LOCATION: THE TEMPLE.
TIME: EARLY MORNING.
A PRAYER TO POSEIDON
i woke up and wished that i was dead.
since he first arrived six months ago, lochlan had only visited the temple twice. the first time was the day he arrived at camp and accepted his heartsong, the second was the morning after he had the dream about his mother and sat besides his fathers statue in silence before dozing off for gods knew how long.
lochy’s feelings about his father were confusing, he’d always wanted to meet him and it was initially the reason he came… but then he was filled with rage when he discovered poseidon had been watching over him for years and never came back, never saved his mom, never helped him when he was in his darkest moment.
the logical half of his brain understood poseidon was a god, he couldn’t just intervene in the mortal world and there was no guarantee that lochy and his mom would have been better… he wanted to let go of the past, love his father, but that felt like a betrayal to his mother.
instead, he tried not to think about it often and focused on the positive things his father gave him… his ability to speak to horses and his gift of healing. they gave him a purpose, a reason to wake up every morning, and to keep going.
i lay motionless in bed, i thought of you and where you’d gone.
slowly entering the temple, the statues of the other gods loomed over him as he walked towards the end where the big threes statues stood. his father was to the right of zeus, the trident in hand and those same sea foam green eyes looking back at him.
"hi…" he said in a low voice, breaking his glance at his father as he put down his offering. a mixtape of his mom’s favorite songs and a box of horse shaped crackers.
maybe that wasn’t the right thing to offer to the god of the seas, but they mattered to him.
"i don’t know what i’m doing…" he trailed off, words were never something the prince of horses was good at. "thanksgiving is just around the corner and the holidays have always been the hardest time of year for me since i lost mom…" his voice cracked when he mentioned her, a lump growing in the center of his throat. he could feel the guilt building up.
"i know i have all these people who care about me, i finally have friends who actually like me…" quinn, bear, samson, cian, adam. those who felt like family.
"... but i’m feeling so alone again and it scares me, dad." there were others he'd attached himself to, those who left and moved on with their lives. would it happen again? would he lose more people the way he lost his mom?
lorelai's words from his dream rang in his mind, don't let that darkness consume him again... but what if he failed? what if he disappointed her?
he sat down on the edge of his father’s statue, curling himself into a ball like a scared child trying to comfort themselves. "everyone has these wonderful families they can go back to and i’m… it’s just me."
and the world spin madly on.
"i know you can’t be here with me, but i just… i need my dad."
bit by bit the edges of the wound stitched and sealed together, the debris was brushed off as the potions did it's job. sometimes he wondered what the ER's of the world would look like if all of them had a witch or something on staff. whoever made these must be rich. but a lot of what lochlan was saying hit home. adrian had taken off too and everything for adam just felt... quiet. he did his thing, he lived his life, and kicked some ass. trained, fucked, practiced, loved and then put the whole thing on repeat. a good arm's length away from everything and everyone else that didn't fit in his bubble.
the wall had gone up after kovi left, he had his core and he didn't have a reason to open himself up to more disappointment. keeping everyone out hadn't stopped leonardo from walking away too, that was another down. when he thought about the people he fought the hardest for, the ones he loved the most, little by little that list got bigger. but regardless, one thing was never going to change,
"i'm never going to leave you bro," adam promised with all the certainty his voice could carry. "just don't go somewhere that i can't follow," a characteristic smile cracking at the edge in response to the softer one that lochlan peddled, hand folding over hand, covered further by adam's - large, calloused, and strong. "shit would be embarassing for you when i have to come kick down the door."
he set the gauze to the side, "c'mere man-" adam added, pulling lochlan into as much of a bear hug as he could without preventing further injury, "you're my brother, bro. my best friend."
The best part about accepting the call wasn't getting his powers or being some kind of hero he never knew he wanted to be. No, it was making friends and discovering a family that helped fill that hole that had been left behind after his mom's death. Even those who had left, he still thought about them regularly and wondered how they were doing. How was Kovi and did he like working for his mom? Did Rene return to his old life? It hurt to say goodbye to them, but he hoped they were happy and he hoped for the day they would all reunite.
Adam was the brother Lochlan never knew he needed, the person he could always confide in. He wasn't one to think about fate or destiny, but were their paths always meant to cross? The two seemed to bring out the best in one another. "Good." he said, at this point Lochlan understood the others charisma and sense of humor. "I don't have anywhere I think I could go alone. Not anymore." There was Assateague Island, the place he'd always felt safe but that wasn't his home. Not anymore.
