SHE WATCHED THE OLDER WOMAN CLIMB THE STAIRS with the kid in her arms, ready to fall asleep now that the mother's embrace kept them safe. Anna smiled softly at the sight, knowing and understanding that sometimes life got hard and busy and complicated but the end of the day the job was simply fulfilling. to know that she was helping parents who had no time at their hands, keeping their child safe and happy for a few hours each day before they could start school properly - that, and the money was good. “or with someone who—,” he stopped himself, he shouldn’t speak ill of his marriage in front of his child’s babysitter, his employee. how unprofessional. “you don’t need to know that, i’m sorry.” there was a moment of silence from him, the sound of the road mingling with the nagging presence of his blood in his ears. he turned to look at her once more, brief, but intense. “we are grateful for you, however. you’ve been a dedicated support, so… i thank you.”
