TAGGING → Rachel Evans & Sam Evans LOCATION → At the hospital TIME FRAME → Sunday, July 12, 2016 GENERAL NOTES → Two-shot
Rachel breathed in and out like the nurse was instructing her, but honestly, she was still in as much pain as ever. She’d been in labor for six hours now. Sam had been with her the entire time and while deep, deep down, she was grateful for the support, all she could do was glare at him. After all, he was the one who’d gotten her pregnant. She’d read somewhere that first-time mom’s could be in labor for up to eighteen hours. She hoped that she was not one of those mom’s, not that she thought that her daughter was not worth going through eighteen hours of labor for of course.
Another hour passed and much to her relief, she was finally instructed to push. “Push, Mrs. Evans,” her obstetrician urged. Rachel growled. “I am pushing!” she exclaimed, although she tried to push a little harder. The pain was excruciating now. The epidural she was given was not working. Another hour passed before she heard her daughter cry. Exhausted, Rachel collapsed onto the hospital bed. She felt like she was on the verge of blacking out and she must have because the next time she opened her eyes, Sam was sitting in a chair next to her hospital bed, Xander sitting on his lap.
"Where’s…?" she started, trailing off when a nurse walked in with her daughter in her arms. Rachel smiled, accepting the bundle of joy. "She’s hungry," the nurse told her, and she nodded her head at her in acknowledgement. Rachel would feed her soon. She wanted her to meet everyone first. Family and friends were huddled outside the hospital room right now eager to meet the little one, she was sure. Rachel looked at her husband and commented, "She’s beautiful." Later, surrounded by loved ones, Rachel felt like the luckiest woman in the world. She was sure that Luke was right there with them too. Welcome to the family, Lucy Evans.
Sam bit down on his lip as he watched Rachel. He hated seeing her in pain. He glanced up at the clock, six hours. It had already been six hours of labor. He had dropped everything when he had gotten the call from Rachel, and dropping everything meant running up the stairs from the home studio. His heart was beating fast in his chest, and he could tell that Rachel wasn't his biggest fan right now with the way she was looking at him. He prayed that it wouldn't be too long until they could hold their daughter.
The time passed, Sam didn't know how long it had been, he tried his best to calm Rachel down, well to keep her calm and encouraging her. He dried the sweat of her face, offered her his hand. A small part prayed that she wouldn't break his hand when she squeezed it, but it would be worth it. He couldn't wait to see their daughter. There was a big smile on his face, when he saw and heard their daughter cry for the first time. At first he had been scared about how Xander would react to finding out that they were going to have a baby, and he would get a baby sister. Xander had been amazing, and he was looking forward to become a big brother. When their daughter was born, Sam went outside to the waiting room to grab Xander. Sam thanked his sister for showing up, it was a good thing having her close today, Stacey had decided to go to college in New York.
Sam sat with Xander in his lap, waiting for Rachel to wake up. He was about to answer Rachel's question when a nurse walked into their room, holding their daughter. He saw the smile on Xander's face as he climbed out of his lap, walking over to Rachel, and Sam followed close behind. Sam nodded his head, "Yeah, she is," he breathed out, and he watched how Xander looked at her, "She's so small," he said, Sam nodded his head, "She is but she'll get bigger," he laughed a little, "and that's your sister," Sam said smiling, pressing a gentle kiss against the top of Xander's head, "your sister Lucy Evans." A breath escaped his lips, this was it. Sam had never been happier in his life, this was his family, Rachel, Xander and Lucy, and they were all perfect.

"I think so, yes," Rachel somehow managed to respond, her heart beating rapidly against her rib cage. Seeing the big grin on his face made her smile. Slowly, she started to accept her pregnancy as reality and she became giddy, squealing in delight as Sam pulled her close to him and wrapped his arms around her waist. She looped her arms around his neck in response, kissing him when he finally loosened his hold on her a little. "We’re going to have a baby!" she exclaimed, beaming at her husband. "I’ll make an appointment with Dr. Hart in the afternoon."
