Supernatural fans, I have a theory.

I have this theory about Sam and Dean, and since most of you are probably in need of some support after last night, I think I'll share.

I think Sam and Dean's relationship is at this both similar and opposite to the relationship that Harry had with Voldemort. Neither can live while the other survives--remember that? Well, I think that with Sam and Dean it's the same idea, only in this case its that neither can truly, genuinely die while the other lives.

They are perfectly, beautifully codependent. By this point in time they have not only saved each other's lives, they have cried, bled, suffered, sacrificed themselves, endangered themselves, and literally died and gone to hell for each other. They are so close, so tangled up, and so very much a part of each other that I think there's a piece of Sam's soul lingering in Dean, and a piece of Dean's in Sam. Neither of them can be really gone, not in Hell, not in Purgatory, and not in Heaven, if the other is still living and breathing on earth. They will always find their way back, because a part of themselves remains on earth.

The only way either Winchester will really die is if they both die together: back to back fighting the forces of Hell, without warning in an explosion, or bleeding out together holding hands. Or if someone (angels, God, anyone) finally lets them inhabit their own special shared slice of Heaven and doesn't bother them anymore.

But for right now? Dean may be gone, taken over, buried. But while Sam is still on earth, a part of him still lives. Buried deep maybe, hidden from everyone, even himself. But I firmly believe that it's still there. Let's take comfort in that, shall we?
