Hi. In this post....I will be analyzing the music video and lyrics of Ongentoro by avogado6. Translations and romanizations by me, unless otherwise specified. Warning: this is quite long for a Tumblr post (4.5k+ words), and contains a lot of links. And bad jokes.
Title
音源吐露 (ongentoro) is a title pun, which makes it difficult to translate. vgperson calls it "Synth Expression" on her website. "Voicebank Speaking Out" is what the YouTube video claims it's called in English, but I don't like this one.
Avogado6 loves title puns (hey, I do, too!). Their demo song for Calogado, OREMO UTAU, is a title pun. (OREMO is a program used to record UTAU voicebanks, but "OREMO UTAU" in Japanese — as 俺も歌う — means "I'll sing, too." Calogado uses watashi as a personal pronoun, but the program isn't called WATASHIMO but that would be funny.) A song they made with v flower, へる (Heru), is also a title pun (heru means to diminish but could also be "hell." Both meanings are used in the song).
オンゲントロ (ongentoro spelled in katakana; link is region-blocked) is a term that mainly prevails in the Japanese vocalsynth community. It's a youkai that utters the spell "don't you want to record a voicebank, too?" (お前も音源を録らないか？, omae mo ongen o toranai ka?)
録る (toru, to record) is inflected in both ongentoro and toranai, but it's still the same base verb. Specifically: toro is in the imperative (commanding you do something) and toranai is in the negative (but after ka, it's used to be like "won't you?" similar to English).
The title of the song is spelled with kanji that mean voicebank (音源, so this one stays the same lol) and expressing how one really feels (吐露, so this one is changed!).
I think Synth Expression is a good translation of the title. I've laid out all the pieces already, so let's put them together: (vocal)synth is a common slang term in the English Vocaloid community used to mean "voicebank;" expression is (obviously) similar to "expressing how one really feels;" but it's also a term used in the UTAU program (and Vocaloid, and related software).
Unfortunately(?), there's no youkai that haunts the English Vocaloid community, but we can change that together.
In General
The main premise is that Calogado (voiced by avogado6) is trying to force Mayoi Heki (voiced by Hasegawa Maigo) to sing so they can turn him into an UTAU.
Music Video: In General
The MV is super cute and I like it a lot. It includes fun rhythm game/visual novel segments that you sadly can't play and just have to stare at forlornly.
When Ongentoro was inducted into the Nico Nico Douga Hall of Fame (100k+ views), avogado6 released an Ongentoro Stalker Solo Practice Video, which is still not a rhythm game because it's a video.
I still like the MV, regardless of its interactivity or lack thereof. I also like how it's monochrome (sans the Stalker Solo text). In general, the visual simplicity is a extreme charm point for me.
More on the topic of video games: the music video starts with a "powering up" SFX as Calogado and Mayoi Heki fly onto the screen. When Mayoi Heki's calling the police, an action command shows up above him. The end of the video has a game over SFX!
In general, I love the video game motif. The song 100% sounds like it could be from a video game, even LOL. This was most certainly intentional — Calogado finds stalking Mayoi Heki just like a fun video game. Ooh, how many hits is it gonna take to beat Mayoi Heki as the boss!?
During Calogado's part of the hook, the background shows spinning folders. Folders are kinda Calogado's character item — their glasses are even in the shape of a folder!
In Mayoi Heki's, the background shows spinning compasses. These are kinda Mayoi Heki's character item. I find this ironic, since he's canonically bad at directions.
Also, the animation transition from the folders to the compasses (and back) is very smooth. I'm a very huge fan. Anyway, it's time for what you're all here for.

I'm not a native Japanese speaker, but I tried my best. I really did. You may be wondering why I romanized everything myself, despite there being a perfectly acceptable romanization on the Vocaloid Lyrics Wiki.

