totally and utterly out of the blue here, but did you ever read/hear of this good weekend article about christopher pine in which his wife said, and i quote, "sometimes its too tricky to go out as a family, so we just leave christopher at home" and i just picture him doing that freaky-ass bouncing thing alone, on his couch, in pitch darkness, and well that's what was first thing on my mind this morning.
If I were part of Christopher Pyne’s family I’d leave him at home too…
Just look at him. He’s terrifying.
You won’t allow me to go to school. I won’t become a doctor. Remember this: One day you will be sick.
– Poem written by an 11 year old Afghan girl
This poem was recorded in a NYT magazine article about female underground poetry groups in Afghanistan. An amazing article about the ways in which women are using a traditional two line poetry form to express their resistance to male oppression, their feelings about love (considered blasphemous), and their doubts about religion.
One of the best articles I’ve read all year. Here’s the link

…often women aren’t allowed to be characters in history, they have to be stereotypes. Cleopatra was a poet and a philosopher, she was incredibly good at maths; she wasn’t that much of a looker. But when we think of her, we think: big breasted seductress bathing in milk. Often, even when women have made their mark and they are remembered by history, we are offered a fantasy version of their lives.
