Affinity: Compelling Studio Portraits of Animals Photographed Against a Stark Black Backdrop by Brad Wilson
From lumbering African elephants to diminutive cockatoos, fine art photographer Brad Wilson appears to look into the soul of unusual animals from the far reaches of the planet, isolating each bird, mammal, or reptile against a deep black backdrop. The images are part of the Santa Fe-based photographer’s ongoing Affinity series that explores human’s relationship with animals, both positive and negative, while highlighting the fragility of each subject with the aid of soft studio lighting. From his artist statement:
In the midst of our modern human civilization with all its technological complexities, animals still remain stark symbols of a simpler life and a wilderness lost. Perhaps these images can stand as a testament to this other fading world, and remind us, despite the pronounced feeling of isolation that too often characterizes our contemporary existence, that we are not alone, we are not separate – we are part of a beautifully rich and interconnected diversity of life. Wilson is represented by PhotoEye Gallery, and you can see more of his work on Instagram and in the 2014 book Wild Life.

Some Background Designs made for Space☆Dandy episode #5. I had the chance and honor to work directly with Shinichiro Watanabe at Studio Bones last year, it was great! Didn’t had much time to add more details or props, I was mainly able to focused on the general shapes.

Here is a selection of research made back in 2010 where I had the opportunity to work as a Visual development artist for Ankama’s first Feature film “ Dofus Book 1, Julith “. The movie is now released in French Theaters. It was great working on this project right after graduating from Gobelins, learned a lot from the Directors Anthony Roux and Jean-Jacques Denis. Si vous êtes en France, je vous encourage vraiment à aller voir le film et supporter une production 100% Française.
“Les Hirondelles de Kaboul” (The Swallows of Kabul) upcoming french 2D animated feature film directed by Zabou Breitman & Eléa Gobbé-Mevellec (Les Armateurs studio). Watch the pilot. Synopsis : Kabul under Taliban rule. Two neighborhoods and two couples. One conservative - Atiq and Mussarat have been married for 20 years and are deeply engrained in the traditions of Afghan life. Atiq works as the chief guard at the women’s prison. Mussarat is very ill and fights to remain a strong woman till the very end. One modern - young and in love, Zunaira and Mohsen are against all the same traditions. Under the Talibans, they’ve both lost their jobs as lawyer and university teacher and have difficulties to make ends meet. They have to sell their few possessions to buy food. Yet they’re determined to maintain their modern values. One day, a stoning. Then an act of humiliation. Then a fight… and life takes an irrevocable turn. When the lives of these diametrically opposite couples become intertwined, sacrifice becomes the price to pay for love.
