He returned the soft smile, shaking his head. âOkay, letâs settle with we could both be a little more organized.â Normally, things were easier around each other. Over the course of their time working together, they had found a rhythm of sortsâ now, though.. This atmosphere was different. Careful. And Ethan was anticipating when sheâd bring it up, address the issue that maybe he wasnât the sort to lead a group of so many. Co-lead or not. Â And then heâd have to convince her why this was something he needed and sheâd realize this wasnât about taking control. It was about finding it again. The motion of her hair going up into a ponytail and the next words out of her mouth solidified that small fear.Â
ââŠActually, yeah. That was⊠great minds,â he said faintly to himself before dragging a hand through his hair. There was no easy way to say this. But, it was something he had to sayâ after hours and hours of thought, of feeling and empathizing, Ethan knew he had to try. Sam was his friend; she was a partner. Half of their team. And he cared about her enough to say what could be the wrong thing.Â
He breathed. Wrung his hands. âSam⊠I think you need to take a breakââÂ
âI know that⊠Sam, I found my sister. And you havenât found yours yet, andâ I think that you should look. Take the time for it. Iâ Iâll admit, Iâm not⊠I know Iâm not in a good place. And I know that it looks like Iâm not capable of this, but I am. I know my limits and I know that our Community is going to need someone strong right now, and I just⊠If I can be strong for them and help them in some wayâ IâŠ. Thatâs what I need.â And with every word, he steeled himself for the rebuttal. The ânoâ and the discouragement, and prepared for what he could say in return. How he could justify thisâ something that, quite honestly, he knew could end very badly. And his only argument was he had to. He needed to be there for these people. If he could give them some small comfort, he might be able to make his own peace.Â
Sam watched him, how he ran his fingers through his hair and how he seemed to be ready for a no over his proposal. Sam stood up and quietly walked over to him. She stood in front of him saying nothing for a few seconds before giving him a hug. The type of hug that was reserved for those who one held near and dear to their heart. She let go after a few moments and smiled at him. âWho says that you are not capable? Iâll feed them a knuckle sandwich,â she joked. Sam knew that this was something that was hard for Ethan. That stepping up to be the leader meant a lot of responsibility, and after his actions with Logan, she knew that heâd do what was needed.Â
However, she didnât want to see the goodness in her friend die. Sam let her smile fade. âI couldnât imagine anyone else as the leader...no one could take her place...but...i know you will do what is needed to be strong for this community. To make sure that we are safe. The truth is a lot of our people see you as a hero. Taking justice for those who had their lives taken in such a ... horrible manner.â She looked down. Now it was her turn to open up. She blinked away a few tears that threatened to fall. Sam didnât cry, she just didnât. She cleared her throat.Â
âIâm sorry...that Iâve been sneaking away to try and find her...I know my mind is a mess...and that I need to find her.â She looked up but avoided eye contact. âI...â she took a deep breath. âI think you are right...I do need a break...but that isnât fair to our people. What message is that going to send them? Everyone here is my family too...but...Elena...â she trailed off. She clenched her jaw. The thought of her sister out there alone hurt Samantha. The truth was she didnât know what to do. Her allegiance was to their people, to protecting them. They had so many people who relied on them, and she felt selfish for wanting to go out and find her family. She had talked a lot of their members out of looking for Logan. To go out and look for her sister would cause her to be a hypocrite.Â
âElena is my sister...yeah we werenât the best sisters, but I need to know what happened,â she admitted. She was talking in circles. âEthan,â she looked at him, âwould they forgive me?â she asked.