I like how every verse ends with te or de (which is just voiced te anyway) except for the last one.
ぶち is a prefix that adds emphasis to a verb, making it more strong, violent, or sudden. 盗る (toru) just means to steal — and that's what I originally went with, I changed it to "rip out" which is more forceful and violent. Tangentially related, "to steal" and "to record" are pronounced the same way in Japanese, making for a great pun. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to make this work in English. You can "rip audio" from a video… but it's not the same.
When spelled like 取っ手, totte can mean handle, grip, or knob. Like door handle, for example. Like how Calogado's on the other side of Mayoi Heki's door..!? Though I'm not sure if this was intentional or if I'm slowly going crazy.
Ongentoro makes a few references to The Little Mermaid. The Japanese name of The Little Mermaid is 人魚姫 (ningyohime, mermaid princess).
In the tale, the mermaid's tongue gets cut off by the sea witch, who finds her voice incredibly beautiful. This doesn't happen to Mayoi Heki (or Ariel, in the movie), but it's another reason why I chose "ripping out." By the way: I'll make references to both the original tale of The Little Mermaid and the 1989 movie.
While The Little Mermaid is not about sirens, I can't help but think about sirens here. Commonly portrayed as mermaids in fiction, and meant to lure people to their death by their impossibly beautiful singing voice … there is a connection!
"In 8 morae and around 200 strings" is a reference to a specific reclist created by Kuroshuu (first .txt file). Reclists, short for recording lists, are lists of all the sounds you need to record for a voicebank*. A mora is the shortest unit of timing, around the same time as a syllable, but importantly not a syllable.
Since there are a lot of sounds to record, reclists are broken up into strings of varying mora length. Kuroshuu's 8 morae list method has 8 morae in each string, and really moreso around 150 strings but I guess 200 is close enough to 150. Calogado loves Kuroshuu's 8 morae list method.
The "recipe" here refers to the steps to create an UTAU…but this is also a reference to The Little Mermaid. In The Little Mermaid, the sea witch follows a recipe with a bunch of disgusting ingredients (in the tale, her tongue is included in this too, but in the movie, it's just an abstraction of her voice). This creates a potion that she gives to the mermaid.
The potion the sea witch gives is for gaining human legs, but Mayoi Heki (presumably) doesn't need this because he (probably) has human legs. His pants are long enough to the point where they drag behind him, though, so really it's anyone's guess what's under there.
Calogado is the sea witch, and Mayoi Heki's the mermaid, but I feel like this is kind of obvious. In the movie, Ursula stalks Ariel, but she doesn't know it — conversely, Mayoi Heki knows he's being stalked by Calogado. Also, interestingly, Calogado has a mole on the left side of their face, like Ursula. (and me, I also have a mole on the left side of my face. room for one more?)
As the sea witch, Calogado obviously wants to trick the mermaid Mayoi Heki into giving up his voice.
*I came up with that definition myself, but I really wanted to link that website since it has a lot of useful definitions and other fun UTAU stuff too.

Same thing happens here with the first three verses ending in te/de, except it comes with an extra verse.
来ないで means "don't come," but I didn't find that forceful enough. It's unnatural to exclaim in English, too.
なりゆき refers to the course of events or result of something. It could also be "by chance," but I highly doubt it's being used here to mean that. It's also an abbreviation for market order, but I highly highly doubt this one. いつもなりゆき could then be like "this is always the course of events." I've chosen to translate this quite differently, though, because the literal translation is pretty vague (what ends up this way?). See, translation is mostly just translating literally and then rewriting thousands of times until it sounds good.
The course of events refers to, probably, how Mayoi Heki always rejects Calogado's advances incessant demands of "won't you record a voicebank, too?" even though Calogado's been pressing him tens of thousands of times. So, "I'll never change my mind."
"Come knocking" is — as you probably know — an idiom meaning to arrive unannounced, but it's also literal since Calogado is knocking extremely forcefully on Mayoi Heki's door. You may not believe me, but this verse was the most difficult thing to translate.
幾星霜 is a poetic way of saying "over many years." 星霜 (seisou) means "year" but it's a combination of the kanji star + frost. The idea is that "lots of stars have risen" and "lots of snow has fallen."
An onmyouji exorcises youkai (and also does other stuff), and Calogado is of course an Ongentoro youkai. (The sea witch and an Ongentoro youkai?! Can Mayoi Heki catch a break?) This reading will be elaborated on in a second.

