TEAM AVATAR is a fanzine dedicated to the legendary animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Organized by @pichikui (Baby-Sitters Club #9) and @ngoziu (Check, Please!), this zine focuses on the theme of friendship throughout the series. The zine features colorful comics and illustrations from nineteen incredible artists. Whether you’re a long-time fan, or a recent recruit from this summer’s Netflix drop, everyone will find something to enjoy!

All proceeds from the sale of this zine will go to The Okra Project, an NYC grassroots organization that provides hot meals and additional assistance to Black trans folks.

Summary: Jack keeps seeing the same cute stranger in line at the coffee shop. Should he just say hi? The universe is sending him mixed messages.  Also on AO3…

It happens like this.

Jack is always walking into Luscious Lattes in time to be fifth in line. Jack knows he’s on schedule when he sees his usual gang, his stranger friends. He doesn’t know who they are, but they see one another regularly. There’s comfort in the routine for Jack, and this motley crew has become, well, his morning crew.

There’s Red Backpack, who orders a triple espresso and looks like he’s always on the verge of tears; there’s Curly Hair and her chai lattes; Mr. Toque, who always wears one even in the summertime, and then there’s Cowlick. Cowlick, who is usually third in line ordering his macco-choco-whatevers with extra whipped cream. Cowlick, who always has music blaring from his headphones, immediately takes a sip of his drink, licking whip cream from his straw before exiting the coffee shop. Cowlick, who wears tiny shorts and has great legs.

Cowlick.

Jack tries not to think about Cowlick too much—how he has a honeyed accent, eyes the color of Luscious Lattes’ coffee beans, or how he always dances a little while he’s waiting in line. Jack’s just there to get coffee, after all.

By the time Jack goes up to order, Cowlick’s coffee is ready. Cowlick grabs it from the counter, licks his straw, and is off, leaving Jack sighing to himself like some sort of Regency heroine pining her life away.

I've re-read Demon of the Underground like half a dozen times and only recently realized that Annie (the ferret) is slipping off Pogo's shoulder in that last panel.

I'm going to do a longer post soon for an assortment of panels I love while hopefully not revealing too many spoilers.

Reasons you should read DOTU:

- it is visually stunning

- it is funny/sweet/sad/dark -- sometimes all on the same page

- diverse LGBTQIPA* cast doing badass things like blowing things up. (Literally. Jordana is an explosives expert and I love her)

- complex and well-planned world-building

- have I mentioned it's visually stunning? This comic is gorgeous

- one of the supporting characters, Merritt, has his own trilogy of prequel books that are posted to patreon for the $2/month tier and it is soooo fucking good I want to rip my hair out! (See previous posts over the past week about how book 2 ch 21 broke my damn brain)

- Pogo (in the sample above) just really wants to get laid and for all of his new friends to get along and it's just not happening. Mostly he wants to get laid. And not murder anyone.

- Annie is the perfect guard-ferret

- Belmont (from the prequel books) made his first appearance on the most recent page and let me tell you... I'm not sure a fictional character exists that I love more than that trash disaster of a man. He sucks so much and I LOVE HIM lol

- this comic is beautiful and so many details go into every page I can't even wrap my head around it

- Balbo and Ellis are two characters who have only appeared in the prequel books so far but I love them so much.

- This comic is fucking gorgeous and so good. I can't wait to see what happens next!!!

I'll leave you with this other slightly spoilery panel of Annie being her best guard-ferret self. She's the hero that we need, but we honestly don't deserve her.