"Brothers." Physical contact wasn't something that Lochy particularly liked, but he didn't budge. He leaned into the hug and squeezed the other as if to make sure Adam wasn't going to slip through his fingers. "You can't get rid of me now, Adam." he gave a gentle laugh. "Stuck with me for life."
Their circles didn’t intersect quite the same, but they’d all experienced it together. The departures, the leavings, and the deaths; it was hard for Adam to fault anyone who decided that this life wasn’t for them. He could never understand it, or even relate to it, but if nothing else he could respect it: it was a tall order to ask anyone to risk their lives for others.
Sometimes that risk, that cost, it came up.
Like their fathers, Lochlan and Adam were brothers of a sort. “I think I can put some of this on a cloth and the potion will do that for me…” Adam mused as he held up a vial before proceeding to empty the contents onto some gauze. “Fuck bro, this is a nasty one.” Leaning in, he pressed it gingerly to Lochlan’s wound - mindful of any sensitivity, and of the injury itself.
“Look- Lochy-” For once Adam was at a bit of a loss for words, so he searched for what he wanted to say: his priority, his intention. “I love you, man. And I want you to know that if you ever need anything…” He folded the gauze, applying the clean side to the wound as he wiped gingerly at the mending edges to keep any dirt out of the wound. “I’m there. Always, no matter what.”
While Lochlan and Adam had different fathers, he felt a kinship to the son of Zeus. He felt like a brother to Lochy. Perhaps their own fathers could learn a thing or two from the two of them, there weren't any petty squabbles over territory or power vacuums. Just two men who looked out for each other.
Feeling the cool sensation of the gauze from the vial touch his wound, the son of Poseidon winced but he didn't jump or cry out too much. He'd taken care of plenty of injured horses to know that meant it was working. "Yeah, those things in Athens were really nasty. Must have come directly from hell, or something."
Once the gauze was applied and his injury was taken care of, Lochy rested against the wall of his cabin to catch his breath. The adrenaline of the day was wearing off and he was feeling exhausted. "I love you, too." He didn't expect to hear that from his best friend but maybe it was a result of a long day. "Thank you.. I really needed to hear that." he admitted, giving a weak smile. "I feel like everyone I care about is leaving. Kovi, Leo, Skylar, Rene." he reached a hand out to grab the others. "I'll always be there to fight by your side, thick or thin. No matter what."
Adam was the first person who was kind to him at camp, something that meant more than he may have realized. "You're my best friend in the world."
While Lochlan would have opted to dress up as something like a unicorn this year, he couldn't find anything that wasn't a slutty version of the creature so he decided to dress up as one of his favorite characters. Woody from Toy Story. He went as the toy once when he was six or so, but thought it might be fun after he rewatched the movie last week. He even wrote his own name on the bottom of one of the boots like Andy did.
Expect Lochy to say there's a snake in his boot all night.
having friends was new for lochlan, he tended to be alone for most of his life until he accepted the call and came to camp. there he made plenty of connections and people seemed to like how authentic and earnest the child of poseidon was. and then they started to leave, making lochy realize how easily attached he got to people once he opened up some.
cian was one of the demigods still at camp who he had befriended, the two of them sat alone by the lake and there were plenty of times when they didn't speak. but that was okay, he was never good with his words. the company was more than enough.
“stay a little longer… i don’t want to be alone yet.”
that isolation he had been so accustomed to, what was once numb, now felt like a thousand cuts.
the son of the seas had never been a particularly superstitious person, maybe it was years of staying out in the middle of nowhere with wild horses he looked after or because he could explain away the bumps in the night. but then he discovered he was a demigod, so who knew what else was real in this world? it felt like there was something going on at camp, someone or something following them wherever they went.
and it was unnerving lochy.
a few of the demigods were sitting by the fire in the middle of camp, it kept them warm in the crisp autumn air and darkness seemed to surround them. lochy didn't want to leave, not yet at least. without skylar, the poseidon cabin felt... so empty.
He can't help the excitement that fills his voice. Sure the times he'd caught sight of it, the idea of Lochy running head first into the fight had been terrifying. He'd wanted to rush down and help him but the son of Poseidon was no weakling. He proved that even with his more healing inclined gifts he was still a force to be reckoned with. Though looking at him now Quinn couldn't help but wonder if they needed to get him some sturdier armor.
"Well you could have fooled me. You looked like a natural demon slayer out there, kicking ass left and right."
Continuing to use his telekinesis to help the other they've reached about the halfway point to the infirmary. Seriously this camps layout could use some work. His attention shifting between Lochlan and the distant structure that would be where he could get the taller man fixed up. Hearing the others praise though he can't help the blush that creeps along his cheeks. It's been a rough few days for everyone, so with this he tries to get some levity.