This whole segment is a reference to this tweet — and more specifically, the second picture. It's the exact same words! Calogado's saying the "Do you want to become an UTAU too? / … / How's this design?" part; the text below them is "The Ongentoro youkai is always after you!" and the text after that is "let yourself be tricked by it (but not too much)!" So, once again, Calogado's being portrayed as an Ongentoro youkai.
That tweet's over a year old, now. I wonder how long Ongentoro's been cooking. Has avogado6 had the idea for a year? or did they just think referencing a tweet they made was funny? Is Hasegawa Maigo the unnamed Voca-P here!?
The text in the background marqueeing (in the video) is veeery slightly edited (from the tweet): UTAU県警からお知らせ ギ○ファイル便 ・g○○gle drive・Dropb○xなどでWAV送れは詐欺です！※場合に寄ります 勧誘に注意しましょう！(UTAU kenkai kara oshirase gi*fairubin g**gle drive dropb*x nado de WAV okure wa sagi desu! *baai ni yorimasu kanyuu ni chuui shimashou!)
Translation. Announcement from UTAU Prefecture police: Sending .wav files via Gigafile-bin, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc., is a scam! (on a case-by-case basis) Let's exercise caution around solicitations!
すぐ帰れ might be translated more literally as "leave right now!" or "leave immediately!" but those 1. don't sound forceful enough (again) 2. don't sound like something someone would say in this situation (a bit too stiff?) 3. don't flow that good. The point of this line is that Mayoi Heki's exasperated, more or less, and I think "leave me alone" captures that idea well.
手入力 (tenyuuryoku) means "manual input" — 手 (te) means "hand," so it is as literal as you can get. However, 手元 (area around the hands) is used here instead because Mayoi Heki's sleeves are too long. Initially, I was going to translate this as "I'm calling 110," but I feel "dialing" is more akin to the meaning of "manual input;" it evokes the idea of pressing numbers on a keypad.
110 is the police number in Japan, so, like, 911. I didn't want to Americanize it, so I left it alone. I was thinking about changing it to "calling the police," but I think explaining that 110 is the police number is enough. The ban in hyakutooban is from 番. It's placed at the end of phone numbers (among other things).

出せ is really more like "open up" or "come out" than "give up." The reason I translated it to "give up" here is so it flows nicely into 声を出せ — something like "Open up. Open up! Give up your voice" doesn't work as well. The implication is that Mayoi Heki should "give up" trying to stop Calogado and let them in! Also: in The Little Mermaid, the mermaid literally gives up her voice to the sea witch.
As mentioned previously, Ongentoro comes from ongen + imperative of toru. The imperative (+ causative) form(s) is(are) used here in ongen torasero.

The lyrics are fun here since they all end in e. In Japanese, the "r" and "t" sounds are close together, so they rhyme better here. This pattern is broken by the final line, again.
ぶん (bun) is another way of saying ぶち. Note that these are not synonyms, they are different versions of the same word, like "don't" vs "do not."
Here, torare is being pronounced like dorare. (This is not standard at all and never happens.) Along with the aforementioned bun, this makes ぶん盗られ sound like 分捕られ (being plundered/captured/seized). It's probably just in English, but the word "plundered" sort of connects with The Little Mermaid (plunder > ship > prince was on a ship, and that's how the little mermaid meets the prince).
Below, I put a screenshot of Mayoi Heki's verse (official ustx from the website, 2nd big green button) where you can see the note is ど (do) and not と (to). I am not crazy.
While the Wiktionary article I linked says buchi becomes bun if the verb following it starts with an n or m, neither torare nor dorare start with a nasal. Luckily, in song lyrics you can do whatever you want so this is fine.

This is a list of (not all) the things used to create an UTAU/make music with an UTAU, but you don't need all of these, and there are some things you can substitute with other things (like you can replace OREMO with RecStar).
The witch's house is of course Calogado's house. In the tale, her house is surrounded by polypi and snakes (in the movie, just polypi, along with her eels Jetsam and Flotsam). Also, her house is made out of human skeletons. So I'm glad Calogado's is only surrounded by computer stuff.

The sea witch doesn't meet the prince in the tale, and while she does meet him in the movie (as Vanessa), he never visits her home. This is a 3 minute song that isn't even about The Little Mermaid though so this is probably fine.
沼 is closer to "marsh" than "mire," but in The Little Mermaid, the sea witch is specifically described as living in a mire. It's also a slang term for obsession or addiction, like how Calogado could be described as being addicted to Mayoi Heki's voice. Perchance.
After you've recorded all your voice lines, you have to "oto" them — aka program the files to where UTAU (or other preferred synthesis software) can read them, so your voicebank can actually sing. In other words, it's the process of separating _ああんいあうあい.wav (_aaniauai.wav) into "- あ," "a あ," "a ん," "n い," etc. Its name is derived from oto.ini, the configuration file the software reads from. There can be around 1000 settings you have to configure. Or more, or less, depending.
I would have just thrown a link at you, yes, but I couldn't find any definition I liked.
Overlap is where one note fades into the one after it. You want this to be smooth so the voicebank sounds better!

