why is it always a male character going mad avenging his dead wife and never a female character cradling her dying pure of heart husband in her arms then dragging the whole world down with her
First of all, this is a very clever use of this gif. Secondly, fuck you.
The thing about Kate and Sam is that the love was there and it actually did change things. Maybe they couldn't get a happy ending, but their love saved two boys from certain death. The love was there and it changed everything and nothing.
Sam and Kate haunt the narrative of Holes in such an interesting way and I really wish people brought them up more as an example.
Our main character vaguely knows of one through legend, the other has been completely lost to history. Their love is the reason for the story's resolution, it lingers even after their deaths.

in the movie holes the poem kate and sam bond over is edgar allan poe's annabel lee which is about a person mourning their lover who died young and was "stolen away from them" and it ends with the lines "and so by night tide i sit by the side of my darling my darling, my life, and my bride, in her sepulcher by the sea, in her tomb by the sounding sea" and in the movie years after sam is killed and kate is at the end of her life she goes back to the lake (which is now completely dried up) and she finds sam's boat, the boat he died in, and lays down next to it drawing a perfect parallel the poem and making me want to yell everytime i think about it
i honestly cant get over that one scene in Holes where Kate is reading the poem Annabel Lee to a student and Sam interjects and finishes the line and she looks over at him lovingly because their story is literally the story Annabel Lee
It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea,
(the town by the lake that sam and kate live in)
That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of Annabel Lee; And this maiden she lived with no other thought Than to love and be loved by me.
(obviously sam and kate)
But we loved with a love that was more than love— I and my Annabel Lee— With a love that the wingèd seraphs of Heaven Coveted her and me.
(the richest man in town was jealous of sam’s and kate’s love)
And this was the reason that, long ago, In this kingdom by the sea, A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling My beautiful Annabel Lee;
(here’s the twist though: sam is annabel lee)
But our love it was stronger by far than the love Of those who were older than we— Of many far wiser than we— And neither the angels in Heaven above Nor the demons down under the sea Can ever dissever my soul from the soul Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
(self explanatory)
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side Of my darling—my darling—my life and my bride, In her sepulchre there by the sea— In her tomb by the sounding sea.
(the last scene of kissing kate is her sitting by sam’s boat in the middle of the dried up lake, his sepulchre by the sea)

These are the facts: The Walker boat smashed into Sam’s boat. Sam was shot and killed in the water. Katherine Barlow was rescued against her wishes. When they returned to the shore, she saw Mary Lou’s body lying on the ground. The donkey had been shot in the head. That all happened one hundred and ten years ago. Since then, not one drop of rain has fallen on Green Lake.
You make the decision: Whom did God punish?

HOLES (2003) dir. Andrew Davis
the poetic cinema in the movie Holes when it shows Kate Barlow in the schoolhouse and drops of water are falling on the book she’s reading and you think the roof is leaking again even though Sam fixed it but then it shows that it’s actually because she’s crying and then Sam walks in and looks at her tear stained face with the softest expression and says, “i can fix that.”
The subplot of Holes was hands down the greatest love story of our generation
I just love this pair… -weeps forever-