"I don't know about an action star. But I did have my little nests, it's how I got such good views of you. Real good views, you we're really hot out there Lochy. Though the bastards kept swarming so I couldn't stay in any place too long."
This fight wasn't like any that the demigods had faced up until this point, the enemy felt impossible to kill and then they had to deal with the monsters who were still attacking the city afterwards. They'd come a long way, though there were a few people who they seemed to lose over that time. Kovi, Rene, Leonardo, and Skylar were the four who seemed to stay on his mind. He wished they were there to celebrate with the demigods, maybe they saw the fight from their television screens wherever they may be.
"Oh, that's really sweet." he said with a faint smile, Lochy had pushed himself further today than he'd ever done before.
The two continued walking, crossing over the bridge that connected their part of camp with the rest. He could hear the fish trying to talk to him and see what was wrong, but Lochy ignored them. He wasn't in the mood to hear them begging for treats again.
"Oh, thanks. I just had my two main moves that helped me fight them, nothing compared to the.... was it a gun that you conjured?" So much had happened in such a quick amount of time that he didn't get to process most of it. "Did any of them get you? I can try and heal you once I'm patched up."
"Oh. Did he say nice thing about me? I mean. I guess I don't want to know if he said mean things about me. But he was nice and I'm going to..." he trailed off the last thing he needed was more sad things in his head. He offered a small little smile, and shook his head. "Never mind. It's nice to formally meet you Lochy. You can call me Luci if you like. Or whatever other nickname you want I'm nor particular about things like that." he said with a little hum as he got closer to the other his eyes trained on the wound. He wondered how deep it was but he was sure Lochy would not want him sticking his finger in it to find out. At the least he would need to clean it to see if there was debris in it though.
Lucian looked at Lochlan and quirked a brow. "Lochy, I'm weird but I'm not carry around suture needles weird." he said with a laugh turning his pockets inside out to show they were empty. "Um. I can go get some though if you want? And stuff to clean it out. We should flush it there was a lot of dust and debris there. Stone pieces. Wouldn't want that to heal inside of you. So you do want the scar then? Because I can just." he wiggled his fingers to indicate he could use his divinity to heal the other if he wanted. "Seal you up nice and tight."
While Lochlan was happy that they seemed to get stronger with this fight, he couldn't help but think about those demigods that they lost along the way. Kovi, Rene, Skylar, and Leonardo. Four people who meant a lot to the son of Poseidon and who he still thought about a lot, Leo should have been there fighting alongside him but hopefully he saw them fighting from a tv screen somewhere. Thinking about the other son of Dionysus for too long made Lochy sad, but he didn't need to dump all that on someone who was virtually a stranger. "Oh, yeah he said nice stuff about you." That was towards the end of Leo's time there, so he didn't get to say much about Lucian. "It's nice to meet you, Luci."
Lochy shrugged at the comment, he didn't know the guy too well. "I mean, I don't know what you do in your spare time." He always carried horse treats in his bag of holding and a few other trinkets for them, but that was his special interest after all. "Oh, you can heal me? Yeah, I think I'd prefer that. I think I'd like to try and not have a scar if I can help it." he said, lifting his shirt to show the scar.
"That looks pretty bad yeah. I can fix you if you wanted?" he asked holding out a hand. He had a lot less skill in it than Lochlan did but the single wound was straight forward enough, in reality he could have probably done the stitching himself. HIs fascination for the human form had led him to doing just a few human dissections in a lab during college. It was surprising what you could convince a teacher to do in the name of a lesson.
"Um I guess before that though. I'm Lucian. I'm the son of Dionysus. And I know who you are already. Seeing as you saved my life and all." he said with a sad little smile, tongue in cheek, glad he wasn't a total mess in front of Lochlan right now. Maybe just a very tired looking one. He was sure the dark circles under his eyes were probably just a little scary to look at.
"I can just stitch it if you want me to do that instead? Sometimes scars can be nice reminders of things in life. Like your body as a canvas you know?" he and Leo had once talked about that, scars both mental and physical made you stronger, the stuff that grows in place of the wound thicker and more resilient even if it sometimes wasn't pretty. Lucian's brother who wasn't there anymore either.
pretty much all of lochlan's medical knowledge came from horses, he was a wildlife biologist before camp so of course he'd studied enough to know what he needed but he only really applied anything medical with the horses he used to care for. caring for injuries, helping them give birth, and checking on their health. his powers? it was all instinct, he seemed to just know where to guide his gift to keep others up.
