I’m Samantha, a refugee living in Nyarugusu Refugee Camp, Tanzania. Life here is a daily fight for survival. Last week, our community lost 8 lives—five to starvation and three to malaria, illnesses that could have been treated with proper food and medicine. Many of us are hungry, sick, and struggling to stay alive. I share our story to raise awareness and to reach kind souls who may be willing to help. I am a refugee living in Nyarugusu Refugee Camp in Tanzania. I’m sharing my story here so you know who I am and why I’m asking for help.

Life in Nyarugusu has always been a struggle, but last week something heartbreaking happened. Our community lost 8 people.

Five died simply because they had no food.

Three others died from malaria—an illness that could have been treated if we had access to proper medicine.

These are not numbers. They were real people. Neighbors. Friends. Family.

Right now, many people here are on the edge of survival. We are hungry, sick, and desperate. Some days we don’t know where the next meal will come from. Clean water and medication are not guaranteed. Every day feels like a fight to stay alive.

I’m reaching out with humility, hoping to find a kind brother or sister who can help in any way possible.

Even a small amount can mean:

We are deeply grateful to share that, through the kindness of our donors, we were able to receive some much-needed support. With the donations, we managed to prepare and serve meals to our fellow refugees—children, women, and men—who had gone days without proper food. For many, this was the first warm plate in a long time. The smiles and relief on their faces reminded us why this mission matters so much.

But the need is still overwhelming. Every day, more families arrive hungry. Children gather around empty pots, hoping for a meal. Our food supplies are limited, and we are only able to reach a small number of those who are suffering.

Help Nanfuka Walk Again – Support Her Urgent Medical Treatment

Nanfuka is a young queer refugee living in the Nyarugusu Refugee Camp in Tanzania. Like many LGBTQ+ individuals in the camp, she has faced constant fear, discrimination, and violence simply for being who she is.

Just a few weeks ago, tragedy struck. The police, along with members of the homophobic host community, launched a brutal attack on the LGBTQ+ community in the camp. They fired live bullets and beat people with large sticks in a horrific act of targeted violence.

During this attack, Nanfuka was severely beaten and her leg was broken. She is now in urgent need of medical treatment, but resources in the refugee camp are extremely limited.

We need to raise $550 to cover the cost of her treatment and help Nanfuka walk again.

This is a critical time. No one deserves to suffer like this—especially not a child. Every dollar counts and brings us closer to giving Nanfuka the care she urgently needs.

My name is Samantha. I am a Ugandan trans woman and a refugee, currently living in Nyarugusu Refugee Camp in Tanzania. I was forced to flee my home country because of the grave dangers I faced every day simply for being who I am. In Uganda, I lived in constant fear of death, persecution, and imprisonment. My life was not safe.

Seeking protection, I first went to Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, hoping for relief. But the conditions there were almost as hostile as those I left behind. As a trans woman, I continued to face transphobic abuse, threats, and violence. Desperate for safety, I made my way to Gorom Refugee Camp in South Sudan. But my time there turned into a nightmare. I narrowly escaped death after a brutal attack by transphobic individuals. I had to run again — broken, afraid, but still holding on to life.

I finally arrived at Nyarugusu Refugee Camp in Tanzania, hoping once more to find shelter and dignity. Sadly, my suffering has not ended. Here too, I face daily discrimination, harassment, and severe transphobic attacks. I live in fear every single day. I am not safe. I am not free.

As if that weren’t enough, I am also struggling to survive. There is no access to proper medical care. I am living with HIV, and taking my antiretroviral medication is a matter of life or death.
