comfort. it should feel cushy, pillow-y, and soft. it shouldnāt feel like itās uncomfortably sitting on your lips. it should feel like itās melting into your lips. The true test is to rub your lips together. if it feels wrong, donāt even buy it.
Tip #3- Want to try out a risky color? Wear it as a sheer gloss!
I know some makeup enthusiasts feel like sheer gloss is kind of like pre-teen makeup, but it really can look fabulous, and can help you try out color without fully committing.
In high school I wasnāt afraid of bold makeup. in fact, I wish I could tell high school Sage āGIRL! METALLIC BLACK LIPSTICK IS NOT FOR SCHOOLā. The point is, I was really into lavender purple lip colors back then and wore them fearlessly. The thing was, as I got older and more knowledgeable about makeup and what works for my skin color, I learned that some lavender shades were too light for me.
So, I decided to wear light lavender purple in a sheer gloss and it let m
Ā e experiment without looking like I ate a box of lavender powdered doughnuts.
Tip #4- When wearing lip gloss as a topper, donāt go overboard.
The other great thing about gloss is using it to amp up your other lip colors! you can change the finish, the color, and the overall look. However, what I learned is to not put layers and layers of lip products on your lips. Not only will it feel super uncomfortable, but too much gloss will cause the lipstick to separate and it is not a good look!
The key is to blend out your gloss after applying it. I like to use my ring finger in the center of my lips to blend the gloss into the lip color. Also, start with a little lip gloss. start with some lip gloss in the center of your bottom lip and the center of your top lip below your cupidās bow. Then spread it out over your lips.
Tip #5 Wipe the corner of your mouth so you work it
Ā this isnāt just a line from the greatest lip gloss song of the 21st century. itās also a valuable tip for gloss lovers and wearers!
Ā Ā Ā Gloss is a relatively easy product to wear. but one major thing that can mess up your lip look, is having lip gloss sandwiched in the corner of your lips. It just looks messy, girl. So wipe the corners of your mouth so you work it! (and when you walk down the hallway they canāt say nothinā OH OH OH MY LIPS SO LUSCIOUS)
Tip #6- EXFOLIATE YO LIPS GIRL
This isnāt just a lip gloss tip, itās a lip tip overall. those little crusties on your lip will mess up all your hard work trying to look cute in your new gloss. It happens to the best of us. But you can fix it by exfoliating, and hydrating your lips beforehand. And yes, lip gloss is hydrating, but makeup isnāt going to fix your problems. it can only cover it up and sometimes it wonāt even do that. donāt rely on makeup to fix things that you can take care of yourself with a little bit of pampering and self love.
One of my favorite ways to exfoliate my lips is with sugar, oil, and some kind of flavor. you can use drink mix to change up the flavor or use essential oils or coffee. Adding cinnamon or mint to your lip scrub can actually work as a natural lip plumper. Then use a toothbrush in tiny circular motions. PLEASE donāt use too much excessive force. you donāt want to end up damaging your lips. just enough to remove dead skin and make sure to hydrate your lips afterward.
Tip #7-Donāt be afraid to wear a gloss with some color! (even if it isnāt totally sheer!)
Yes, I said it. donāt be scared of colorful gloss. yes, it requires some maintenance, but not as much as you think! The thing about colorful gloss is itās a showstopper. not only is it colorful, but itās shiny so it will immediately draw people in! Plus, it gives you an effortlessly fun and easygoing look.
Just remember to line your lips if you deal with feathering around your lips frequently, and if not, just watch for your gloss traveling. With a colorful gloss, you want a thicker formula (but not hella sticky) because it will stay onto the lips better. A good example is the NYX Intense Butter Gloss formula.
Also remember to watch for lip gloss on your teeth (however, that happens even if itās not a bold or bright color, or if itās not even a gloss)
A tip I use to make wearing bolder gloss colors easier, is gum! chewing gum will keep your teeth free from lip color because the gum provides a barrier around your teeth AND your lips are moving from the chewing. this is one of my favorite makeup tips!
But the thing to remember when trying out new lip colors is to wear what makes you feel good! confidence is truly key. anyone who has a problem with thatā¦
And now, here are some lip gloss colors and formulas I really love
#1 NYX Intense Butter Gloss shades- Peanut Brittle, Cinnamon Roll, Apple Dumpling, Chocolate Crepe
not only are the NYX Intense Butter Glosses full of shine, pigmented, comfortable to wear and smell great, but they are less than $8 each!!! if you want a nude gloss, vampy gloss, or a bright colorful gloss, you can have it all. Peanut Brittle is my go to nude that doesnāt have pink tones in it so it looks great with warmer skin tones. These are super pigmented but can be worn on top of a lipstick if you want.
