“You get me. But then again, you always have,” Mellie replies, giving Sam a small smile. In the few years she had lived in Charleston, he had become like family to her, and she was forever grateful. “Our kids are gonna be best friends just like we are.” She says with a nod, giving his arm a gentle nudge with her own. “Well if you’re right, I’ll buy you Chipotle.” The brunette teases, smirking at Sam as he inspects her stomach. “Yeah, it said boy too. Apparently it’s crazy accurate, so who knows? It could be.” Once Sam starts talking about Poppy, she smiles, listening to him speak. It was obvious how happy he was, how in love he was with both his wife and daughter, and it made her so happy. “Yeah? That’s great. If I didn’t have to finish school, I’d probably stay at home too.” Mellie nods at the thought, smiling some more when he talks about Alex. “Do you have any recent pictures? Lemme see.” 

“Yeah. You get me, too.” He nods through a smile. Mellie truly is his best friend. She and Toby have been the best support system he ever could’ve asked for, but now he and Mellie can relate on an even more personal level about being parents. A smile forms on his lips as he thinks about how good of a mom Mellie will be. “Oh, definitely. Alex will only be a few months older, so they’ll probably be in the same grade in school. We can take turns picking them up.” He chuckles, although he’s serious. He plans on them still being best friends when their kids are in school. “Well let me know as soon as you find out.” Sam knows she will, but he can’t help but be extra eager. “We’re really lucky that she’s able to. Maybe you can stay home after you finish school. Even if it’s just for a little bit.” Sam offers with a small smile. “You know I do.” He jokes as he gets his camera back out, flipping to some he had taken just the older day of the small redheaded baby. “She looks just like Poppy. It’s actually really fucking freaky.” Sam laughs, shaking his head softly. “She has my smile, though. Or it looks like she does. I don’t know, but she’s so beautiful. So sweet, too...smiling at anyone who will talk to her. She doesn’t get that from me.”

“That’s what I said! I thought Mason would be cute for a girl too.” Mellie replies, laughing a bit. “I liked the idea of something musical for a girl too, but we haven’t settled yet. I think we’re going to wait until we know for sure before deciding on something for sure.” She shrugs, pausing to take another bite of her food. “The Chinese gender thing? It’s this old wives tale, I googled it. You put in the mother’s birthday and either your date of conception or your estimated due date and it tells you if you’re having a boy or a girl. It’s supposed to be pretty accurate.” Mellie replies, smiling. “Enough talk about being nervous though, I don’t want to stress out too much. Tell me more about how you’ve been or about Poppy or Alex or work or something.” She adds on, giving her friend a smile. “I feel like I’ve been talking about myself for an hour now.”

“It totally would be. I say go for it, Mason regardless of the gender.” Sam offers with a small shrug. He’s so proud of Mellie and how far she’s come in the past year. All he’s ever wanted is for her to be happy and now she finally is. “People say you look different if it’s a boy or a girl. I’ve seen my mom pregnant with a boy and Poppy pregnant with a girl, and you definitely look more similar to my mom. You’re stomach is higher.” Sam says as he leans forward, lifting Mellie’s shirt up a little to inspect her stomach. Something that would be completely weird with anyone else, but she’s his best friend. “What did the Chinese gender thing say? Did you do it?” He asks curiously before taking a sip of water. “Well...we’ve been fine. I’ve been working more, picking up some shifts at the aquarium. Poppy is staying home full time, so I never have to worry about finding someone I trust to watch Alex. Although now that you’re having a baby, you and Tris are going to need some practice watching one.” Sam laughs softly. “Alex is good, she’s amazing...growing and changing every day. She looks so much like Poppy, she’s just a mini version of her, I swear.”

Mellie smiles at Sam’s teasing, making a face at him when he suggests Samantha. “I’ll run it by Tris. He’s leaning towards a gender neutral name for a girl though, so no promises.”  She jokes back, listening to him speak. She knew he was right, that it was normal to be nervous, but Mellie was used to waiting for the other shoe to drop. It always did, but this time she really hoped that it wouldn’t. “Thank you, Sam…that means a lot. Really.” Sam had been there for her through a lot of ups and down, and Mellie was grateful. “Yeah? You think so? Tris really wants a boy.” She murmurs, giving her stomach a thoughtful glance. “I looked up the Chinese calendar test thing to predict the gender, but I don’t know if I really buy into that sort of thing.”

“We gave Alex a gender neutral name without trying, because we just knew the baby would be named Alex. You could name her Mason if it’s a girl. It’s unique, but it’s not unheard of.” Sam shrugs, trying to be helpful. “I think so. I could be wrong, but I’ve just seen the difference, so I know.” He shrugs, even though that sounds completely crazy. “I didn’t even know that was a thing. What did it tell you?” He asks curiously through a laugh. “I really wanted a girl. I’m not opposed to having a boy in the future, not that we get to pick. Watch me and Poppy end up with like three girls.”

