Before we start let me just set something straight. I’m also basing this theory on a headcanon of mine, which is that both Junk and the ronin have a sort of demon spirit within themselves, and the Hells release style does literally that, it unleashes bits of the demon within themselves. Otherwise, the hells release wouldn’t work, because other people don’t inhabit demons in their souls. Well, that or the Jigoku Katana itself is a demon, er a demon trapped within the katana. Crazy I know, but is it really?

Ever find it odd how Gensai’s only students( that we known of, of course) were Junk and the ronin? And ok, yes the fighting style gensai taught was very special and probably a secret(and illegal?) but I mean why? Why choose Junk and ronin in the first place? Ronin was basically a nobody, just a dirty orphan with no past and no future, and Junk, well, well get to that in a little bit. Why these kids specifically?
Hyuga is a world filled with magic, we can’t deny that. There are spell casting shugenjas, spiritual planes where different souls can meet and interact, and demonic spirits. Actually, come to think of it, it seems that the world in which Hyuga resides in is totally based on spiritual shit. Is it really a stretch to insinuate that these two had malevolent spirits stirring within them?
My theory is that both Junk and Ronin were selected specifically by Gensai because of the power they carry within their souls: a demon.
Don’t call me crazy just yet!! I mean, wouldn’t you need to have a strong mind to withstand the power harnessed by the Jigoku? I personally think that the Jigoku could drive anyone mad, in fact even kill an average person.
Wait a minute, what if Junk’s craziness not only comes from using the Jigoku Itto Ryo, but from childhood trauma as well? Their unhealthy devotion to the ronin? Strong fatherly affection towards Gensai?

You proposed that Junk was probably from a middle/high class family, which would explain his speech and writing skills. I agree with you, as I doubt Gensai taught them that, because our ronin canonically doesn’t share the same abilities.
But where are their parents? Did they disown them for tarnishing their family’s reputation by learning a forbidden technique? Was Junk so cold hearted as to abandon their kin for power? Or did they play a part in ending their lives..?
Hundreds of theories, but lets go over that last one.
The Jigoku style isn’t something to take lightly. It’s a mass murder technique that can be dangerous not only for other people but for it’s wielder as well. If word got out that Gensai was teaching such a technique the government would likely have put an end to Gensai. So Gensai needed to recruit loyal students, or at least make sure that young demon-possessed Junk and Ronin wouldn’t betray him. What to do, what to do, a test that would prove loyalty to power and independence, hmm, like say, kill all the people nearest to you?
Ronin has said various times that the faces of the child orphans haunt their dreams at night, but what exactly are they referring to? The dirty poor kids they grew up with, as a remembrance, or perhaps the faces of the children they murdered?
Imma just say it: Ronin killed all the orphans to gain power, feeding the demon within to give them more control over the forbidden technique, and Junk killed their family, for the same reason. Since this happened at a young age(let’s say 10-12), and done probably unwillingly, it really messed up Junk’s mind, corrupting it in a way. That was would explain Junk’s obsession with the ronin and their fatherly bond with Gensai(but of course that could be that he had a bad/no fatherly figure growing up but hush hush)
This is crazy and very dark, even for Junk. Also since it’s based on a headcanon as well, it makes it even less likely. But idk, it’s the headcanon I’ve always kinda believed, since there wasn’t another I could have went by.
But hey! If you guys have any other theories as to the ronin and junk’s origins and history with Gensai please let me know! It’s such an untouched subject not only in the SoH stories but also in the fandom.
