~ FINAL CRITIQUE + PAINTING AS OBJECT.

For the final project we had to do in this class, we were painting as object. We were given two words to select from, “woven” and “soft” from which we were to ceate an inspired painting. My partner and I decided that we were going to incorporate both of them, as we wanted to use paper and fabric to create our final work. The feeling of the painting we were hoping to capture was a soft atmosphere, that came across as tranquil and dream-like, but also doubled-up as interactive artwork, like the Instagrammable walls we see on social media today.

 We found an old quilt from which we seperated the quilted element, and then took out the insulation. With this we created our “clouds,” and with the use of tens of thumb tacs, created folds in the fabric as we attached it to a panel in the wall which we decided wuild be our “canvas.”

The second element that we added to our work was another “women” element, folded origami-inspired flowers made from magazines. This not only added colour and balance to our final work, but added the surrealism element to it, as some of the flowers were larger than our heads, and were very aesthetically pleasing floating amongst the clouds.

Overall, Nelai and I were both very happy with the final work we put out, and felt that it was a great end to an exceptinally good semester. I learned not only several new painting techniques and styles, but also explored my own unique styles of painting - something that I genuinely hated and was dreading before the semster began. I was happy to look back on and reflecrt on all the work I had put out over the course of the semester, and thrilled to see how my skill and technique had developed, and am looking forward to coninue painting in my own time.

~ INVENTING COLOUR.

As this was a painting where I was to explore warm and cool colour relationships, and inventedT the colour palette, I had to think about what colour scheme I wanted to use. I ultimately decided on using warm colours, as it made the overall image look very graphic, and incorporated a deep blue in areas which I needed to be darkest as a nice point of contrast. As the inspiration behind my work was urban Atlanta, this gave my painting the ultimate feel of a hot summer day in Atlanta, Geogia.

Our trip to the MoMa

Although we lost Romeiro’s phone, and then lost Romeiro twice... it was amazing when we go to see the photo collection! Lucky for me I had been thinking about my senior thesis that morning so it was a good opportunity to kill two birds with one stone :-) I was able to get some sweeeet photos in relation to what I was looking for! It was honestly a perfect chance to see how easy it is to have access to archives that unique and not on the internet! ;)

NYPL FIELD TRIP.

This trip was honestly an entire advenure, which we concluded by getting really good Portugese food at Ricardo’s parents’ restaurant. In the NYPL Photo Archives, I found a lot of inspiration for what I would want my next painting to be, and attached are some of the great images and artworks I was lucky enough to see:

I knew based off the collages that I found that I would want to paint a collage for my final image, but was unsure of what coour scheme to create my work in .

Our trip today was amazing. At first I did not know what to expect from visiting the New York Library because I have never been. When I arrived at the building it seemed like something out of the Christmas movie: Louise or Annie. Although it was a pretty monotone appearance, the structure just felt important. When we entered it was extremely beautiful. The ceilings were high and bronze with bright chandeliers hanging from their center. All of the statues and banisters were laced with Christmas reefs and it felt very tranquil.

When we entered the Picture Collection (room 100) there were rows of folders. The library supervisor explained that the collection head 12,000 subject heads and over half a million photos! These subjects ranged from “performance art” to “abandoned buildings”. I was so excited to get into the folders and see what has been preserved. For my “found” image project (a found image is an image of an image already documented) I wanted to do a college that is true to my culture and my goals. To be spontaneous I look through the folders labeled “water”, “religious art”, and “fairies”. I was not disappointed.

Although each folder contained a variety of pictures that seemed mostly distant in relation, I created stories. And that is what I want my collage to be. I want readers to understand more about who I am through the art. I cannot wait to go to the library again, I literally could spend all day looking through art history.

Richard Prince

Richard Prince was born in 1949 in the Panama Canal Zone. He is known for rephotographing the work of others and appropriating them. By copying, scanning, and manipulating the work of others, he has crafted a technique of provocation.

