Offerings for the Dead
Most people are reblogging an ask I answered long ago about offerings to give to the dead. It’s long overdue, but I’ve finally typed it up into an actual cohesive post.
~ Herbs ~
Lavender, for peace in passing on
Thyme, to give peace to those who have died from violence
Apple, a common Irish symbol for the dead, which I often give to my ancestors
Pomegranates, myth of Persephone and all that
Rosemary, for remembrance
Myrrh, commonly used in necromancy, also used to give off good vibes
Chervil, often used in rituals for the dead
Mugwort, usually used to aid divination and communication with the dead. I also give it as an offering
Bay, same as mugwort (my mentality is that these herbs will help “send” the offerings to the dead)
Lemonbalm, for peace and healing
Wormwood, to strengthen the communication with the dead, as well as healing and revenge
Frankincense, a traditional herb (usually incense) to honor the dead
~ Flowers ~
Calendula, for blessings and eternal love
Rose petals (or the flower) for love and healing
Marigolds, perfect for ancestor worship (as well as spirit work salves and tea)
Lilies, for a sense of security and togetherness; ideal for children
Orchids, for balanced emotions and adoration; ideal for former lovers
Daisies, also ideal for former lovers and lost family members
Tulips, to spread happiness
Dandelions, ideal for connecting with certain spirits (especially when drunk as a tea)
~ Liquids ~
Water, a traditional offering for the dead, often left out for passing spirits
Wine or other alcohol
Juice, namely pomegranate or beet
Oils, such as olive oil, pomegranate oil, coconut, almond, vinegar
~ Other ~
Stones or crystals
Coins
Tobacco (I also know some people who use cigarette smoke or ashes)
Grains, traditionally brown bread
Meat
Candles, namely dark colored or earth-toned
Cleaning up graveyards, placing offerings on graves and speaking to them also makes a great offering
Song and music
Anything personal to the person you’re sending the offering to
~ What to do with the Offerings ~
Burn herbs or flowers (safely) with a written message to “send” the offering to the soul
Leave coins, flowers or herbs on the grave
Pour liquid into the earth, or leave them out in a bowl
Leave offerings out as a “standing offering” for the dead who pass through (idea from @arachnospooky)
This is SO overdue I’m so sorry but I hope it helps!!
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but Hestia is proud of you.
She is proud of your successes, however big or small they seem to you. She’s proud that you kept pushing through, and that you keep pushing through. She’s proud of when you said yes to something, and when you said no. Saying no is a powerful boundary.
She’s proud when you fail too. Failures can be tough, but she’s there by your side and is proud you put yourself out there enough to fail. Failures lead to different successes.
She’s proud of how you handle things, and how you learn. She’s proud of the days where you get some unpleasant, but needed, things done and she’s proud when you choose to spend the day focusing on you.
She’s proud of you for everything you do, even if you feel like you don’t deserve it. All of those things contribute to who you are, whether you are simply surviving it, embracing it, or learning from it.
HESTIA IS PROUD OF YOU.

My dearest Witch, if you have spell vessels (like wards, amulets, talismans) that are running down every 1-2 weeks and you are fully recharging them with your personal energy, and subsequently you feel exhausted and have almost no energy for anything else,
you are not weak at magic;
I will bet you that you are choosing the nuclear option of high-octane megafuel supernova magic where you pump fast-burning, high-intensity energy into vessels likely not designed for long-term energy storage.
Because repeatedly exhausting yourself is not a good way to increase your magical endurance, I think it is likely that your spellcasting strategy has locked you into a cycle of near constant high-energy output with no reserves left over to undertake techniques that actually allow you to get stronger, nor any reserves left to build long-lasting magical vessels that conserve the power you give them.
Also incidentally the techniques I have found for making spell vessels more long-lasting are twofold:
The first is that the physical spell vessel contains matter like wood, plant materia, bones, stones (including minerals and crystals), and shells; this makes a container spell with multiple of these things a very good choice.
Spell vessels with man-made materials like glass, paper, and plastic may be much more poorly at hanging on to energy, especially if these things are thin and lacking volume (like paper); these shortcomings can be circumvented by carefully creating these materials in a ritual meant to imbue them with magical purpose (such as hand-crafting your own paper out of pertinent substances).
Sigils which are not linked to a greater power hold only as much power as you can give them, and when imprinted onto nonmagical paper with nonmagical ink that power may evaporate rapidly.
Any spell vessel decorated and modified unto the purpose of the spell will be better at holding energy; paint, burn, scar, braid, dye, bead, carve, embroider, etc., the spell vessel (including decorating the container which holds things, or creating a cord to hang things). The decorations should inasmuch as possible be aligned to the powers and purpose of the spell,
which also means that things you can't modify at all (like jewelry) might make for a worse spell vessel than things you can modify, like a river stone you can paint on, even if the jewelry has a type of stone that 'corresponds' with the spell's purpose or has personal sentiment to you.
The second trick for making the spell vessel more long-lasting is appropriate and correctly-employed magical technique.
There is a real, material difference between humming an incantation over a spell vessel, and humming that incantation while you are in a trance and can intuitively flow with the energies, teasing them out until they have properly arrived.
There is a difference between humming in a trance state, and humming in a trance state within an open compass.
And you can open a compass, but you can also speak to the gatekeepers and the powers that govern the roads and ask them to clear the way of power, and bless your spell vessel with power so that it always shines with the virtues of that road.
And instead of letting your mundane mind sigilize your intent, you can practice spirit flight and travel to the otherworlds to discover sigils already linked to great power, power that you do not have to charge yourself.
Therein (or within trance) you can also discover charms that make it easier for you to imprint your will onto wood, or bone, or stone; you can find charms that make it easier for you to call and fix powers that serve your purposes.
This is the development of tech.
Witchcraft could be said to be the movement of power between worlds, so this means not only having energy tech and astral tech but also physical tech - your ability to work magic within the physical so it radiates into the physical the ways that you want it to.

━⊱•⊰━ A traditional (ink, marker, and pencil) commission for TatuaYinepu of Set and Horus the Great (Heru-Wer)~ I really enjoyed doing this piece. Their complex relationship seemed to unfold as I drew out the details, and I think it’s one of my favorite traditional pieces currently. I hope you enjoy it when it arrives in your mailbox! <3 Thanks so much for commissioning me. I love doing work of the Egyptian Gods!