Calogado's wearing a cape, but they aren't the prince… once more, this is probably fine; Mayoi Heki wears a witch outfit despite not being the sea witch.

The writing at the bottom of the video is hard to read but (probably) says *If you want to implement special phonemes, multiple pitches, appends, etc., recording could theoretically go on forever (※特殊音素や多音階、表情音源を実装したい場合、収録が無限に増える可能性がある, tokushu onso ya taonkai, hyoujou ongen o jissou shitai baai, shuuroku ga mugen ni fueru kanousei ga aru).

I've kind of Americanized this one, because 成仏 is "gaining enlightenment" like attaining nirvana and becoming a Buddha. However, in my defense, it also has a general meaning of "dying peacefully" i.e. resting in peace.

Well, until we're six feet under, it looks like we're in the same boat!
墓まで is "until the grave" but that's not really natural, so I translated it as something less literal. And I could've said "until we die," but I wanted to include a reference to graves like the original verse does. Hence, "six feet under."
運命共同体 is an expression meaning to share a common destiny, or to be in the same boat. The kanji mean fate + cooperative body/community. Mayoi Heki is now in the UTAU community forever, because his voice has been stolen and put into .wav files. And now, it's been distributed to everyone with an internet connection.

This is Calogado (VCV) and Mayoi Heki's demo song (maybe).
連続音 (renzokuon) is the Japanese term for VCV. Literally "continuous sound." By the way, the term for CV is 単独音 (tandokuon). Literally "single sound." Calogado has both a VCV and CV voicebank, but Mayoi Heki only has a VCV so that's why it's not specified here.
"What's a VCV voicebank?" you may ask me, because I haven't explained this and the explanations you get when you look it up are shit.
Firstly, I have to explain what a CV voicebank is. CV (consonant-vowel) voicebanks are made by recording mora one at a time, so instead of ああんいあうあい.wav, you have あ.wav, ん.wav, etc. (you still have to oto these though.) These are very easy to make, but the sound isn't as smooth as a VCV.
VCV (vowel-consonant-vowel) is smoother than CV since the vowel (or nasal ん) of the previous note is used for the start of the next note. For example, ohayo would be phonemized as [- o] [o ha] [a yo]. In CV, this would just be [o] [ha] [yo].
Since you have to oto 7 different times for the same mora, VCV is more time-consuming. But it's all worth it for the nameraka overlap.

Surprisingly, CVVC does seem easier to record than CVC despite there being more letters in CVVC. I wouldn't know though because I've never tried that.

Yes, 原音設定 (genon settei) is what the English UTAU community refers to as otoing. Literally "fundamental tone settings." It's fun finding out how much Japanese UTAU terms differ from English ones LOL.

A. Thanks to the work of volunteers, you can make an UTAU even from your phone. Don't run away.
Boimero exists (on Apple and Android), but it has ads, so I don't like it that much. For Android users (and iOS users who have MacOS), there is an OpenUTAU mobile port. There are also UTAU synthesis programs that work from your browser (well, I only know of one, Utalet … it's a little slow). By the way, UTAU made completely on a mobile device are called mobileloids.
Ongentoro Stalker Solo Practice Video Description Translation
From Niconico Douga shorts. I don't think the description is on YouTube LOL. I was kind of surprised, seeing that Niconico Douga had shorts, but maybe I shouldn't be that surprised.

当作品のせいで音源を録ったという、UTAUの輪を広げたい人間として嬉しい声も届いております。

I thought this would be something I would only like — kind of an inside joke with myself — but I've seen many people listen to Ongentoro and create derivative works which fills my heart with so much emotion. I've even seen people say they created an UTAU because of Ongentoro. As a person who wants to expand the UTAU community, I am so happy my voice has also reached them.
I intend on sharing a lot more ways to get into UTAU in the future, so everyone can get into it.
By the way, it might take a little bit, but I'm also working on eventually pushing Ongentoro onto streaming services.
Let's get people who use streaming services to enter the UTAU rabbit hole too.

While I was writing this, an Ongentoro Remix by Hasegawa Maigo came out. It's very cool, so I recommend listening to it. The title 音源吐露(もう音源は懲り懲Remix), ongentoro (mou ongen wa gorigo rimikkusu) is a pun blending gorigori (being sick of) and rimikkusu (remix). An English translation might be… "I'm Sick of UTAU-ification Alremix," blending "already" + "remix."
