Horner’s Syndrome

A rare condition arising from damage to nerves from the sympathetic trunk supplying the eye. Symptoms are ipsilateral to the damage, and is characterised by; (1) miosis (constricted pupil), (2) ptosis (drooping eyelid) and (3) anhidrosis (loss of sweating). There may also be an apparent enopthalmos (sunken eye).

Various causes best divided in to; Congenital (look for heterochromia), Central (stroke, MS, tumours, syringomyelia), Pre-ganglionic (pancoast tumour, cervical rib, trauma, thyroidectomy) and Post-ganglionic (carotid dissection/aneurysm, cavernous sinus thrombosis)

Orbital Cellulitis

life threatening infection affecting the entire orbit

organisms; strep pneumoniae, staph aureus, strep pyogenes

symptoms - fever, peri-ocular pain, inflamed lids, diplopia, pain with eye movement

signs - reduced eye movements, proptosis

optic nerve dysfunction –> reduced vision, pupillary defects

can lead to abscess formation, thrombosis, meningitis

Management = IV antibiotics, surgery for abscess

I Heart Guts: plush organs in the name of science!!

“I Heart Guts is the brainchild of anatomically obsessed illustrator Wendy Bryan Lazar, who loves internal organs and all they do. Founded in 2005, their bare-bones family operation strives to offer plush organs with love, style and geeky puns. They like to think of the Guts as what you might find inside a dissected Hello Kitty.

The guts grew from a single drawing of a broken heart, after a string of bad hookups, dead-end relationships and lame-o boyfriends. At the time, the creator was also doing a lot of drinking and smoking, so a sad liver and bummed-out lung followed. Years later, the creator’s husband wondered, “Why don’t you do something with those darned guts?

I Heart Guts plush organs were named Best of Toy Fair by Popular Science magazine in 2014. Time Out New York said of the guts, “The deliriously happy bunch is sure to put any get-well card to shame,” while Entertainment Weekly ventured: “Who hasn’t dreamed of owning a shirt with a bright, animated uterus on the front?” Black Book magazine says, “These furry toys can transplant love back into any tired relationship” and arbiter of hip Cool Hunting enjoys the “bizarre, giggle-inducing designs.” Wired blog’s Geek Dad notes, “Imagine the fun of saying ‘Go upstairs to bed, sweetie, and don’t forget your pancreas!’”