“Yeah…plus if it’s Mason Benjamin, then he’d have the same initials as me. MBL.” Mellie points out, laughing softly. “So that’s cute too. It’s really the only name we like so far.” She shrugs, reaching down to rub her stomach lightly, a habit she had picked up since finding out that she was pregnant. “I know it’s normal, but I don’t know if that makes me feel better, you know? But I guess the fear of the unknown is common. I just have to believe everything will be okay.” Pressing her lips together, Mellie lets out a breath, nodding at Sam’s reassurance. “I know. And I am happy. Happier than I’ve ever been. It’s just hard to shake the what if feeling sometimes. Thank you, though. I really hope that you’re right.” Giving her friend a smile, she reaches for his hand, giving his fingers a gentle squeeze. “Thank you, Sam…for everything. You’ve been such an amazing friend to me ever sincce we met. I love you and appreciate you so much.”

“That’s cheesy as hell. But it’s cute.” He chuckles, shaking his head at her softly. “If it’s a girl, Samantha is a really cute name.” He tries to say with a straight face before laughing. “I’m obviously just fucking with you.” Sam chuckles before taking a sip of water. “It’s normal, I promise you. It’s something you’ve never done before. Tristan hasn’t done it either, so you guys are going to be nervous. It’s scary as hell to know that little person in there is going to need you.” He tries his best to reassure her, because he really did feel like that before Alex was born. “Nothing’s going to happen. You and Tristan are going to have this baby and be happy, okay? I have no doubt in my mind.” He puts his hand on her back, pulling her closer. “You don’t have anything to thank me for. You’ve saved me just as many times as I’ve saved you, babe.” Mellie has been a great friend to him through everything he’s been through since they met. “I love you too. You’re my best friend, and I couldn’t be more proud of you.” He kisses the top of her head before smiling softly. “I think it’s a boy. You look more similar to my mom when she was carrying Evan than Poppy did with Alex.”

“Thank you.” Mellie murmurs, giving Sam a gentle squeeze. “Yeah….we like it. It’s important to Tris too, which makes it better, I think.” She points out, reaching for his glass of water. “I’m excited, I really am. But I’m nervous too. Were you nervous?” She asks after taking a small sip, glancing back at her best friend. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m so happy. I’m just worried I’ll fuck something up like I always do. You know me, something always seems to go wrong. I’m really hoping that part of my life is over now though…I don’t want anything to happen.”

“It would be a great way to honor his dad. And it’s a cute name.” Sam nods with a smile. He would tell Mellie if he didn’t like the name, but he does. At her question he gives her a look. “Of course I was, Mel. I was terrified.” He listens to her and nods his head softly. “With Evan it was different, he wasn’t my kid. With Alex...she’s my daughter, and I can’t fuck up. She needs me. I think about her all the time. And I’m still scared, you know. That something could go wrong. I think that’s normal.” He shrugs, reassuring her. “Nothing has gone wrong lately,” Sam points out. “You got the love of your life back, you’re married with a baby on the way. You’re finishing school. But I would be lying to you if I said I wasn’t nervous. I promise you it’s normal.” He smiles softly before reaching for her hand. “But if there’s one thing I’m certain of, it’s that you’ll be a fantastic mother.”

“It was typical us, really. We can’t do anything normally, it’s a blessing and a curse.” Mellie jokes, taking another bite of her food. “Yeah. I mean I only ever had an older sister and Tris is an only child, but I can imagine. Thanks, Sam. I really hope I will be.” Mellie knows that she’s young, but she also knows that for the first time in  her life that she’s happy and excited about the future. She’s in a stable relationship, and there’s nothing to worry about. “Ha, yeah…I guess he or she will be, hopefully. For a boy we like Mason….Mason Benjamin, after our dads. We haven’t really found a girl name we’ve liked though. We’re waiting to find out the gender before really settling on something, but waiting sucks. I’m impatient as hell.”

“I’m happy for you, babe. I really am.” Sam smiles softly as he pulls Mellie in, resting his head on top of hers. “Mason is cute. I like that.” He nods after taking a bite of food. He knows how Mellie is feeling, in love and excited for the future. He was like that after he met Poppy. Even though it’s different for her and Tristan because they have a history, he still can relate some. “Poppy and I already had the boy’s name, since it was going to be Alex either way.” He chuckles softly, taking a sip of water. “So I’m not much help in the name department. You’ll find out soon, though. Especially with the testing they can do these days.”

