So, the wheel of year. I personally struggled to gather information on the sabbats as I found a lot of things, even the associated holidays themselves were men’t for the Northern Hemisphere. So I’m just going to throw a little bit of what I know out there. Hopefully, it will help some of you!
Traditionally, the witch’s year begins with Yule and ends with Samhain, which is the process I’m going to follow as it’s the cycle. And note, that this is a summary of each sabbat, I’ll do single posts on each when the time comes!
∘₊✧──────✧₊∘ SABBATS ∘₊✧──────✧₊∘
YULE- also known as Yuletide, is basically Christmas for witches. It represents rebirth, new beginnings and renewal. It is the Winter Solstice and is held on the longest night of the year. (This is the beginning of the re-birth/maiden phase)
IMBOLC- also known as Candlemas is the second sabbat of the cycle. This is a time of growth. It is celebrating the approaching end of winter. It is a midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox.
OSTARA- marks the Spring Equinox. One of the only two days, when day and night are in perfect balance. This is a time when Winter has left so life is coming back to earth. It is a celebration of spring, returned sunshine and growth. (This is the beginning of the life/mother phase.)
BELTANE- also known as May Day or the Great Rite is a festival of fire and fertility, a time when all is at it’s fullest. We celebrate life, fertility, and things being at their peak. this is a midpoint, we are now, half way through the cycle.
LITHIA- Also know as Midsummer marks the Summer Solstice. Meaning Lithia is held on the longest day of the year. Lithia (being the last sabbat in the life/mother phase) is a time of strength, warmth and sun.
LAMMAS- Also known as Lughnasadh, marks the first harvest. It is a midpoint between the Summer Solstice and the Autumn Equinox. This is a time of abundance and harvest. (This marks the beginning of the death/crone phase)
MABON- Also known as the second harvest marks the Autumn Equinox (The only other day of the year where night and day are in perfect balance other then Ostara). I personally think of it as a Witch’s Thanksgiving, this is a time of gratitude, harvest and thanks.
SAMHAIN- Also known as All Hallow’s Eve and the Third/ Final Harvest is the last sabbat of the cycle. This is a time of death and letting go, as the leaves fall and the Earth dies, even if only to be reborn. The cycle is complete, thus it starts again.
