the setting is a vaguely late-20th/early-21st century american west where a reinvention of cowboy culture was necessitated by a nuclear fallout event and resulting mass-deindustrialization. there’s also radioactive man-eating fungi and vampires 👹

the story starts years after ansem leaves a long, tumultuous marriage in the city and returns to the countryside to work as one such cowboy. during a bounty-gone-wrong, he meets a destitute yael and offers him a temporary job & home. from there the story is essentially a relationship study, the two trying to navigate their feelings for each other while struggling with past and current traumas.

it’s also widely about, like, the transformative & healing power of trans-queer love/existence. ansem is a re-closeted bisexual man who is struggling with a recent intersex diagnosis, so meeting someone who is as confidently and happily queer/genderweird as yael is very eye-opening for him ❤️‍🩹 ok thats all. billions more in-depth thoughts on my ig highlights 🫶
