I personally have been drawn to female roles who are incredibly strong; females who are dominant and know their own mind; who are feisty in their own way without being annoying. I like it when she has a dark side, but she also has a playful side.
JAMMF: How to Reject Toxic Masculinity
āToxic masculinity is the constellation of socially regressive male traits that serve to foster domination, the devaluation of women, homophobia, and wanton violence.āĀ Ā ~Ā Terry Kupers ~
āāā
While JAMMF performs patriarchy and historically situated toxic masculinity from time to time, he also subverts such performative expectations through vulnerable masculinity. He does the necessary emotional and intellectual work. He is in tune with his feelings (and Claireās); he dwells in fear, weakness, and sadness but none of these traits reduces the warrior spirit in him. Above all, he exhibits the sensitivity chip that seems to be missing in normative portrayals of men on television.Ā
Yet, the marketing of JAMMF is reduced to a simplistic conception of masculinity - āKing of Menā - and the marketing of Outlander in general is restricted to predetermined gender ideals (occasionally, weāll see praises for Claireās standing as a healer and doctor but in general it is the actress herself who has to promote Claire as owning her positionality and power).
He is also an honorable man and one who is deeply committed to his faith. We donāt see much of the honorable side of him in S3 or his faith.Ā
JAMMFās care, compassion, and tenderness for Claire, as well as those around him and under his protection makes him such a compelling character. Reducing him to a one dimensional (masculine) figure is giving into ideas of masculinity staunchly engraved in our society and doing disservice to need to cultivate non-gender binary ideals, particularly considering the role and influence of mass media in our society.Ā

rude messages on anon mean absolutely nothing. youāre hiding yourself because deep down you know itās wrong and youāre ashamed of what youāre saying. hostile words mean nothing when you cover yourself. they carry no weight.
Jamie: Let's get married.
Claire: What was that, Mr. McTavish?
Jamie: What?
Claire: You said something. I didn't hear what you said.
Jamie: I didn't- No, you said- you said something.
Claire: No...
Jamie: Okay.

The Journey of Claire || Ep. 1x01, Part 5
This is my favorite scene in episode 1x01. There are so many emotions flowing between them. Claire was in Jamieās custody, but she also became his healer and his caretaker in the process. She truly cared for him and did all she could to attend his wound, not because sheās afraid of him, but is to serve the call of being a healer. In this scene, the power in their relationship shifted a bit. Sheās the one to give him a hand, to care and to support him, and he just followed her lead and enjoyed her attending without any questions.
Claire enjoyed this dynamic too. She still wanted to escape from all of them very much, but Jamieās sincere appreciation and respect might just won a tiny part of her heart. Sheās a bit taken aback when heās thanking her and got flustered.
Months later when they were in Lallybroch confessing love to each other, Jamie told her: āā¦I wanted you more than I ever wanted anything in my life, right from that moment I fell off the horse and woke up in the dark looking up at your face.ā What Jamie saw at that moment? A woman with intelligence and a temper, a person with knowledge and a kind heart, and a partner who could be trusted and would give him a steady hand to help him stand up again when he fell over.
tbh a lot of menās āanger issuesā exist simply bc they can get away with it and just arenāt told to curb their emotions in the same way that girls and women do, especially women and girls of color. the right to be angry is a privilege that often goes underlooked, itās very telling the types of people who are socially allowed to be angry and those who are not

saoirse, asked about a man: yeah i think a platonic relationship with him would be great! heās a great performer, i can imagine a friendship with him. corresponding through emails would be even better, thereās no need to see each other face to face-
Haven't stopped laughing about this in two days. I love her.
