Today I got to bring back a character I havenât touched in quite a while and Iâm actually really glad I got to do it.Â
My groups donât do one shots very often and I kinda hate doing them because Iâm the type of person who puts WAY too much time into my character backstories and designs to play them only once. So a while ago I designed a character strictly for one shots. Sheâs known as Dema, the Daughter of Chance.Â
Her story goes like this, she once existed in the real world, outside of D&D. Dema was a teenage girl who didnât actually like the game and common made fun of her brothers and their friends for playing and enjoy such games. One of her brothers bought a book from online that was supposedly a real spell book (this was sort of a running gag in our group at the time) and Dema ended up getting to the package before her brothers did. She decided to open it, to see how much theyâd be willing to give to get the book back and itâs magic took effect. Out came an aged, robed man who called himself DM. Dema naturally freaked out and told him to get the fuck out of her house. This upset him and he decided to âgrant her his greatest blessingâ which basically means he cursed her to an ever changing game of D&D.
The whole idea for Dema as a character is that I, as the player, randomly role for everything including race, class, height, weight, and even gender. The only thing that stays the same is her mind, alignment and sheâs always a humanoid. Every new game I rerolled with the same concept in mind and made a new Dema. So the first ever game I played with her, she ended up being a gold dragonborn barbarian with only a D20 as a holy symbol (that she couldnât throw away no matter how hard she tried) and a magic book that basically acted as a PHB and would tell her what she was capable of but little else, which didnât actually help much because her intelligence score was hopelessly low.
Over the course of the last few years Iâve played this character and sheâs actually changed a lot. She naturally started out hating everything about DM and the curse put on her but as sheâs bounced between identities and met people along the way, sheâs actually learned to enjoy herself and care deeply for the people she traveled with. One of the sessions I played as Dema I managed to roll a cleric and I decided to go all out with her faith that time. She called herself the Daughter of Chance and fought and acted in DMâs name.Â
For the most part, today wasnât a very interesting addition to the story that is Dema, just a wood elf sorcerer, but Iâm still glad I got to dust her off again. Though it does make me think, I really should think up an end to her story at some point.
