I’m rather late this year, but here’s my 2025 Art Summary! I ended up having so many fandoms this year that I couldn't even tag all the characters lol. Past years have mostly been one fandom though, so I feel like that's a decent reflection of how everywhere this year has been. Btw, click into the pictures if you want to see them with remotely decent resolution!
The reflection questions are answered under the cut since I’m a rambler. The template I used is adapted from the one here in case anyone else wants to make their own. :)
What events did you participate in (with art)? I didn’t do a ton of events this year actually, but there were a few: Summergen, Fandom Trumps Hate, Virtualization Fanzine (page art and merch artist), and the Land of Myth discord server Yule Exchange. I also played around with some temporary tattoo designs and made my first button!
What was your biggest challenge this year? I feel like it shifted throughout the year. For much of it, I just didn’t feel like I had the spoons for creativity, and then when I did have the motivation, I felt like I needed to save my spoons for the events I’d signed up for so I couldn’t really follow the muse. Similar to last year, though, I usually was able to create okay once I got past the start-up energy barrier, but I did struggle a lot with perfectionism on my zine pieces. Honestly, there really wasn’t one overarching challenge this year.
Did you try anything new this year? I did! I got into a zine for merch for the first time, which was incredible! The zine actually accepted me for art, fic, and/or merch, which was SUCH an honor. It’s a virtual zine, so I didn’t get to work on my preferred forms of merch, but I did get experience with Discord Emotes, which was a lot of fun!
I also have continued to expand into cosplay (and did my first full-build piece with Connie, but that’s a different format of art, so I’ll leave that one out of here for now haha). That said, I was doing Tulip one of the days and was trying to come up with a good way to do her hand number and ended up going with a temporary tattoo. While it doesn’t quite feel like art so much as design, I put together a bunch of options in CSP and printed them off. The color limitations of print really kicked my but, so the coloration wasn’t quite what I’d hoped for, but it turned out pretty well! I also used my local library’s makerspace to make buttons, which was a great experience! Again, the piece wasn’t quite art (I made it with a stock image of an inflatable frog costume, not one I drew, and simply edited/added the drawn text), but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out!
Where do you think you most improved? I had quite a few pieces this year that are sloppy sketches with the line art stage skipped entirely, and honestly I really like them. In the past, I’ve struggled a lot in getting past the lineart stage and (other than my zine page art piece) I was really able to let go of that perfectionism/rigid mindset. I’m not sure that my rendering actually improved much, but I did have a lot more fun making those pieces. Some of them are basically just concept messy sketches with full rendering, which I think would look better slightly cleaned, but others I think turned out just fine as are! Unfortunately, it means less of my new work is suitable for my art portfolio, though.
What are you most proud of? Kinda already touched on it, but I was super excited to have been accepted into the Code Lyoko zine for so many positions. I also think I got creative with using my art in new ways for protests and cosplay and such, which is usually outside my comfort zone. And then lastly, I’m pretty proud of myself for starting to go with the flow on some pieces, even if that means the end image is lowkey a mess haha. Also, not any of my work, but I do think the Gaanaru fanzine/compilation I put together for my niece’s Christmas gift turned out really nice!
How’d this year compare to your 2024 goals? Oop here we go. 2025 Goals Met: -Organize a go-to zine portfolio for comics, merch, page art, and spot art applications [Basically done! I have a page art portfolio with comic-specific labeled pieces and a merch art portfolio] -Experiment more with drawing in sketchy art style with full color/rendering [Nailed it!] -Do ONE of the following: 1. 30 minutes put to music [Half done!] 2. Open Up Your Eyes fully thumbnail 3. Fanworks for other people’s fics [Finaglc!!] 4. Participate in an event with art 5. Draw and post for a new/niche fandom (Infinity Train, Sym-Biotic Titan, Irondad, The Flash, etc) [Done for IT, Irondad, and Undertale!! Just didn’t post...]
2025 Specific Goals NOT Met: -Try to draw every month (even the tiniest phone doodle counts) [I got 10/12, so close!] -Design Handplates charm as anniversary gift -Design CS Charm [I did start a spin pin design!] -Make an ongoing project list to pin to my tumblr. This applies mostly for fics, but that way people coming to my page can see what fandoms I’m actively creating for and what they can look forward to (as well as have an opening to ask questions if they’re interested). [Hey look! It’s that goal that’s been on here for years that still hasn’t gotten done xD] -Post more (at least 5 times throughout the year) and maybe look into Cara or whatever the non-instagram art app is. [Nope, I don’t think I posted even once last year other than my summaries... whoops] -Experiment more with screenshot redraw/character replacements
Alrighty then, now it’s time for 2025 goals!! My goals for this next year to create space for being able to follow the muse when it comes. I had a month where my brain just really was working with me, but I didn’t feel like I could do anything with it since I had other creative obligations I needed to me first.
Specific Goals: -Sign up for few events unless the muse is already there. -Try to draw every month (even the tiniest phone doodle counts) -Finish designing Handplates charm -Post 3 times other than these summaries -Experiment more with screenshot redraw/character replacements -Make an ongoing project list to pin to my tumblr -Do ONE of the following: 1. Finish putting 30 Minutes thumbnails put to music 2. Design/create a physical fanart button (can be previous art) 3. Fanworks for other people’s fics 4. Finish Handplates Vodka Cranberry AMV 5. Draw and post for a new/niche fandom (3Below, Ben 10, etc)
Overall, how’d the year go? It went okay! I didn’t feel like I was able to do everything I wanted, even when I had the energy, which was frustrating, but the fact that my muse even showed her head is a good sign. And I do feel like I did some decent work, so I think it all turned out alright. Onto 2026!
