'A Book of Words' Sketchbook 

Over the last few weeks or so, i've been working on a sketchbook that i've entitled 'A Book of Words'.

It's nothing special, but the idea behind the sketchbook is to simply record any type ideas that I may have, with the intention that, once full, I'll have a personal reference of typographic styles to look back on for inspiration. 

However, as it stands (only 8 pages in mind you), the sketchbook has become more of a visual diary of typography that i've seen and liked each day, which i've then recreated and experimented with. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as i'm still collecting various styles of type to reference, and also, it means the things found in my 'Likes' on Tumblr and Instagram aren't hidden away.

However, as my sketchbook develops, I'd like it to become more personal, with more of my own ideas in. I've also found that, due to the monotone colour scheme that i've opted for (which suits the sketchbook OCD in me and keeps everything looking uniform), and designs that I'd looked at during a previous project, I seem to be focusing on a lot of glitchy or digitally distorted styles of type, which I don't mind, but I hope that, as the sketchbook goes on, I'll start to look at more styles of type. I'll continue to scan some more pages and post them up here. I'll also put a 'A Book of Words' - Sketchbook tab on the side of my blog, or alternative, just search the tag #abookofwords .

It's a Shape Christmas So yesterday, I submitted my final design to It's a Shape Christmas , which is a digital advent calendar, that shows a shape based christmas design, each created by individual creatives, everyday on the run up to christmas.

The project, which is run in collaboration with Made By Shape, allows users to download each design for their devices, as well as offer donations to Manchester based charity, The Wood Street Mission, who help poor children and families during the festive period.

The Project goes live in just 2 days, so to get involved and donate to a great cause, make sure you visit the Shape Christmas Website or any of links listed below.

Branding focus group session at Creative Spark On Friday morning, a small group of us took part in a branding focus group down at Creative Spark in Manchester. As the session began we were told about the brief that Creative Spark had been given and which we would be discussing. The brief in question was given to them by a the high street pawn store Cash Generator, with the aim of rebranding the company I'm order to appeal to a younger, more youthful audience. After we had been told about the brief we were then asked to discuss our thoughts about Cash Generator as a brand as well as their competitors within the market. As we were the intended audience for the rebrand, these thoughts provided James, who was running both the session and the project, with the information that would help back up his ideas for the rebrand. After this we then began to look at the logo ideas that Creative Spark had worked on for the rebrand, again we then give our thoughts and opinions to each of the designs by writing on the logos that were posted around the room. We also did this for potential colour schemes, before coming together and discussing our thoughts as a group, much like we would when giving a group critique in uni. After this we ended the session by rating what we felt were the top three logo and colour scheme ideas, which again provided James with our thoughts as the intended target audience. Overall, I am very pleased that I attended this focus group, because although this is something that we do at uni, its interesting to see how it's done by a successful design agency for a live brief. It's also interesting to see the kind of briefs that design agencies are given to them. Altogether I've learnt a lot of valuable points from this session that I can take away and use within my own projects in order to improve their final outcomes. I would definitely recommend taking part in a branding focus group such as this one, which I would happily take part in again.

Typographic brief for the music dept

After our talk by David Bailey last Thursday, myself and Lee popped down to the Adelphi basement to see the proposed space for the music department mural.

As mentioned, one thing that I took away from the talk by David Bailey was about how he interacts with and used the environment around his murals to benefit them, so the aim of this visit was not only to get a sense of the space we would be painting, but how we too can use the space to benefit our designs.

So after having a look around, there were a few features, like vents and doors that maybe the illustrators could consider using directly, however in my case, I think I need to consider how features like this could effect how my type could be laid out and displayed. For example, my design could run underneath notice boards and up walls or spiral around vents or doorways etc.

Within this vast spaces, there’s also a lot of turns as you come along the corridor from the stairs, so the position of the designs could effect the order in which they are read or viewed, which could be a good point to consider.

However, as well as all these features throughout the basement, there is also a lot of simple, big flat bits of walls perfect for big and bold type (and illustration) designs, so it’s the best of both worlds.

Overall, it’s a big bit of space with plenty of possibilities, so now that I have an idea of the space and the quotes I want to use, I can now start to draw up my design ideas, which I’ll start to post up this week.

David Bailey Talk

Last week we were lucky enough to be given a talk by Manchester based illustrator, David Bailey, who came in to discuss his mural work with us.

During his discussion, David talked us through a handful of his mural projects, were we looked at the briefs and the process and techniques in which he used to tackle them.