Sam smiled when he heard Rachel's answer. Today was probably the best day in his life so far. Sure his wedding day with Rachel was great, but they had finally signed the papers and gotten to bring Xander home, and Rachel found out that she was pregnant. Well, hopefully pregnant. Sam was sure that there wasn't any day that he been better than this. He smiled into the kiss, his arms still wrapped around her waist. "yeah," he breathed out, "a baby," he licked his lips. "And I'm coming with." Sam couldn't wait to hear the doctor tell them that she was pregnant.

Normally, she would give him a speech about how bugs and spiders could kill her, but right now, his words barely registered with her. She was still in a state of shock, unable to believe what she had seen. She was pregnant? She was finally pregnant again? Her eyes started to water. Rachel shook her head at her unsuspecting husband, unable to answer him with words. Instead, she pointed to the pregnancy stick she’d left on top of the toilet. She watched him carefully, waiting for his reaction with bated breath. Until Sam confirmed what she saw, she would not allow herself to celebrate, to accept her pregnancy as reality.
He was surprised with the fact that Rachel's normal speech didn't come. Sam had heard the speech more than once, and it was something about hearing it, and Sam just smiled at her, when she gave it, before giving her a kiss and killing or removing whatever it was that had made her scream. Sam nodded his head, and he looked where Rachel was pointing. He grabbed the pregnancy test, he looked down at it, he blinked a few times, he wasn't sure what it meant, but he was pretty sure that a plus sign meant that she was pregnant. "You're pregnant?" Sam breathed out, and turned to face Rachel, a big smile on his face, he wrapped is arms around her waist pulling her closer, giving her a tight hug, he couldn't believe that Rachel was pregnant they had been trying for so long.

Rachel nodded her head at him in agreement. “I say yes,” she responded, leading him to the bedroom. Once they were inside, she got ready for bed. At some point during her nighttime routine, she received a reminder on her cell phone that she had a meeting with her accountant tomorrow morning at Fairytale Cupcakes. While she double-checked the appointment on her calender (just to be sure!), a red X captured her attention. Rachel had always made a habit of keeping track of her visits from Aunt Flo. How had she not noticed that she was two and a half weeks late? She’d been late before, so she did not allow herself to get her hopes up, but she got a pregnancy test from the medicine cabinet as had become routine. Several minutes later, the results were in. Her breath caught in her throat when she saw the pink “+” sign. “Sam?” she squeaked.
Sam slipped out of his clothes, and grabbed a pair of pajama bottoms, it was probably for the best, since he had no idea on how Xander would react sleeping in his bed. It was his first night and he didn't want to risk having Xander walk in on him half naked. Sam sat down on the bed, waiting for Rachel to come out from the bathroom, so he could go inside and wash up and brush his teeth. A small laugh left his lips when he heard Rachel's squeak, he had no idea on what it was this, probably some small spider or bug that he would have to kill. Sam walked over to the bathroom smiling a little, "So where is it?" he asked looking around he couldn't really see anything, "And I've told you the bugs and spiders won't kill you." He walked over to her placing his hands on her shoulders looking at her, "So tell me where it is and i'll take care of it."

Rachel flitted her eyes between her son and the book as Sam read the story. The Paper Bag Princess was one of her favorite children’s books. She hoped that Xander would like the book too. Her eyes lingered on him. Well, he seemed to anyway. Rachel looked away from him when Sam handed her the book. She started to read, making her voice more animated than usual. Her dads had done the same thing reading books to her as a child. Sometimes, they’d acted out the stories. It had always brought the story to life for her. After awhile, she handed the book back to her husband, expecting him to finish it off. She brushed Xander’s hair back as his eyes began to flutter and his smile began to droop. Sleep was taking over, which Rachel was relieved about. By the time Sam finished reading the story, Xander was asleep. Rachel whispered a goodnight and then followed her husband out of the room.
