The scream jolted him from his drunken stupor to start focusing when the worry tightened in his chest over how serious this was becoming. “Hey, what the hell just happened? Sam?” Serge started pacing up and down as he gripped his phone tight. “Slow and steady, that’s it. Don’t panic, yeah, just listen to my voice. If you’re coming over the bridge, make a right and the church is a few blocks up.”
“A tree or a branch, I don’t know, I’m f-fine.” She stammered out trying to keep her sobs under control, having him on the phone helped more than she realized. The dark night sky didn’t help when the street lights started flickering on and off. “I’m on the bridge.” The usual barely filled river was now crashing against the old brick bridge but she tried her best to keep the car straight despite the wind getting harder. “Where are you? Are you at the church?”