"yeah, leonardo mentioned you a few times." he frowned at the mention of his friend who was now gone, he tried not to think about it too much but lochy was realizing how alone he was feeling over the last week or so. "still, you can call me lochy if you want. it's nice to formally meet you, lucian."
getting up wasn't going to work so he nodded as he sat back down on the porch, pushing the shirt up and tossing it aside. too torn up to salvage, he'd have to order another one of it. "do you know how to stich up injuries?" he asked. "do you have medical equipment on you? i don't think i have any on me."
"No need to apologize Lochy. That's what family is for."
Quinn reaches out to help steady the other man. Gentle hands moving to guide the son of Poseidon as they start to step off the cabin porch. He was far too short to act as a crutch to the other man, but he still took a spot beside him. In a flash his eyes glow blue for a moment as he lets his powers drift out, the soft shimmer of his telekinesis sliding over Lochlan's frame instead to do the work for him.
"You were pretty bad ass out there Lochy. Trying to give me a run for my money?" He laughs sweetly, a bright smile on his face as he tries to lift the others spirit.
lochlan was thankful for the others telekinetic powers, steading his weakened frame as they walked down the cobbled path back towards the infirmary. why did it have to be so far from the cabins, anyway? that didn't make sense to lochy, but he knew chiron probably wouldn't care to hear whatever it was that he had to say about the matter.
"oh, you saw that?" he asked with a faint smile as they walked down the slope and crossed over the bridge that covered the river that led towards the lake that everyone liked to go to. action wasn't something lochy normally did, he was usually standing in the back and keeping an eye on the big players. players like quinn. "thanks, quinn. i don't normally do that kind of stuff, it's really scary."
"i didn't get to see you out there, but i heard you were standing on the top of buildings shooting monsters down. like some kind of action star."
Another one gone, taken this time. Truthfully, Adam hadn’t known Elian well - he’d wanted to, plans were made, conversations had, invitations extended, hope sewn as he pushed Stephanos to try and to connect. There just wasn’t enough time, and then it was too late. He’d gone to Athens to help, not alone, but when the last of the fiends were hunted and killed. People were dying, more of them were leaving and Adam had a hard time faulting them - who in their right mind wanted to risk their lives for people who would normally not think twice about them?
“Hey Lochy,” Adam took the steps up the porch, moving into a squat as he looked at the nasty gash to the other’s side, “that looks bad-” he said, he’d been patching himself up for years, and it wasn’t as if he was unprepared. Going into his bag for a tonic and a clean bit of cloth from the first aid kit his dad partner had reminded him to pack. “Shirt up bro, let's see it.”
this was perhaps their biggest fight to date, elian's death was a reminder of how dangerous all of this was. lochlan tried to heal him and keep him up, but the fates had other plans for the son of hecate whose heartsong could still feel in all of theirs. still, it was hard to not feel partially at fault for not being able to do the one thing you could do. while those like adam or arthur were fighters, lochlan's job was to keep his team mates up.
still, he'd lost so many people recently and that wasn't something he wanted to focus on. he may not have known elian well but it hurt just as much as leonardo or skylar leaving one day.
"hi, adam." he said as the other approached, he was glad the son of zeus was still there. he was probably the person lochy was closest to who was still at camp, someone he could lean on. simply nodding, he lifted the torn up shirt to show the deep gash that was still bloody. "you think you can stitch it up?" he noticed the supplies adam had pulled out. "i didn't even realize how bad it was until i got back."
Lucian had not stayed behind to fight fiends, he was in no shape to do so, and even more he had no will for it after well- everything. He didn't even fight when they put him back on a Pegasus by himself to get back to camp, all he could do was cling to the horse and try to stay awake.
When he woke back up he was in his cabin and mostly ok though very banged up, he decided to get up and out of the now very empty feeling cabin now that Leo was gone. Moving out the door he decided to see who else was around, there was probably a lot still happening. Changing into clean clothes, a sweater far too big for him, and some light sweat short he wandered around the camp, barefoot to feel the grass beneath his feet.
Seeing Lochlan on the porch of his cabin Lucian approached slowly. He was very likely- no most definitely- only alive because of Lochlan healing him when he did. "Hey." he said with a tiny little smile, and a wave, his voice normally bright and chirpy had a raspy sore quality to it now. "I um...thank you. For saving me. Are...are you ok?"
healing people had become second nature to lochlan, he wasn't a fighter like quinn or arthur and he didn't have an interest in magic like ezequiel or elian did. he had complex feelings about his father but knowing that he could use poseidon's powers, that historically had been destructive, to heal others was a silver lining. he was someone who spoke with actions and acts of affection, not words. keeping his team was his way of showing he cared, even if he didn't know everyone very well.
