The void

That’s actually the place where your body and mind are trying to tell you something

Your engine light turning on if you will

Listen to it

Oh God I know it can be frightening and sometimes agony inducing but

I pray that you meet it and listen to it

Instead of running away or trying to silence it with

Another fling, or another person who can’t face theirs.

I pray that it whispers the thing you need to hear

I pray you make it out of this, well and healthy.

I pray to be

The one who sits with the void .

Demonization of the body is a flawed social construction. You may as yet be unable to come to terms with the consequences of your flesh, but resist destruction. The body is an essential tool.

Be cognizant of how the body occupies space.Take conscious measures to orient your body and therefore your mind toward unconventional or unusual perspectives. Sharpen the sense of creativity at every opportunity.

Be perceptive of the memory that resides in the body, as well as open to new and challenging explorations. Experience reflectively; don’t repress or dampen what you could otherwise feel strongly and gain insight from.

Interact without limit with the environment in which you find yourself and the occupants therein. Relationships worth analyzing reside in the relationship of your body to other bodies, your body to architecture, your body to nature, and so on.

Never hold back in terms of creative energy and enthusiasm, but avoid unnecessary cluttering.

Don’t seek out the Big Ideas. Have multiple answers for your questions; not multiple questions to validate one overarching answer.

Embrace the freedom, forgiveness, and lesson learning that can be found in mistakes and failure. There is no one prescribed way to solve a problem, and experimentation is essential to growth.

Avoid forcing completion on an idea for the sake of a finished product. Instead, be receptive of the changes required in the life of a piece and execute meaningfully. In a similar vein, don’t fear the incomplete. Start over as many times as necessary, and analyze the string of decisions regularly.

Savor the honesty that can be found in silence.

2013 As I was writing this statement, I would brainstorm by scribbling thoughts and ideas on my body, and then using clear packaging tape to lift the writing as well as pieces of my skin from the source to a piece of found glass. When the thoughts were more concrete, I used a marker and went through a similar process; this time the words did not fade into the background of amassed words and skin, but stood out with strong contrast.
