also let me take the opportunity of being back here to share that i've attempted to write a fanfic for the first time in my life, that's just how much i love shameless and ian gallagher. i've been kind of writing it throughout the big year of 2025, but also kind of not, cause i'm in college and, to make it worse, in my internship, so really busy. i have around 90k written, but it's a mess hehe not even the first chapters are fully written down, and i keep going back and making changes, which makes me change everything because linearity and butterfly effect lmaoo
it’s a rock and roll band au. i wanted it to be a milkovich rockstars au, but ian somehow got in the middle because i love my babygirl so much, and now he’s an important figure in the picture. it’s set in the shameless show universe but diverges a little. firstly, they all like music; it’s an important piece of lore and what unites them all. then, mandy never meets ian in s1, so mickey never goes to juvie, so mandy gets preg and mickey is the one to stand by her, and that’s the pinnacle of what makes his relationship with terry go full s4 to worst.
he puts mandy in aunt randy’s to never come back to the milkovich house ever again and cuts ties with the milkoviches, kind of. terry is an imposing figure and torments mickey a lot, and to stand a chance he has to work with some big figures not even terry would want to mess with, which takes a lot from mickey, who’s doing it basically for survival, to protect mandy and his own ass. it’s kind of a mexico arc thing, he knows he’ll undoubtedly get fucked in the end, and they don’t fully trust or accept him (he’s a milkovich, after all), but hey, it’s done. mickey’s in, for reasons i won’t explain here (spoiler alert!), and everybody hates it: the clan, mickey, mandy, terry, everybody! anyway, fast forward: terry did the worst thing ever, the worst imaginable crime, and mickey set his mind that he can’t live this life anymore, terry went too far and mick he’s going to have to kill his dad. things don’t go as planned, and now he’s in jail. oops!
at the same time, ian never met mandy or mickey. he doesn’t have friends or a normal teenage life, he doesn’t have anyone to fall for when things go down, since he infamously doesn’t go for his siblings. so when kash and clayton and monica at thanksgiving happen, it’s all too much, and the bipolar comes full force much earlier than expected. he’s depressive bad, and then he’s up and running and ruining his life sooner than canon, and he has no one to be by his side. by 18, he’s a school dropout, bipolar, lonely gay, locked back down in the south side under his siblings’ vigilance. he feels like his life is over, all his dreams crumbled to nothing, he has nothing to look forward to, etc. kash gave him his job back out of pity, and ian, being his same old self, is living his life in this monotonous way just to keep his family happy, but he feels miserable.
a little forward in time, mickey’s lucky he’s out of jail after like six months! he lulled the judge with his pretty eyes, clean record, and bruised body courtesy of his abusive methhead father, plus a pretty convincing speech about understanding his mistakes and wanting to own up to them, pay what needs to be paid, get back into society, and change his life. he’s never doing crimes ever again! he’s going to study and work and give his family, his sister, everything thats left for him, a better life. he’s young, and he knows he’s made mistakes, but he believes he can change. once he’s out, he’s on parole, he needs a job and kash gives it to him, for reasons i’ll leave in the air (that’s set when ian’s full bipolar out in the world doing god knows what). he stays for a little while, then jumps to some money-laundering scheme from the clan just in time to miss ian comeback. he tries to use this time to pay what he owes, his debt to his old clan, so he can leave and move on with his life. he’s set on leaving chicago forever and never looking back, but honestly, mickey proved to be such a valuable piece for the clan that they kind of don’t want to let him go.

eventually, lip leaves after ian promises he’ll keep in touch and that he’s taking care of himself. and honestly, lip hasn’t seen ian this happy and healthy in a long time, so he decides to trust it, at least for now. mandy stays, and she and ian become bffs so fast, they click right away, gossip, cook together, team up to bully mickey a little. and gallavich still happens, but way less often, mostly because mickey’s still uncomfortable with mandy around.
anyway, as you guys can probably guess, a bunch more shenanigans happen after eric meets the trio. eventually, they become a band, and that’s the real beginning of the rock band au. the whole idea is that you need a hard skin to make it in this industry, and eric knows mickey’s explosive, full of secrets, and overall fucked in life, all of which could easily turn into huge problems down the road. BUT he also sees so much potential in them! eric truly sees in mickey a full-on global star, that man, that face and personality was just born to be a rockstar. if there’s anyone who can keep up with eric, match his drive, and actually make it to the big stage, it’s mickey. he fully believes that and he invests everything he’s got into them. in eric’s perspective, mandy is just such a nice kind of bonus, a buy-one-get-two kind of deal, so he’s absolutely thrilled at the idea of having her join them. ian kind of just tags along, but the three of them, south side rats through and through, understand each other in ways no one else really could, and they work together. that’s what makes it all click.
anyway! that’s kind of the first act! from this point on, it’s about them together, figuring out how to actually be a band, realizing how much practice and sweat and blood and tears it’s going to take. it’s them being a little south side, breaking rules, and making their way into the industry. it’s about finding what kind of sound they like, what their band means, what it stands for. and, most of all, it’s about slowly realizing that this isn’t just a side project or something “fun”, it’s a career. something mickey and mandy are really investing themselves into. something that could, honestly in one of the best-case scenario, lead absolutely nowhere, but they’re fucking in for it, and that itself its crazy.
all this, the idea, comes from the urge to see mandy and mickey as famous musicians.
people are instantly attracted to mandy’s energy. mick avoids the famous life, the interviews, the photoshoots, and interacting with crazy fans, which only makes people want him more.
they are absolutely crazy and feral. they always say the wrong thing and constantly get canceled. some girl mandy bullied in high school comes forward on twitter. all the men in chicago say they already slept with her. mickey is canceled for beating up gay people when he was a teen. everybody wants to know what he was in jail for, how that happened, and what else there is in his dark past.