Sam smiled when he saw that Xander was falling asleep. From what Sam had been able to tell his son had liked the book, maybe next time he could go for a Dr. Seuss one, Sam had always loved them as a kid and he memorized a lot of them, and Sam was proud of himself for being able to ready the book without getting caught up with the words, reading out loud was something that he had hated when he was in school. He slipped out of the bed, waiting for Rachel to join him, he turned around and smiled a little at Xander, and he whispered a goodnight. A small breath left his lips and he wrapped his arms around Rachel, "Today was good," he whispered smiling a little, "what do you say about heading to bed," Sam said and smiled at, "I can't wait for tomorrow."

Rachel was not actually upset with them for making a mess of course. If she were though, Sam’s kiss would have mollified her. She looked expectantly at Xander, laughing softly when he shook his head in response to Sam’s question. “It’s okay to be a troublemaker sometimes,” she told him before she splashed him with some soapy water. Xander squealed, having been caught off-guard. The more they played, the messier the bathroom got. Finally, bathtime came to an end, much to everyone’s disappointment. While Sam got Xander ready for bed, Rachel cleaned up the bathroom. They finished at around the same time, just in time to tuck their son in and read him a bedtime story.
Having been with Rachel as long as he had, he knew that she wasn't actually mad at them, if she was she would have made it known. It was a nice time sitting like this with both Rachel and Xander, and somehow they were all bonding together over Xander's bubble bath. It was almost sad when it came to an end, but Sam knew that it would be other days too. Sam grabbed a towel and he dried Xander off before they walked to his bedroom, getting Xander ready for bed. It was a small relief that Xander didn't complain about having to put on his pyjamas. Sam helped him into bed and he as sitting under the covers waiting for Rachel to come and join them. Sam smiled a little, when Rachel walked inside and they made sure to tuck him in and Sam grabbed a book that they could read. Sam sat down and began reading and after awhile he handed it over to Rachel.

Rachel made quick work of cleaning up the kitchen, but instead of going upstairs right away, she lingered. She wanted Sam to have some more time to bond with his son one on one. When she thought that enough time had passed, she headed upstairs to see how they were getting along. They certainly sounded like they were having fun. Rachel only hoped that the bathroom was not a mess. She knocked on the bathroom door before she stepped inside. “Oh my goodness,” she commented as she entered. “Sam, I think you might have put in a little too much bubble solution.” She was not upset though. In fact, she was amused. “Troublemakers! Both of you!” she exclaimed, joining her husband at the edge of the bathtub.
Sam just grinned when he heard Rachel, "you need a lot of bubbles," Sam explained shaking his head, looking at Xander. "I promise, I am right," he nodded his head, "but Rachel don't think so," Sam shook his head. "You need a lot of bubbles right?" Sam asked, and Xander nodded his head, with a small smile, "Yes, bubbles," he agreed, it almost looked like Xander was relieved that Sam had spoken first. It had been nice spending some time alone with Xander to bond with him. "And we're not troublemakers," Sam said and he leaned closer to Rachel placing a gentle kiss on her check. "Are we?" Sam asked looking at Xander who was playing in his bath.

Dinner went very well, Rachel thought. Xander had had a second slice of pizza, which was a very good sign since he’d never had much of an appetite when Sam and her had shared a meal with him before. She looked at her son when she heard Sam’s question. Xander looked kind of tired. “How about a bubble bath and then a bedtime story?” she suggested. She was sure that Xander would enjoy that. He nodded his head at her. “Okay,” he responded, and Rachel swore his lips curved up into the tiniest of smiles. “Great,” she said, addressing her husband afterwards, “You get his bubble bath going and I’ll clean up down here.” She shooed them off, refusing any help from them.
Sam nodded his head. He could do that. He could get a bubble bath going. He knew that from the way that Rachel had shooed them off he knew better than offering her any help, he could tell that Xander wanted to help, but Sam shook his head letting Xander get in front of him. Sam began to poke Xander's side with his fingers as they walked upstairs to the bathroom, Sam smiled as he heard Xander laugh even if to was for just a second. A small breath left his lips, as he walked inside the bathroom and got the bath going. "I know I'm supposed to tell you this," Sam said as he made sure that it was enough bubbles and that the water wasn't too hot, "but don't splash the water too much, but play as much as you want," Sam said and smiled a little, "You can get undressed and get in." He nodded his head smiling at Xander, waiting for him to get ready and climb into the water. Xander got in the bath and Sam looked at him, "let me know if the water is to hot okay?" Sam asked and Xander nodded his head.