In 1977, Prince photographed four photographs which previously appeared in the New York Times which would jumpstart his process of rephotographong. His Jokes series (beginning 1986) deals with the sexual fantasies and sexual frustrations of white, middle-class America.

He is controversial because of his tendency to reproduce the work of others which has led him to several lawsuits. His appropriation of others’ photographs has been labeled as reckless and uninformed.

Prince also shows how dependent messages and icons are on the context in which they are presented. When you isolate them their original location, it forces the viewer to scrutinize that which is usually consumed in a quick glance.

In class, we began by discussing several different questions; What constitutes an object/What are its qualities?, What constitutes a painting/What are its qualities?, and When is painting not a painting?

My partner and I said that an object is anything that is tangible and that a painting is any art work created with paint (tools) or painted on (support). And as art is what the creator claims it to be, a painting could not be a painting when the artist says so. I have also posted answers from classmates. Additionally, we talked about found objects in our everyday lives. Whether it be on billboards or advertisements we are constantly absorbing images.

The artist I researched was Becky Suss and it was partially because her name sounds really cool. But her artwork did not disappoint! I found that her artwork was of everyday rooms, but she does not try to make it look truly realistic there is still are cartoon feel to the painting

In 1980, Suss was born in Philadelphia where she still resides. She met with a write Kate Krazcon and explained examining “space, nostalgia, class, and the transporting nature of art and decorative objects” through this simultaneous existence of documentary and art. Which was just beautiful.

~ WORD PAINTING.

From the previous exercise, we joined groups and piled together all the words that we had written for homework and discussed them. We took into consideration mood, font, scale, legibility, tone, colour palette, lighting, and how all these factors added to and/or manipulated the meaning of the words. I decided that I would create my word painting using the word “DRIP,” as I liked the way it looks, as well as the fact that it was onomatopoeic.

With our words selected, for homework we were asked to ourchase a few colours of construction paper, using which we created our word into a 3D model or sculpture (also called a maquette), which would become the subject matter of our paintings - essentially, a still life. As I was using the word “DRIP,” I tried to find the most vibrant and bold green, blue, and yellow paper I could, as I wanted my still life to look like dripping toxic waste. Once this was done, we set up our still lifes, and using various lighting techniques, played with the darkness and form of shadows. As I was doing a bright painting, I used stark lighting so it would give a sharp, high contrast shadow.

With our still life set up and complete, the next step of our paintings was to create an acrylic tonal underpainting using grisaille or colour, on top of light to mid-grey opaque ground.

“ Underpainting, or "Dead coloring" as it was referred to in the past, is a term used by the old masters of the Renaissance and Baroque eras to describe the first layer of paint. The ini tial layer was done in monochrome (often Umbers, Siennas, Ochres, ie browns) or reduced color, also called a grisaille. Grisaille is when artists would underpaint in greys (Gris = Grey) before glazing colour over the top. “

The purose of this was to fix the tonal relationships and composition before additional layers of paint are applied to give color and texture.

Once this was done, we began using glazing to build and colour our work, by mixing oil paint with a lot of medium to add vibrancy and depth to our work. We continued this process for several lessons as well as homework, until our paintings were complete, and we were satified with the end results.

The artist that my group and I worked with was specifically John Beldassari. John Beldassari had an interesting art journey (as I have reposted), but I really appreciate the most recent work. His text work contradicts that expectations of beauty that has been placed on “art” and society in general. He simply paints words and allows a moment of free association to to his audience. For example, in his “pure beauty” painting, I was challenged to understand what “pure beauty” is in art and the real world. I was faced with the questions; What constitutes pure? What constitutes beauty? Do I also have my own bias/stereotypes? This artist was very thought provoking and so my group was extremely intrigued.