One project that David discussed at great length was a recent project that he had done earlier this year for a London based investment firm called Tyndaris, we’re he painted an impressive white on black mural across the companies bathroom and kitchen, which took David a total of 16 days.

Within the bathroom, like with most of David’s work, the mural invites people to interact with it by suggesting that each toilet cubicle will offer a better experience than the other, which in theory, means the person has options to choose from.

David’s murals interact with the audience a lot of the time through the words that he paints, which provide people with stories to follow or jokes or little quotes to read.

As well as this, one thing I took away from the away from David’s talk was that, his murals aren’t just about his illustrations on a wall, he interacts with and involves the environment around his murals in order to benefit them, which is seen a lot within his Tyndaris project.

Another thing that I took away from David’s talk was how the scale drawing that he produced, for both the Font and Tyndaris project, helped to clearly and effectively show and pitch his ideas for the murals.

Overall, I found the talk by David to be very helpful and inspiring, but most importantly, the talk has given me a lot to consider and think about in terms of the music dept type brief.

Typographic brief for the music dept

I've been looking at potential quotes that I could use for the focus of my type designs, and I've found about 8-10 strong quotes that I'm going to draw designs up for, which, even though we're only presenting 2 ideas, will give me more options.

So in terms of the quotes, I've opted for ones that I feel can be effectively represented through how I illustrate them. For example, I have a quote that uses the word chaotic within it, so I plan for that word to be represented by a 'chaotic' typeface.

The majority of the quotes that I've chosen to work on are based directly on, or can be tied back to, Salford in some way or form. For example, the majority of my quotes are based around Joy Division and Tony Wilson and that era of music, which I feel is one of the most iconic eras in The history of Manchester and it's music. However, although we associate that era with Manchester, a lot of bands and important people around at the time were from salford and that's how my quotes tie back to salford. I also want my quotes to kind of say "it wasn't just manchester, it was salford", which I think is important for this project. What I also think is important is that, several of my quotes, I feel, would work nicely in a recording studio/music dept environment, as they are quotes that a based around Martin Hannett and the recording of Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures.

Overall, I'm happy with the quotes that I have chosen. I feel that they're probably far away from enough that they'll stand out and no one else will have them, but they tie directly back to Salford. I also feel that these quotes will give me some really nice typographic outcomes, now I just need to get drawing.

DRAW CRAWL Last week, despite not being much of a drawer, I took part in the very first Draw Crawl. The event took place across 3 pubs, starting at The Eagle in ‘the oldest part of Salford’, before moving over to The Castle and Gullivers within Manchester’s Northern Quarter. Despite being a bit of a learning curve, the day was really good.

Initially, I’d always planned to draw type inspired by the pub, but on the day, with time and everything, I just drew a letter from each pubs signage. The E and the G are both taken from The Eagle and Gullivers sign, whilst the C, whilst resembling a disco ball, is inspired by the mosaic within the pubs entrance. Overall though, I’d definitely take part again and the days outcomes have inspired my own little aim. Starting tomorrow, I plan on drawing a letter a day, inspired by things that I’ve seen or done within that day. This will get me back into the swing of drawing and experimenting with hand drawn type. This will also help me build up a range of sketches that I may later build a full typeface from.

Roadhouse Rebrand - Final Logo I hate to jump straight to the end, but as this project was set to be completed in just under 2 weeks, i've not really had much chance to post about this brief. However, I've been working heavily within my sketchbook as usual, so i'll try to post some of my development work up at some point. So for this brief, we were asked to create a brand new logo and brand identity for the Roadhouse, in celebration of their 20th year as one of Manchester's most iconic music venue. The idea for the final logo that I presented, which you can see here, was based on the simple fact that the Roadhouse is a basement club, and is in fact advertised as 'one of Manchester's best basement venues'. So with this in mind, I thought that it may be a nice idea to try and simply incorporate stairs into my logo design. As you'll see later on within my development work, this was just one of several ideas for my final logo, however, after i'd developed it, I felt that this one of my stronger logo ideas. Overall, i'm very pleased with this logo design, considering the time in which it had to be complete. I feel that it's a strong logo that could work well across the entire Roadhouse Brand, without ever ageing.  Most importantly though, I feel that this logos simple and modern approach will help to push the Roadhouse into a new era of it's life, helping to introduce new customers and new opportunities for the venue. So there is my final logo for the Roadhouse Project. As mentioned, i'll try to post some of my sketchbook and development work up, along with my final branding boards.
