Hey I'm Sam Hall. I'm Climatologist and meteorologist I used to be a professor. My guilty pleasure is watching ghost hunting shows. Played by Holly - over 21
“Tomorrow is International Nacho Day at Paco’s, what do you plan to do about such a momentous occasion?”
“Obviously eat my own weight in Nachos. It would be a travesty not to. I mean if its a international day, it should technically be a holiday where I can watch Lost boys, drink a shit load of beer and follow up the nachos with fajitas and margaritas with a lovely lady.... Ok your go.. what you gonna do?”
The streets were so flat here in L.A. Back in Montana, the roads leading up to her house were rocky and uneven, making travel by skate almost impossible when it came to getting anywhere she wanted to go. This was the exact opposite. Dozens of smooth, crossing streets instead of one long road into town meant there were so many places she could go if she wanted to.
For some reason, though, Mere didn’t go anywhere. She stared at the brand new skates on her feet and shuffled forward and back in place as if restless or undecided, dancing to an inaudible tune.
Sam was walking along listening to a podcast of Natural weather phenomenons. when he stopped next to Meredith. “ You ok?” He asked pulling out his earpods. He looked at her feet and smiled. “ Awesome skates. I haven't been skating in years. I am literally the worst skater ever.” He chuckled. “ I have the co ordination of a dog on wet flooring.” He chuckled. “ But... I can ice skate. Which apparently is a lot harder then skating.”
Clickety clack goes Jackson’s keyboard as he types like a madman to finish his short story before the current round of entries close. By the time he eyes the clock he’s shocked at how sucked in he’s been, not one to have his attention held generally for more than about an hour. He looks up and around the space he’s in, wild eyes and mildly sweaty with anticipation that he might have a winner. His story is one of dramatic tragedy, sprawling danger, a city falling to time, monsters melting out from the shadows, scream queens and the works.
His chest tightens when he realizes he needs someone, lips working like he’s forgotten how to speak entirely. Then, finally, at the nearest person he blurts out –“I’m tryna writin’a short horror story for the Book Nook contest, could use a sensitivity reader if you’re not too much of a scaredy cat!” He teases loud and brash on accident, garnering a few looks from others nearby who were enjoying the peace and quiet. “What,” he offers the onlookers before looking back to his target. “I-I could really use a-a hand.” He says, stuttering only from the sudden attention on him in the room, wishing for less eyes on him.
“Then I am the guy for you.” Sam grinned. “ I love horror and I’m a massive fan of ghost hunting shows so.. Lemme see.” Sam said with a friendly smile and then pulled up a chair. “Ok... where are the ghosts?” He asked with a hint of confusion. “ Or is this a more hitchcock/ stephen King kind of horror?” He asked with a small smile. “ Like are we talking psychological horror or full on shit your pants, fear factor?”
“ I nearly got run over by a lady with a shopping cart today. My life actually flashed before my eyes as she squished me up against the condiments shelfing in the grocery store. Honestly If it hadn’t have been for the store clerk I could have died.” Sam said with a small chuckle. “All I wanted was some hot dog buns and instead I was wedged between ketchup and mustard. Now I know how the hot dogs feel.” He gave a small snort of laughter and sighed. “ Anyway enough about the dramatic turn in my day, how are you?”

Phytoplankton are more than just nature’s watercolors: They’re tiny ocean organisms that play a key role in Earth’s climate by removing heat-trapping carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. These tiny organisms live in the oceans, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, like plants on land. Earth’s oceans absorb about half of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which feeds phytoplankton.
This year, phytoplankton blooms popped up in the panhandle region of Alaska and along the coast of British Columbia slightly later in the year than the main blooms that tend to occur in May.
This image was acquired on July 21, 2018, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on our Terra satellite and shows milky blue waters near Prince of Wales Island. The discoloration is thought to be caused by a bloom of non-toxic phytoplankton known as coccolithophores, specifically Emiliania huxleyi, which like warm, stratified, and low nutrient conditions.
This week, our Export Processes in the Ocean from Remote Sensing (EXPORTS) team is shipping out into the open ocean to study these important organisms, sailing 200 miles west from Seattle into the northeastern Pacific Ocean.