#2 Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb

You probably arenāt surprised I mentioned this Fenty favorite. I gotta be honest I thought āI have nude glosses I donāt really need itā but gurrrrrl I was so wrong! I have gotten tons of compliments when I where this. It makes your lips look wet and glossy and it smells like a fruit salad. Itās a sheer warm nude with gold shimmer that isnāt too obvious, but when your lips catch the light, it makes ALL the difference. itās not sticky, or slippery, itās just awesome.
#3 DOSE Of Colors Lip Gloss in Honey Iām Home
I havenāt had this for as long as some of the other glosses iām talking about, but this shade and formula, are what Iāve been looking for. Iām always looking for nude lip colors that arenāt pinky toned. There are so many pinky nudes (and I own a lot of them and love them) and with my warmer undertone, an orange or yellow based nude really looks great. So when I saw the shade Honey Iām Home at my local Ulta, I was in love! no pink, itās just this gorgeous honey nude gloss. on me, I can wear it alone, with a liner, or on top of a deeper nude to highlight it. and the formula of the DOC glosses? OMG! They smell like cupcakes and dreams, and are so plush and non sticky. this isnāt as opaque as the NYX Intense Butter Glosses but have enough color to be worn alone, or on top of another lip color.
#4 Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Gloss shades- Amber, Tara, Parfait
Before I go into these glosses, I just want to say that the NYX Intense Butter Glosses are a very close dupe in terms of formula to these ABH glosses. But these are still a big favorite despite that because the shades are so gorgeous, and the formula is opaque yet glossy. I can wear these alone and have the opacity I need with the poppinā glossy look I want! One swipe covers my whole lip. Amber is such a gorgeous warm peachy nude. Tara looks like chocolate fudge (in the best possible way) and Parfait? is STUNNING especially in the spring/summer. itās a metallic peach/gold that always looks good, and always gets complimented.
#5 Colourpop Ultra Glossy Lip shades- My Jam, Wolfie, Cabana Boy, Cheat Code

If you saw my yearly favorites post, you know my love for Colourpop UGL. The shade My Jam is one of the most gorgeous metallic gold glosses ever. it looks hella metallic and shimmery, but not ridiculous, like you made out with a robot or something. it always looks good, even on top of other lip colors. and Cabana Boy is a rose gold version of My Jam so my love for it is just as strong. Wolfie, which is a rose color with slight gold shimmer, is so unique. on itās own it looks fabulous and on top of another lip, it gives it that extra oomph to take your lips to the next level. Cheat Code is a gorgeous metallic copper that especially in Fall brings the fire.
#6 Sephora Collection Lip Gloss shades- Sand, Nude Alert, Fresh Peach
These Sephora Collection glosses have enough stick to keep your gloss in place all day, and keep them looking perfect without feeling like your wearing syrup. at $10 each, these glosses (which come in a plethora of shades for any look you want) have been a favorite of mine for years. theyāre your classic, lip gloss is poppinā lip gloss. it even smells like beauty supply store lip gloss! The shade Sand is a sheer gold shimmer gloss that looks good at all times. When I wear this on a sunny day, itās a wrap. and fresh peach, a sheer peach/gold shimmer is such a gorgeous lip gloss that looks amazing over any peach toned lipstick. Nude Alert, which is a warm nude with gold shimmer gives any nude a gorgeous glossy finish that takes it to the next level
#7 ELF Tinted Lip Oil shades- Raspberry Truffle Kiss, Nude Kiss
I wasnāt going to include this because it technically isnāt a lip gloss, but it performs like one! These tinted lip oils from elf are a new favorite of mine, theyāre pretty sheer, but they are super moisturizing and comforting on the lips and, these give you such a great glossy finish on the lips. This product is like a lip gloss, lip balm, and and lip oil all wrapped into one. And NO this isnāt āoilyā. I was worried to wear lip oils because I didnāt want it to feel like I rubbed olive oil or grease on my lips. It feels like a lip balm and lip gloss all in one. I do usually prefer a thicker formula for lip gloss, however this does have a nice feel and if you like a lighter formula, this is great.
All right you guys, thatās it for this post! Iām definitely a huge lip gloss fan and am really excited that lip gloss is in right now. What are some of your favorite lip gloss formulas and colors? Let me know!
