There’s actually a lot of history regarding the development writing systems and why there are different visual representations of numerals, but the short answer is: it’s regional, and you probably picked up how to make your numbers look based on your parents or your primary school teachers

I do it out of spite because in grade school a kids detective story identified the culprit by saying NO American wrote their sevens with a line and I thought that was super flimsy evidence and it made me so mad I started putting a line through my sevens so the fictional detective would be wrong and then kept doing it for several decades since.

I started when I got an independent study helping my neuropsych prof research pain medication as part of a gigantic grant, and it was part of the style guide and requirements to ensure that 7s looked like 7s and not anything else.

Hand written notes and notations were also only able to be written in blue or black ink.

If any corrections needed to be made, you needed to make ONE line through the offending bit of text or numbers.

Any deviation from these three rules for hand written notations had the risk of losing the grant. He was dead serious about it and watched me write stuff down for the first few weeks and stopped me every time I wrote a 7 with no cross, and made me cross it. And now i will cross my 7s for the rest of time.

All of this was especially hilarious to me bc my handwriting is. Ah. Very Bad. Which I demonstrated to him.

He just said that a lot of researchers have bad handwriting and is probably why the rules were instituted in the first place.

As long as he could read the NUMBERS, and I did not violate any of the above riles and could read any text-based notes for the eventual paper, bad handwriting was just a hazard if the job.

Similarly I was required to take up this habit because of paper medication charts and tracking. It makes the 7s clearly not badly written twos, even if you’re writing very small or very fast.

GDP, good documentation practice. Required in my line of work (pharma, medical devices). You may get audit nonconformities for it, and if sufficiently grave, lose your license to market your products. It’s serious business.

My mom was a high school math teacher and she was pro-dash so that’s how I learned it. When I was in middle school I used to help her grade homework and that’s when it became really clear why. If you want credit for your work make sure the person looking at it knows it’s a seven.