they have enemies. they have magazine covers. they have full theaters of fans wanting to listen to them. they have creative block. they have the label pushing for another album and blocking songs they deem improper. they have blackmail. they have accusations. they have incest theory acusations. all the worst things you can imagine are hapening to them. they have their nudes leaked!, fuck it, why not?
there’s also the fun part. they have money. they travel, first time in a plane and they kind of love kind of hate it. they get, for the first time in their lives, to have a good pillow, to go to the dentist, to go to the supermarket and buy everything they want, to buy clothes that were nice and reflect their styles, to find pleasure in things other than drugs and sex and violence, which used to be their escape. they have friends! they have bonds, they have psychologists, they have diagnoses. they have treatment for their trauma. they heal there and then the famous life just give them a new trauma! :DD

BUT he also sees so much potential in them! eric truly sees in mickey a full-on global star, that man, that face and personality was just born to be a rockstar. if there’s anyone who can keep up with eric, match his drive, and actually make it to the big stage, it’s mickey. he fully believes that and he invests everything he’s got into them. in eric’s perspective, mandy is just such a nice kind of bonus, a buy-one-get-two kind of deal, so he’s absolutely thrilled at the idea of having her join them. ian kind of just tags along, but the three of them, south side rats through and through, understand each other in ways no one else really could, and they work together. that’s what makes it all click.
anyway! that’s kind of the first act! from this point on, it’s about them together, figuring out how to actually be a band, realizing how much practice and sweat and blood and tears it’s going to take. it’s them being a little south side, breaking rules, and making their way into the industry. it’s about finding what kind of sound they like, what their band means, what it stands for. and, most of all, it’s about slowly realizing that this isn’t just a side project or something “fun”, it’s a career. something mickey and mandy are really investing themselves into. something that could, honestly in one of the best-case scenario, lead absolutely nowhere, but they’re fucking in for it, and that itself its crazy.
this post is SO SPECIAL to me i love meta analyses of karen jackson shes such a complex character i to this day am not sure how i feel about her but if theres something I KNOW is that shes very courtney love coded the same way mandy kind of is too you all have to agree with me

Shameless S3E1 is 137 days after Frank left, which takes us to April 2013.
S3E4 is the beginning of summer break 2013, which falls from late May to early June.
S3E5, the child support lady shows up by the end of the episode. June?July?
S3E6, July? August?, the Gallaghers are taken by child support and Lip is put on a group home with Ian, so he's 17 (also, is the same episode Mickey is raped, and we know Mickey was born in august, so there's the possibility he was still a minor?).
S3E7 Fiona wins in court and gets the kids back. August?
S3E8 school starts so September 2013.
Then, in S3E12, by December 25th, 2013, Ian runs away and joins the army. He uses Lip ID, which means Lip is 18 now.
Which leads to the big question: What is Lip's astrological sign? I want to say he's a Libra 'cause he's just the biggest motherfucker ever, but I'm not sure.
I truly feel Ian wants kids with mickey more than he wants kids in general. Like if mickey never gets on board to having children Ian would be ok with it. Because having this perfect white picket fence dream and 2.5 children with anyone else would not satisfy Ian longterm. We only ever seen the desire of wanting kids from Ian when it’s tied to Mickey. I go back and forth on if they will have them but agree it would be waaaaaaaay down the line. At least when they are 35+ pretty sure Ian was only 23? 24? when they got married it bothers me people push the kid storyline on them so soon. And it’s why im happy shameless ended before they can follow through with it.
god i completely agree with all of this. i think for one that ian wants mickey more than he wants kids as a WHOLE, so if mickey was really against it then ian wouldn’t want to break up. But yes, i also think ian only wanted kids with mickey. i mean he never even brings it up until the last two seasons (obvs with mickey) and then there’s the whole yevgeny thing when ian was clearly eager to be a dad with mickey.
i also 100% agree about people pushing it on them too early. WHY do you want them having kids after two years of marriage??? After everything they’ve been through, give them a break for fucks sake. Kids aren’t easy, kids are really hard and you should not be having them if you haven’t dealt with your own internal stuff first. I think that’s the whole message of shameless, to break the cycle of abuse. i don’t think either of them would want to have kids before they were in the right head space, had therapy and all that. and mickey going to therapy is a long way off.
also, they have NO biological clock?? there’s no way of them having fully biological kids anyway, so they don’t need to rush to anything. they’re both men, they have all the fucking time in the world, even if they did want to have a kid that was fathered (in the bio sense) by one of them. Men can have kids at like 80, so. stop rushing it?
but i don’t think the bio stuff matters at all because i think they would adopt. Considering how much ian clearly cares about people (shown by him tryna help Trevor’s kids and being an EMT and yevgeny) and because they grew up in a really shitty environment, they would want to adopt. and i say an older child specifically, because they both would want to help someone in a shitty situation instead of adopting a baby because (from what i know) babies are often adopted much more than older kids.
please i just hate the narrative that all couples need to have kids to then suddenly be complete. kids should not be something you check off a box to get the perfect family. kids are a huge decision and commitment which involve putting a child over your significant other. and if you really want them to have kids i beg you just give them a decade of marriage beforehand because gallavich deserve that more than anyone.