“You sure? I know you guys probably have your hands full with Alex.” Mellie replies, giving Sam a look. She knows he has more experience with babies because of Evan, but two babies was still a lot to handle. “We can worry about that once baby Leclerc arrives.” Shaking her head, Mellie reaches for her burrito, taking a bite. “Oh god, telling Tristan was…I don’t wanna say a disaster, but it kind of was. We were sitting and talking about him starting to be okay with starting a family, right? And then I was like, shit, what day is it, and Tris was like, that’s not funny, and I was like, no I’m serious, so then we went to go get a test and surprise.” She laughs at the memory, tucking some hair behind her ear. “Tris really wants a boy, so I guess I want a boy too. I honestly don’t care either way though.”

“Yes, I’m sure. She’ll be bigger by the time your baby gets here.” Sam shrugs, taking a bite of his food before chewing slowly. He listens to her talk about telling Tristan and nods his head, but he can’t help but laugh, maybe just because of how she’s telling him. “I guess it’s a good thing he was okay with it, since it was about to happen.” He teases, still laughing softly. He can just picture the two of them having this conversation. “Both are great, but it’s different. Not in a bad way, just different. I know you’ll be a great mom, though. Damn, that’s going to be an artistic child.” Sam chuckles, looking over to her. “Do you guys have names picked out? You know Poppy and I had Alex forever because of our middle names.”

“You’re welcome.” Mellie replies, giving Sam a smile. “Thanks. Luckily I have a pretty good relationship with my professors, so I’m sure they’d be understanding if I had to miss class sometimes. I mean it’s that or bring a newborn to class…and I’m pretty sure nobody wants that.” She points out, laughing quietly. “Well yeah, I know birth control isn’t 100% effective, but we were pretty damn careful. At least you and Poppy weren’t using anything.” It doesn’t really matter how it happened though, they had been planning to start a family at some point anyways, and now it was just happening a little sooner. ”Yeah? How many kids do you guys want? I think two might be my limit, but who knows. Things change.” She shrugs, shaking her head when Sam goes off to find his camera. “You’re silly. Will you do maternity pictures for us once I’m bigger? We’ll pay you,  of course.” Mellie asks, grinning with her hands on her stomach for Sam, waiting for him to take the photo. “Oh, our kids are gonna be best friends. We’ll make them hang out until they like each other. Kid and grown up play dates.”

“You know we’ll watch him or her for you, too. Poppy is staying home, and I’m home a lot with this job. So you’ll have people to help you out if you need or want it.” He reassures her, squeezing her hand. “That’s true. I honestly can’t believe she didn’t get pregnant sooner, but we had a few scares before we got married.” Sam shrugs. “I’ve been saying at least three, since I have two sisters. I want Alex to have what I had. Poppy hasn’t really settled on a number, she just says we’ll have what we have. Which is true.” He shrugs again, smiling over at Mellie. “Did Tristan totally pass out when you told him? Because I’m trying to imagine it in my head.” Sam teases her, chuckling softly. “Yeah, of course I will.” He nods excitedly. “Oh, shut up. You’re not paying me. But yes, I’ll do it.” He won’t take money from her even though he knows she just wants to do the right thing. “Definitely. Now that I don’t want to kick Tristan’s ass every time I see him, adult day can be arranged.” He teases, walking back over to the kitchen after he takes the picture. “Do you want a boy or a girl? I know ‘healthy baby’ is the answer, but c’mon. I wanted a girl.” He murmurs, nudging her shoulder. “Since I had already raised a boy with Evan.”

“Shut up, you’re totally hot.” Mellie teases, rolling her eyes back at Sam. She loved being able to joke around with him without things being weird, that was one of the many reasons why they were such close friends. “Yeah, I’m hoping it won’t be too hard, or that I can go to campus as little as possible. We’ll see.” She shrugs, waiting for his reaction, feeling slightly nervous about he’d react. Things were different now - she was married to Tristan, they wanted this baby, but she was sill nervous about how Sam would take it. “Surprise.” Mellie says again, hugging him back tightly. “Thanks, Sam. We had been talking about it, and well…it just sort of happened. We don’t know what whether it’s a boy or a girl yet, but we’ll take hand me downs. Fuck gender norms.”

“I believe that you believe that. So thank you.” Sam teases back, nudging her arm. Mellie is beautiful, and he tells her that all the time. “I know you can do it.” He reassures her, squeezing her a little tighter before letting go. He knew how excited she was, he was in that position just a few months ago. “It does tend to kind of just happen,” he teases, laughing softly. He and Poppy were trying but also weren’t, if it happened it happened, and it had. Now he had a perfect daughter. “Exactly. I’m sure Poppy and I will have another one, but I want to wait a little bit, you know? Enjoy Alex being little. That’s really cool...you know, that we’re going to have kids so close in age. Maybe they’ll be as close as we are one day.” Sam gets up, running over to get his camera. “Keep smiling, I have to have picture from the day you told me you were pregnant. So I can give this to him or her.”

