Summary - A little more of what happened between Tommy and Sarah after the events of ‘A trip to the country’
The moment Sarah heard no response from Tommy at her saying that he was late she knew something was wrong. The tension and silence that filled the room strong as she turned to look at him. The blood on his clothes and the look on his face so spaced out like he was thinking and processing everything that had happened before coming here. She can’t say she was expecting Tommy to propose to her but she knew there was no hesitation in accepting, of course she wants to marry him. It would have been one of the happiest nights of her life if it wasn’t for the circumstances but they have time to celebrate, that can be done another time because as of right now Tommy needed her. She had no idea what had happened tonight, did she even want to know what happened? Is it better not knowing? She wanted to comfort Tommy but maybe it was for the best to let him say for himself if he wants to. Whatever it was it was clearly traumatic for him.
She ran him a hot bath to clear away the dirt and blood whoever it belonged to while searching for some clothes as he washed. Tommy had started bringing spare clothes to her place the more he had spent staying at hers so luckily she found a pair of his pyjamas in one of the draws of her dresser. He hadn’t spoken a word tonight apart from
“Work” and “marry me” other than that he was silent, it worried Sarah she must admit. It left her wondering what had happened? If he had done anything? She just wanted to be able to provide him some sort of comfort whatever it was.
After placing Tommy’s clothes on the closed toilet seat Sarah had changed into some pyjamas while he was in the bathroom before she sat on the bed waiting for him. Tommy was in the tub for a while, washing Sam’s blood away and collecting his thoughts together. The only good thing to come out of tonight was that he was now engaged to the women he loves...but he can’t get the events of tonight out his mind, the fear that he’s gonna get a phone call from Paulie crying saying that Sam didn’t make it. No, he shouldn’t think about that, Sam’s going to be fine, of course he is!
Eventually Tommy came out the bathroom dressed, hair a mess compared to how nearly combed it usually is. He felt a little better he must admit, clean but the silence still consuming him. Sarah watched his every move as he slowly walked over to the bed before sitting down, She could see the worry and sadness in his eyes. She wanted to ask him what happened but she didn’t want to push him, all she could do was be patient, watching Tommy hesitantly open his mouth to speak before closing it again. Sarah didn’t speak, she just looked at him while raising one of her eyebrows slightly to encourage him to say what he wanted to say. She watched as he closed his eyes for a moment, softly exhaling through his nose before he opened them again and finally spoke.
“Sam’s been shot” he said causing Sarah’s eyes to widen a little with surprise, Sam’s hurt? Is he gonna be okay? Is he-
“He’s at the doctor’s house with Paulie” he said next as if he could read her mind.
“Is he gonna be okay?” She asked
“I think so” he muttered quietly as Sarah’s eyes softly scanned his face before looking down at his tightly balled fists resting on his thighs.
“Are you okay?” She asked next as Tommy’s eyes softly looked back at hers, Sarah could see the hurt and pain behind them.
“I’m just....tired” he whispered, swallowing the lump in his throat, scared of speaking any louder and Sarah knew. He didn’t want to talk about what else happened that night, he didn’t want to talk about how scared he is for Sam...he just didn’t want to talk. She could see his eyes welling up a little, he didn’t want to talk, he didn’t want to break in front of her.
“You sure?” She asked before her hands were softly reaching out to caress his face, one hand on each cheek. His eyes refused to look at her because he didn’t want to look at her with his eyes now blurred up with tears that threatened to leave.
“Tom” She now said, the tone of her voice catching his attention as his eyes looked back at her. Although he couldn’t really see her due to his vision blurring over with tears...the way she held him and spoke to him gave him the reassurance that Sarah was here to comfort him and that he could tell her how he was feeling and whatever else is troubling him but...he didn’t want to put her through that.
“Yeah...I’m just tired” he whispered again, a single tear now rolling down his cheek but Sarah’s thumb quickly caught it, softly brushing it away from his face.
“Okay” she whispered softly
“Okay” she whispered again before she was slowly pulling them both to lie down on the bed.
Tommy’s head now rested on her chest, her fingers gently brushing through his hair as he tightly closed his eyes for a moment in an attempt to stop any more tears from coming. He didn’t sob or make a sound but his cheeks felt wet, he’s sure Sarah knew but all she did was softly hush him and continue to comb her fingers through his hair. It was nice. As he opened his eyes again his hand slowly reached out to take her free hand, fingers intertwining with hers before slowly bringing her hand to his lips. He softly pressed a kiss, keeping her hand close to him as he closed his eyes again.
Tonight was a rough night...he just hopes tomorrow will be better.
