it’s hard to hide your pregnancy from your coworkers who are medical professionals. they see the signs as soon as you start presenting them, and it isn’t long before you’re forced to admit that you’re growing your own bundle of joy.
everyone’s too polite to ask who the father is and you’re grateful for that, but it’s during a particularly rough shift when you have to take a moment to yourself in the bathroom that dana finds you. she leans against the wall, giving you a gentle smile.
“you okay, kid?” she asks softly and you nod, even though you’re far from it. you know she can see right through you anyway, she’s always been able to read you like a book.
you shake your head, trying to blink back your tears, “just been a shitty day and the hormones aren’t helping.”
“no one’s gonna judge you if you go upstairs and see him, honey.”
“how did you…?” you trail off at the sight of dana’s knowing smile. of course she would know, she’s the heart of this place. she sees everyone and everything.
“been wondering how you tamed the shark for a while,” she admits. “but it makes sense. you look good together.”
you give her a smile of your own, “i thought he was gonna leave me when i told him about the baby, but i should’ve known he’d be full of surprises. he was more excited than me. even insisted i move into his place. i shouldn’t have doubted him.”
dana’s smile grows, “you head over heels, kid?”
“getting there,” you respond. “i know he can be a dick…”
“eh, most ortho surgeons are. we’re used to it.”
you chuckle at your friend.
“go see him,” she encourages you. “i’ll tell everyone you got called to see admin.”
when you get upstairs, you’re relieved to find out that brendon isn’t in surgery. you run into him in the hall, and he looks at you in concern.
“everything okay?” he asks, surprised you’re here.
“yes, fine,” you reassure him. “the baby’s fine. i just… i wanted to see you. i know, it’s dumb—“
“it isn’t dumb,” he pulls you towards him and you melt into his hold. “i always have time for you, and i have a rare half hour to take lunch. come on, let’s go find something edible from the cafeteria.”
he takes your hand in his, and asks you to tell him how your day is going. the next day, the ED spreads the newfound knowledge that you’re dating brendon park.