Rachel was cutting the pizza into slices when she heard them coming downstairs. “Remember to wash your hands!” she called out, putting a slice on each plate. She served the fries afterwards, looking up when she heard them come into the kitchen. “Thanks,” she responded, smiling at the compliment. Her smile grew when Xander nodded his head in agreement. As long as he was pleased, she was pleased. She poured a glass of iced tea for everyone before she sat down at the kitchen table as well. She looked at her son. “Go on,” she urged him. “Dig in.” She was eager to know what he thought of her cooking skills. Kids never lied about that sort of thing. Rachel breathed a sigh of relief when Xander told her that he loved the pizza. She shared a look with her husband. Yay!
Sam smiled when he heard Xander say that he loved the food. It was something that Sam never thought he would feel, relief when their son said he loved the food. Sam finished his own food, and the drink too. A gentle laugh left his lips when Xander reached for another slice of pizza, and Sam looked at Rachel with a big smile on his face. "I think I'm gonna have another one too," he said as he grabbed another piece. "Because this was kinda great." Sam took a bit of it, and he glanced over at Xander every now and then, and he was eating the pizza and fries. He wasn't saying much but at least the kid was eating, and it wasn't just to be nice, Xander was really enjoying the food. Sam bit down on his lip, "So what should we do after we've finished eating?" he asked, and looked between Rachel and Xander, hoping that Xander would let them know what he wanted to do.

Rachel smiled when she heard that he’d liked the movie. Things were off to a good start. She looked at her husband in amusement afterwards. “Well, not always,” she corrected him. “But tonight? Absolutely!” After all, she doubted that Xander was ever going to want to eat broccoli, but he would have to. “You two hang out,” she said. “I will let you know when dinner’s ready.” She headed downstairs and into the kitchen. She’d made the pizza earlier. She just had to put it into the oven. Before she did, Rachel sprinkled even more cheese on top just to be sure that the pizza would be cheesy enough. She put a tray of fries in as well. She set the table while she waited for the pizza to finish cooking. Half an hour later, she called to them upstairs, “Dinner’s ready!”
Sam laughed a little, and he hoped that Xander would to, when he saw that Sam was laughing. "I'm almost sure she'll make your favorites this week," Sam said and nodded his head a little, "and then maybe once a week." Sam was almost sure that they were going to make a lot of Xander's favorite things at least at first to make sure he felt like home in their house. Sam got of the bed waiting for Xander to do the same so that they could look around in the room, and for Xander to see what they had gotten for him. "You can take out things, or play with them," Sam said and waited for Xander to see if he found something he liked. "We got like cars, and LEGO," Sam said pushing his lips together, "and Ninja Turtles," Sam reached for a couple of turtles, and he handed one of them to Xander, so that they could play a little before dinner. "Pizza!" Sam said looking at Xander, "but before we eat we need to wash our hands," Sam said and waited for Xander to follow him out from his room. "The bathroom is over there," Sam pointed, and walked with him, the walked downstairs after they had washed their hands, it was in that moment that Sam realized that Xander hadn't brough his backpack with him, it was still in his room. Sam took a seat at the table and Xander did the same, and Sam waited for Rachel to do the same. "This smells great," Sam said smiling.
November 17, 2014 | Rachel & Sam
Rachel looked over at her husband, thoughts of family filling her mind. She smiled when he mouthed an ‘I love you’ to her, quick to return the sentiment. She watched Xander watch the movie for awhile. When she was sure that he was enjoying himself, she got comfortable too, redirecting her attention to the movie. After the movie, she was going to have to start making dinner. Sam could keep Xander company while she did that. Home-made pizza and fries. That ought to make him happy. She remembered him telling her that those were his favorite foods. Rachel let out a yawn as the movie ended, getting up from the bed to stretch. “Did you like the movie?” she asked her son.
