I don’t post very much here but I’m posting my Hulk rambles for Brand new Day. Anyways
Yes it is true that literally 99% of the fight was shown in trailers. It’s true that Banner and Hulk weren’t in the movie much (at most Savage appears for like 3 minutes or so within the whole set piece going on)
There is a lot going one on with them in that short time that I was at least satisfied. Was it the best fight for MCU Hulk? Besides like insanely great camera work and etc, especially when Savage Hulk is briefly chasing Peter, I wouldn’t necessarily say it is. That still goes to the 2008 Abomination fight for me, but that said it’s up there at least.
People say that Hulk gets defeated or that his ass gets beaten. No. lol. Peter is flat out running and trying to survive. He’s more trying to calm down and restrain Hulk the entire time. And he actually manages to get through to him at the last second as Hulk has him pinned. And surprisingly enough, the scene is somewhat representative of the Immortal Hulk Great Power One Shot. Not a direct copy but it reminded me heavily of it all things considered. While yes the outcome could be similar to Sam and Red Hulk in Brave new World, it’s something to consider that talking to a rampaging Hulk is better than continuing to fight if possible. Plus there’s way more meaning and thought to it to this movie that just works near perfectly.
By the end, what really breaks me is that it’s Hulk (or Banner briefly controlling/at least Banner and Hulk combined) that realizes silently he nearly killed his newfound friend that’s begging him to remember. He glances at himself in a broken mirror, seeing what he’s become again that’s similar to when he comes to after fighting hulkbuster but arguably worse. And seconds after this, you get a rather tired/defeated yet somewhat accepted look from Hulk as he willingly lets go and falls from the building (i should note that he has various large debris holding him back and the webs are cutting into his skin). How this shot is framed and etc is making it seem like he is essentially trying to kill himself here and save Peter from himself. How he falls in silence just reminded me of 2005 Kong’s death. My heart literally sank seeing that I can’t lie. No one really won in this situation even if Hulk wins in the technical sense. The last we see of Banner is him being put into an ambulance as no one answers to him if he hurt anyone . And then he ends up getting sent to a Psychiatric ward with no one to supposedly visit him and etc… please someone help him I’m begging.
Anyways in short I can see potential in a new Hulk movie coming from what happened here but sadly knowing Marvel, it’s unlikely at this point. I’d love DDC to direct or write him again in more proximity, for what it’s worth I think he did great for what was shown and given considering it’s been stated he’s a fan of the character. Russos are clearly gonna ignore this and etc and then some in Secret Wars I can feel it
- Jean controlling Smart Hulk gave him various mannerisms that reminded me of Joe in some form, so potentially I can see why Grey Hulk was considered to some degree even if it’s not him really
- If anything I think I felt more bad at a hulk out despite waiting for years at this point. While yes he still calls Hulk “the other guy” and the monster inside him, Banner is reduced to a flat out nervous wreck. Banner looks like he’s about to vomit as he’s about to transform with the green veins threatening to appear on his neck. Banner’s voice flat out breaking and contorting/stuttering in fear when he’s telling Peter to leave.

- Hulk’s complete utter confusion at Spidey escaping the Puny God maneuver
- The first time Peter tries to put on the inhibitor on Hulk, Hulk utterly rears back rapidly into walls like a wounded animal as an attempt to not get it on him. mix of anger and maybe fear but you could imply he doesn’t want to be suppressed fully again