"oh, hello." lochlan said, trying to give a weak wave but his hand returned to the deep cut that was visible to the child of dionysus. he knew that lucian was leonardo's brother but he didn't really know him, just that he'd kept the other up in the chaos of athens during the fight. "yeah, i'll probably be okay but this cut is really deep and i can't concentrate to heal myself." he said matter of factly, as usual, before he tried to pick himself up and look towards the direction of the infirmary.
"and you're welcome, i'm glad you survived the battle." even if that wasn't true for everyone.
Leaving his cabin he was greeted with the view of the son of Poseidon sitting at the edge of their porch. It was in this moment that he was reminded his best friend was no longer at camp. Things had changed and Sky was needed back home. He no longer stood amongst the demigods, but upon leaving Quinn had been tasked with looking after his brother. It was a task he would do everything in his power to perform.
"Now what am I going to do with you."
A soft fond sigh escapes from the blonde as he closes the distance between himself and Lochlan. Hand reaching out tenderly to assess the damage that had been done. Quinn had stayed back to fight in Athens. Choosing to stay and defend the city, hunting down each and every one of those monsters that rose up from the pit. It had been in the city that he'd seen Lochlan putting up a truly heroic fight, but also working so hard to save as many lives as possible.
"Let's get you to the infirmary. They'll have you right as rain in no time okay?"
having not only leonardo but skylar leave camp was rough for lochlan, he knew his brother had to deal with stuff back home but he was feeling even more isolated than ever. he wasn't the most social person at camp and lost two of the most important people to him, quinn was a connection to skylar. at least he had the other there still with him, fighting for another day even when hope felt lost.
"oh, sorry if i worried you." he said as he picked himself up from the porch, leaning against one of the pillars to steady himself before he took a step forward onto the cobbled path that led towards the infirmary and the rest of camp. "yeah, that sounds like a good plan."
Lorenzo felt the shift in everyone when Elian died. It was as if the light that sparked inside each of them, dimmed. Lorenzo helped defend against the demonic fiends, using his light to eviscerate all those who dared cross his path. A sentiment that would only be fueled when one of them was felled. He was angry, confused. Why did he even care about someone like that? He hadn't known him and yet the tears streamed down his face as he took on hordes, slashing through them with his light.
Only once at camp did the damage to his own body become apparent. Still, it wasn't anything as bad as what the demigod across him had. He approached slowly, eyes full of concern, but there was a calmness and stillness that hadn't been there before.
"Hey, Lochlan, right? I'm Lorenzo, one of the newer demigods. I can see that you are hurt, so please tell me what you need me to do for you? I can carry you over to the infirmary or use my powers to put pressure on your wound till we get you to where you need to be. Just know that I won't be leaving your side, okay."
"Would you like to hold my hand on the way there, or would you prefer just leaning on my body?"
it had all been a bit overwhelming for the child of poseidon, he was there when elian died and although he didn't know the demigod very well... they all felt the pain in their heartsong, it dimmed a little in that moment. everyone was crying and upset, emotions that lochlan didn't know how to handle so he stayed in the back and simply helped aid the other demigods in the midst of battle.
just move along to make it through.
seeing a blonde he didn't recognize, lochy knew that there were a variety of new demigods who recently arrived in the absence of someone who showed up. "um, hi." he said awkwardly, the demigod was never good at introductions like this. "you don't have to, i think i'll be fine." he wanted to go into his cabin, but that wasn't possible.
he tried to walk down the cobble pebbled road towards the infirmary but nearly stumbled into the grass, catching himself with a tree. "okay, maybe i'm not so fine."
while some of the demigods had returned to camp, lochlan stayed behind to help fight off the last remaining monsters who remained. mostly there to keep the other demigods alive and fighting another battle, once the last few strays of monsters were slain and the demigods left athens before anyone could identify them or ask any questions.
it wasn't until the group got back that lochy realized he was injured, his shirt was torn to shreds and a deep cut along his side where he was still bleeding. that wasn't good, he'd need to take care of that. sighing, he sat on the porch of his cabin. skylar was gone, leonardo was gone, but he was still here. as they came to mind, the water he tried to bend didn't seem to want to comply. maybe it was his emotions or exhaustion but it splattered all over him.
"guess i'll need to get someone else to check it out." he told himself, wincing as he realizing now just how bad the cut was.
