corporations trying to profit off of queer people by showing their support for only one month of the year is bad
and
it’s fun to watch conservatives get pissed that they can’t shop at target anymore because the big bad rainbows will corrupt their children :(
and
the existence of rainbow capitalism in the first place proves that society is now in a place where supporting queer people is the more profitable and thus more popular opinion and that means something
are all viewpoints that can absolutely coexist
nobody ever praises me or pats me on the head or feeds me small treats despite my consistent excellence in the field of not purposefully ripping cabinet doors off their hinges to fulfill some sort of maladaptive destructive urge
So i was reading one of sy mongomery's books recently and she talkes about how wolf spiders can see the moon. Can a lot of insects, like, not see her?
I’ll tell you a secret: most arthropod eyes are incredibly shitty.
they may have a near-360-degrees of view, but most insects eyes simply aren’t on the same level as yours, and it’s because of physics!
see, each of those individual bumps on those eyes up there is a convex lens, which focuses light onto a retina to form a picture of their surroundings.
however, the power of a lens dramatically decreases the smaller it is, because small lenses capture less light to make into an image!
to these animals, the world is a brightly colored blur that extends out for a few feet around them, and ends there. so no, they CANNOT see the moon. weep for them.
to insects, humans have god-level foresight and prescience! HOW DID YOU KNOW THERE WAS FOOD OVER THERE, HUMAN. TELL ME HOW.
but some spiders are different.
see that? those eyes are completely smooth! jumping spiders in particular have developed eyes with a single massive (for a bug) lens on the outside, and a second focusing lens on the inside, giving them single-image vision much like your own.
the diagram of their eyes looks like a pair of binoculars, and their focusing power is completely nuts, enough so to make up for that underpowered lens!
so yes, some spiders CAN see the moon! take solace in this fact.
Hello Bunjy! May I ask for you for cursed or blessed facts about Jellyfish please?
the Golden Jellyfish of Lake Palau don’t sting! their bodies contain a symbiotic algae from which they get their energy, so they don’t need to actually eat.
instead, the jellyfish rise to the surface every morning and follow its path across the lake, providing their algae with sunlight!

Oh for fuck’s sake. -_-
Cats generally don’t hunt rats- they’re too large and aggressive.
These cats don’t know the territory and the majority are going to end up being run over by cars, killed by dogs in back yards, killed from rat poison, die from dehydration or starvation because they don’t know where resources are. This is not fair to the cats.
They’re still going to get injured and spread disease amongst themselves, even if they can’t breed.
This sudden influx of a huge number of cats above the already doubtless high free roaming and feral cat population is going to have a devastating impact on the local native bird population.
This is a bad idea for every animal, domestic, feral, and wild native in the area.
Please do your research! There is so much misinformation out there and a lot of lies.
Everyone should know the truth so please try to know as much as you can so you can spread awareness and help!

EACH ADDITION TO THIS POST MAKES MY BLOOD RUN COLD
This is a cranberry bog (unflooded) it’s how cranberries grow. Once they’re ripe, the blog is flooded and the cranberries harvested.
Basically by using big floaty things to round them all up and then scooping them out of the water.
thank u. i hate it a little less but the horrible little man in my head is still screaming “BOG BODY BOG BODY BOG BODY”, but i appreciate the education,
oh here is a fun lil perspective on cranberry harvesting i never heard about anywhere else. the guy who owns the restaurant right down the road from the farm, who fries our chickens sometimes, is from Boston, with the strongest Boston accent ever, and in a former life before he started slinging reasonably priced barbeque and occasional organic chicken, he was a cranberry farmer.
His farm was on the leading edge of kinda using organic/sustainable pest control methods, and one of the things that they did to keep insect damage down was that they encouraged wolf spiders to live in the cranberry field, to eat the bugs.
This was all fine and good until they flooded the bog. Now, you don’t just like flood the bog and then go around it in a boat or whatever. No, you use hip waders to get in there and put the big floaty things where they go and get all the berries and such.
Well when you’re in the bog in hip waders, that makes you the tallest thing. Wolf spiders can swim a bit, but they don’t like it, so they’re, quite understandably, looking to climb out of the water onto a tall thing.
So yeah the first interview question he always asked potential cranberry bog harvester hires was “are you cool with spiders?”
“You’d be amazed,” he said to us, shaking his head a little, “how many guys would just straight lie. Like, you think I’m asking you that question to be cute? Nah man you’re gonna have like a hundred wolf spiders trying to climb your eyebrows, you gotta be chill, those wolf spiders are fellow employees. You really gotta be chill with spiders if you’re gonna work a cranberry harvest.”
happy international workers day to the cranberry bog spiders

if anyone needs me i'll be frothing at the mouth thinking about the origin of language and interspecies communication. happy wednesday.
how did we learn this? who taught us this? is it coincidental? is it observational? is it that something in the source of these sixteen languages stems from the same animal instinct that causes each of these species to call out to their own kind? I Am Going To Lose It.
Patricia McConnell talks about her research into this in her book “The Other End of the Leash: Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs” which also addresses a ton of other interspecies communication things and not just about dogs! Highly recommend reading it
