1. Do you think that you’re a good person?
“A good person? I’ve done many rash things when I was younger, and, let’s just say I’m not proud of some of the things I’ve done.”
“While I do not count myself as a villainous sort, there are those in the Shinsengumi who are better deserving of the title of being ‘good’. For example, look at...Heisuke. He may be an idiot at times, but he’s still young. He hasn’t make the mistakes I have yet. So...he’s more of a good man than I am...”
6. Do you think that killing is ever justified?
“Killing, and combat in general are for killers. Rest assured, I am one of them, though instead of taking advantage of others, I stand with others who are not afraid to kill to protect. If killing one is the only way to stop one from causing harm to an innocent, woman or child, I will not hesitate. That is just killing, right?”
“But sometimes secrets are meant to be kept. Should someone find out something they shouldn’t, and that information should be used to cause harm, they will speak no more. It might not be just or riteous, but it is what is needed.”
“Honestly, a life taken is something that should be mourned. Be it a comrade or a worthy enemy, they no longer draw breath, and someone had caused that. You’d kill someone’s dream. Someone’s future.”
“...I like to say killing is just in order to protect, but how many lives must be taken to protect one single person?”
7. Have you ever done anything that you feel to be very morally wrong?
“Yes, and for your own safety, I ask that you never ask me that again, or I may lash out.”
9. If you committed a crime, would you accept punishment willingly?
“Of course I would. For people who uphold the law, how low have we fallen if we ourselves break them? I would gladly offer my head to the commander, and ask for it to be taken, should I ever be shameful enough to commit a crime.”
“Committing a crime would make me as bad as the Ronin that I stop in Kyoto from time to time.”
13. What could make you break your own moral code?
“Should an authority be about to persecute an innocent without proper evidence, I will step past the line of obedience, which I have entrusted myself to keep. To see an official causing an innocent grief while lacking a reason to do so is enough to get my blood boiling, and to forget my place.”
“I would gladly break it to save a friend.”
“The Shinsengumi are the closest thing I have to a family in Kyoto.”
14. Have you ever doubted your own beliefs?
“...Yes. It comes back to me every so often when I think back on the Shinsengumi, and what a certain doctor was attempting to refine. I just want a simple life in the end, and that man made this all a mess. Maybe if I spoke up about it back then, more comrades would have been spared that...illness.”
15. Would you always be loyal to your loved ones even if they wronged you?
“If I hadn’t, I’d have left the Shinsengumi years ago. Especially a couple of those ol’ idiots. Hijikata...Kondou...Shinpachi, they all mean a lot to me, and if they were to harm me, I would believe that they had a reason behind it.”
“I trust them, and I always will. Even if one’s mind is clouded, I will be by their side. But...”
“I kind of chose one over the other in the end, didn’t I?”
16. What would you consider a fate worse than death?
“...Surviving while you watch men you trained, men you knew so well, die before your eyes. You might have known who they were, about their families, and about children they might have left behind. And if those around you died...why not you instead?”
“Why couldn’t I have taken their place?”