Our piece, “GUNK”, took this inspiration and put a spin on it. We made the display itself very simple in order to create a thinking atmosphere. In addition, the word took a good amount of space to exaggerate the filth the is captured in the word. We also used a textured medium to make the words appear gooey, sticky, or filled with garbage. I really enjoyed this exercise and I cannot wait for my finished individual word art.

Wayne White is an American artist, art director, illustrator, puppeteer, and much, much more. Born and raised in Chattanooga. In 1986, Wayne became a designer for the hit television show Pee-wee's Playhouse, and his work was awarded with three Emmys. His most successful works have been the world paintings featuring oversized, three-dimensional text painstakingly integrated into vintage landscape reproductions. The message of the paintings is often thought-provoking and almost always humorous, with Wayne pointing a finger at vanity, ego, and his memories of the South. Wayne has been traveling the country delivering an incredibly entertaining hour long talk where he discusses his life and work, while making time for a little banjo and harmonica playing.

Josh Smith

Josh Smith is a New York artist who does very expressive and abstract paintings, as well as collage and sculpture. He became well known as a result of his series of paintings that depicted his name painted in a abstract form. He mentions that his ontent in his work is to "The message is indefinable, but the gist of it is; we are alive and here together....Here is a group of painted poems if you like...take a look and absorb what you want from them"

Agatha Gothe-snape is an Australian artist born in 1980. Some of her more famous works include POWERPOINTS, a lifelong series that she continually works on. With these pieces, she draws influence from concrete poetry, color field painting, and the emergence of the internet. Gothe-snape often explores emotional and historical responses to the reception of art and has exhibited in some major international biennales.

For part 1 of our painting exercise, we researched some artists who use text in their work. In regards to the perimeters of the assignment, our paintings should reflect on mood and how the text is played into the context, materials, process, effect and intent.

A great artist to look at is Glenn Ligon, who says “it’s not about me, it’s about we.”

He was born in the Bronx, and is still living and working in NY. His paintings draw of writings and speeches of many diverse figures. Essentially he reveals the ways in which slavery, the civil rights movement, and sexual politics inform our understanding of American society.

Some of his techniques include silkscreening, neon and photography. He layers text in an abstract way we’re it becomes difficult to read but exemplifies the context of layering meaning.

John Baldessari

Many of John Baldessari’s paintings would consist of faces covered with a circle, a ribbon, a scissor, and many more peculiar items. He did this to make people focus on things that are usually put out of focus. We focus on faces and create our opinions based on how people but he wanted people to think outside of the box. Those works were created around 1953 and he was unsatisfied with his work therefore he proceeded to cremating them. From there he began word paintings he used this so that people could create there own meaning of the word without drawing it out for them. For example he painted the word “pure beauty” he wanted people to think of the constructs of beauty and think of the true identity of the word pure beauty. He wanted his word paintings to be a subjective experience that made people think outside of how they normally would when looking at a painting.

Eve Fowler was born in 1964 and most of her art exhibitions are displayed in this most modern time. As for her word art, she used a 2 dimensional approach. She works with billboards, posters, prints and signs. And uses a variety of mediums: neon, paint, and vinyl (sound). In her collaborations with other artists, she ventures out into filmmaking, sound pieces and installations.

Jon Campbell is an Australian artist who has become a significant figure in Australian Pop Art. He makes contemporary word paintings with bright colors and intentionally makes the letters large and illegible. His letters are primarily geometric and he uses the technique of color blocking create contrast. Different spaces have unique colors to make them stand out

JON CAMPBELL.

In groups of three, we had to reserach an artist, and create a work inspired by them. As I was working with Tim and Patrick, our group has strong graphic capabilities, and so we decided to create a work inspired by Jon Campbell, which can be seen here:

What stood out to us as a group about Campbell’s work was not only the colours he used or the sharp angualar lines at times of his letters, but the common yet odd words and phrases he would select to be the subject matter of his works. For this reason, we used the phrase “I’m Hungry,” and through the masking technoque created the letters before using four different shades we mixed to paint onto our canvas in an ombre manner.