Sam smiled, this was their first moment as a family, at least the first moment as a family in their home. Sam couldn't be happier. This was all that he had dreamed off for the last couple of years. The waited had been worth it. He could see how Xander was nodding his head, "yes, I liked it," he replied looking around. Sam smiled a little, "I think it's time for food," he said laughing a little. "And you should know that Rachel makes the best food ever, and she always makes what you want," Sam said. He wasn't sure on what to call Rachel, he knew that both of them were Xander's parents, but he wasn't sure if Xander was ready to call them mom and dad. "I'm sure she'll make you your favorite, it's pizza right?" Sam asked smiling, "with extra cheese right?" Sam asked, and he saw Xander nodding his head.
November 17, 2014 | Rachel & Sam
Rachel knew that Sam could tell that she was worried, which was why she quickly pushed her worries aside for now. She did not want to ruin today. It was supposed to be one to remember after all. Rachel snorted when Sam told Xander that he had never seen Cars before. He’d seen that movie more than a few times, she was sure. “You’ll like Cars,” she agreed with her husband, getting up from the bed. “How about we watch the movie in here? We’re already comfortable here.” Xander looked like he needed a break from making decisions. She popped the movie into the DVD player and then joined them on the bed again. She noticed that Xander’s backpack was no longer within his reach, which she considered a good sign. He wanted to be here.
Sam smiled when he heard Rachel's suggestion. He would have suggested it himself, but he also wanted Xander to feel like he was the one that got to decide. Sam had moved up to the bed of the bed, and Xander had joined him, the boy was playing a little with his fingers, while he waited for Rachel to join them. Sam smiled a little as the movie began, and he glanced over at Rachel. This felt like they were a family, all cuddled up together in Xander's bed watching a movie. He followed Rachel's eyes, and he saw what she was seeing, the bag was at the foot of the bed, and Xander couldn't really reach it. Sam smiled, maybe Xander would feel like this was home. Sam looked over at Rachel, and he mouthed I love you to her.
November 17, 2014 | Rachel & Sam
Rachel was all for being yourself, but she was worried that Xander might not be able to handle the bullying. She barely could when she’d been in school. It was his first day with them and she was already worrying. Oh, boy. She took a breath, forcing herself to relax. Baby steps. “Sure,” Rachel responded, giving him a warm smile. “Let me get you a few movies to choose from.” She walked over to the shelf in the corner and picked a couple of movies at random. “Let’s see,” she said as she returned to the bed. “We have…” She trailed off as she sat down. “…Finding Nemo, The Lion King, Aladdin, or Cars,” she finished, holding up each DVD as she read the titles. “Your pick.”
Sam wasn't sure on what the look on Rachel's face was. Sure he had seen her worried before, but he didn't know why she would be worrying right now, this was supposed to be a happy day. They had their son in their lives now. Sam sat with Xander waiting for Rachel to come back with a couple of movies. "Um..:" Xander was pushing his lips together, "that one," he said and pointed at Cars, "I think I want to see that one." He looked at Rachel, through his eyelashes. "I haven't seen that." Sam smiled a little. "Cars it is, and it's really good, I think you'll like it," Sam said with a big smile. "We can watch it in here, or the living room," he said the smile still present on his face, "You can pick where you want to watch it."

Rachel raised an eyebrow at them in response. “Guy stuff, huh?” she echoed, smiling when Xander nodded his head at her. She looked at Sam afterwards. “Teach him when not to use Klingon and Na’vi too please,” she said, sure that her husband intended on teaching Xander those languages. For example, Rachel did not want a note from a teacher about “classroom disruption”. She handed Xander a glass of milk, letting him choose a chocolate chip cookie for himself. “So what would you like to do?” she asked him, making suggestions afterwards, “We could watch a movie, play with your toys, go for a walk…”
Sam nodded his head, and as he did he could see Xander nodding his head too. "I'm sure that he will know when to use the languages and not to use them," Sam replied laughing a little. Sam saw a small smile on Xander's face. "And besides that there are no wrong time to use those languages, it's not our fault that people don't understand how important it is to know more than one language." Sam shook his head and reached for a glass of milk for himself giving Rachel a small smile. He waited for Xander to take a cookie, Sam watched how Xander began to nibble on it, shrugging his shoulders a little, not sure on what he wanted to do. Sam smiled a little encouraging Xander to pick something. "Maybe," Xander began looking down, "watch a movie?" It sounded a lot like a question.