“You don’t look homeless.” Mellie replies, rolling her eyes. “You’re totally a DILF. Don’t ever think otherwise.” She days teasingly, giving him a grin. “If Poppy was here, she’d totally agree.” Laughing softly, she passes Sam his burrito, going to fill two glasses with water fr them. She knew he wouldn’t mind, they had been friends long enough for her to feel comfortable helping herself to whatever, and she knew Sam would do and feel the same at her place. “I’m good. Tris is good too, he’s just finished filming so he’s on hiatus for a few months. School starts again soon for me too, my last year.” She says with a nod, pushing some hair behind her ear. “We’re really good. We got some news, actually. We’re having a baby. Surprise.”

Sam can’t help but laugh at Mellie’s comment, shaking his head softly. “Well thank you, I appreciate it. Yeah, I’m sure she would. She likes to tell everyone about her younger hot husband. I’m still waiting to meet him.” He teases through a smile. It feels so good to be around Mellie again almost as if nothing has changed. Not that anything has, now there’s just baby stuff all around his house. They’re both married, and they’re lucky enough to get along with the other’s spouse. Even though Sam wasn’t a big fan of Tristan at first, now the two of them are friends. “My last year wasn’t that hard, but I did finish early. I’m kind of glad I did now with Alex.” He shrugs. As she speaks, Sam now realizes what he missed earlier. She looks different because she’s pregnant. Of course he’s seen her pregnant before, but not this far along. Not in this situation. He just stays silent for a minute, taking it all it. “Oh...wow, um, okay,” he chuckles, taking a deep breath. “Congratulations, Mel. Seriously, I’m happy for you.” He nods before wrapping his arms around her. He wonders how that’s going to work with Tristan’s job and her being in school. At least Sam can come home whenever he needs to, but he knows Mellie is smart enough to figure it out. “Wow. Okay...so you’re pregnant? If it’s a girl, I can give you lots of stuff. Even if it isn’t, Poppy and I will contribute.” Sam smiles.

Mellie was slightly nervous about seeing Sam again, but not in a bad way. They hadn’t seen each other in a while, and she was going to tell him she was pregnant. She knew he’d be happy about it, but hat didn’t stop her from stopping to get them Chipotle on the way over to butter him up. Plus she was hungry, and she figured he wouldn’t want to cook. 

“Oh,  shush.” She says at his apology, giving Sam a hug in return. “Don’t apologize for spending time with your baby. You look good, buddy. Tired, but good.” Mellie teases,holding up the bag of food. “I brought us lunch.”

“Thanks, I feel like I look homeless.” Sam teases, relaxing immediately as he stands beside her. Mellie is his best friend, he doesn’t have to worry about anything when he’s with her. He doesn’t have to pretend he’s not exhausted, Mellie knows that he has a two month old daughter. But something about Mellie is different, maybe not in a bad way, but...different. “Aw, you didn’t have to do that. Thank you.” He smiles. “I’ll get some plates.” Sam walks to the kitchen, talking to her over his shoulder. “So how is everything? How are you? How’s Tristan? I was watching TV the other night and his show came on, it was so weird.” He chuckles, walking back with two plates.

Sam hadn’t gotten any alone time with Mellie in a while. Mainly because he was adjusting to being a new dad, which he knew she understood. He wasn’t used to being away from any of his friends that long, especially not his best friend. When she called and asked if she could come over he was excited, and it worked out perfectly since Poppy was out shopping with Alex. As he hears Mellie come in the front door he smiles, giving her a hug automatically. “Hey! I’m so glad you called. Sorry that it’s been so long, and excuse the mess.” He chuckles, referring to the baby stuff everywhere.

Sam just shrugs, knowing he should stop complaining since he’s luckier than most. “Did you have fun at your birthday dinner?” Sam asks, changing the subject. “My sisters kind of went overboard with presents, I’m sorry. They just hadn’t seen you in a while.”

“I still can’t believe you didn’t tell me my wardrobe wasn’t appropriate for Canadian weather. I’m pretty sure I borrowed clothes from your sisters the entire trip.” Poppy jokes, laughing softly. “Weird, but good. It’s crazy, I feel like everyone’s popping out babies lately. Eden, Krysta…maybe we’ll be next.” She smiles, going to set the table after kissing Sam back, filling some glasses with water for them as well. “Little baby Alex Lowndes.”

They’re both small like you, it worked.” He nudges her, smiling softly. “The both got pregnant around the time they got married, maybe it’s not uncommon.” He shrugs, letting go of her to put their food onto plates. “Yep.” He nods, feeling himself smile like an idiot. “I think it’s cute that we already have a name.”