November 17, 2014 | Rachel & Sam
Rachel followed Sam and Xander upstairs. She held her breath, afraid that he might not like his bedroom. “Yes,” she echoed Sam’s sentiment. “We can change anything you like.” Xander shook his head at them, his lips curving up into a smile. “Thanks,” he said, looking around. Rachel was relieved that he liked his bedroom. Sam and her had spent months putting the room together. “You two hang out,” she said, excusing herself. “I’ll bring up some milk and chocolate chip cookies.”
Ten minutes later, she had everything on a tray. She was careful not to drop the tray on her way upstairs. As she walked into the room, she was glad to see that Xander looked much more relaxed. It would take him awhile to see their home as his home and for him to see them as his parents, she knew, but that day would come. They just needed to be patient. A little patience and love and everything would turn out okay. “What are you two talking about?” she wondered as she set the tray down on the bed.
Sam smiled a little. Happy that Xander seemed to be happy about the room. It had taken them a few months to put it all together, and right now it was all worth it, and hopefully Xander would feel like home in both this room and the house. Sam noticed how the boy was holding on to the bag, maybe not as much as he had at first. Sam smiled a little and looked at Xander. "I really hope you like cookies, because Rachel knows how to bake, and they're awesome," Sam nodded his head making sure that his point came across.
He sat down on the bed next to Xander, "I don't know if you know this," Sam said and smiled a little, "but there is this TV character from one of my favorite shows who's name is Xander, and I'm sure that you'll be just as great as he was." Sam smiled a little, "Really?" Xander asked and looked over at him, Sam nodded his head. "Yeah," Sam replied, "and I'm gonna teach you everything I know about comic books, and maybe even start to teach you Na'vi and Klingon," he held up a finger against his lips, "but don't tell Rachel, she doesn't know those language, and if we both know them we can plan things and keep secrets from her." Sam laughed a little, and Xander had a small smile on his lips. "Oh, nothing," Sam replied smiling, giving Xander a small wink, "just guy stuff and I told him how I was going to teach him everything about comic books."
November 17, 2014 | Rachel & Sam
Rachel shared Sam’s smile. “Let’s go home,” she said, looking down at Xander, who nodded without looking up from his shoes. Baby steps. They walked out to the car together hand-in-hand. He was small for his age so he still needed a booster seat. Once Rachel had him all buckled in, she got into the passenger’s seat, waiting for Sam to get in as well. They played a few games like “I Spy” along the way, which seemed to calm Xander’s nerves. Honestly, they kind of calmed hers too. They arrived at the house soon enough. Rachel went to open the door, letting Sam get Xander. The moment they were all inside the house, Rachel truly let herself relax. She was not dreaming. Things were finally coming together for her and Sam. “Would you like to see your bedroom?” she asked him. She would have suggested a full tour, but she did not want to overwhelm him.
Sam smiled a little, and he waited for Rachel to make sure that Xander was into his seat, and that he was buckled up. He got into the driving seat, and he started the car. He would have played some of the games a bit more than he did but he the last thing he wanted was for them to get into some kind accident. The ride to their house and hearing the games being played calmed him down. Sam was sure that the same thing was happening to both Rachel and Xander. Sam got Xander out of the car, and held on to his hand as they walked inside of the house. Sam smiled a little, when he saw how Xander was looking around a little, not sure on what he should say. There was a small nod of his head followed, by "yes, please," Sam smiled a little he looked at Rachel. The three of them walked up the stairs to the room that was going to be Xander's and Sam looked at their son, "If you don't like the color we can change it," Sam said smiling a little.
