he still cannot believe this relic was a person. a living, breathing person — well, living was debatable, of course. he knows what she is immediately — that pallor, the red eyes, the way she'd been locked away for a millennia and has not become a draugr. babette, if she had the chance to become any older. “ yes. let's get you out of here. ” please don't eat me. he thinks, offering to hold her upright on their way out of the tomb.

the moon is high in the sky when they eventually surface, and out of reflex, he pulls his hood over his head as soon as the air hits his face. not because he's cold, but to hide his identity from anyone who may recognize him. “ let's see, there's.... ” he looks around, only his eyes visible as he scans the terrain around them. a bandit camp must be nearby. “ let's look around a little bit. there must be something you can... eat. ” a mostly friendly seeming vampire that wasn't babette. he'd seen stranger things, he supposed.

getting out was easy enough. she recalls it was the same as getting into the large cavern that housed her all these years. the bodies that litter the floor indicate that it'd recently become much harder. something must be happening. they were looking at her. wearing her colors. either everything was resolved between her parents or , for worse , her father had found her. still , they venture forth together. it'd be best that vax doesn't take offense to the fact that she refuses his help. what little control she has is held by the tightest piano wire ready to break with any more tension.

the air is crisp. it hurts her lungs but in the same way a cold breeze stings the cheeks. in a way that reminds you you're here. better than the dank and heavy air of the cavern. giving the elf a glance , she considers his words. " you've dealt with vampires before. " a simple observation. based on his lack of running. amongst other things. another deep breath. " there's some elk to the north wandering about. but i'll need more than that if i'm going to feel " and look " normal again. there's [ . . . ] something east. a campfire. multiple people there as well. "

it was a mess. tendons and bones torn from the throat. it'd been so long since she'd lost herself , kept that string of control tightly coiled a piano wire so that they could move through towns swift as shadows. oh how badly it frayed this time [ . . . ] she stays his hands. keeps them from touching her. keeps them from tainting. " it doesn't matter anymore. " there's no time. voices climb in the distance. torches starring the horizon. they'd heard the screams. they'd be here soon to investigate. the dagger kept safe at her side slips from it's holster at her hip. the handle pressed to his palms.

like i want to be so explicitly clear, serana loves. i really feel like she experiences feelings and connections with people deeply because of how she was isolated and abandoned. for someone to come in and show her attention/interst after years of basically being denied it from the people who were supposed to be closest to her, how could you not be expected to treat every crumb as precious? and especially because, you could be the most treacherous being in skyrim and she still vibes with you, i think it's very rare that she comes across someone she doesn't like - weirdly enough. it doesn't mean she falls in love romantically with everyone. like we see in iwtv, as a vampire, her bonds with people are strong and sort of go beyond romantic intimacy. her bond with the dragonborn can be close and intimate without crossing the line into romance. and if it does, that's okay ! it can happen, but the dawnguard quest isn't the prerequisite for that.

and even when she does love someone, she will never marry them (outside of trusted plotting with someone and honestly there's really only one way i can see it happening until proven otherwise) and if you actually listen to her, it isn't even that she's opposed to marrying, it's that she's uncomfortable with the idea that her very existence is a spit in the face of the beings who she would be asking that blessing of. how dare she engage in that? she doesn't have to marry someone for the love she has for them and their partnership to be valid. just the same as she doesn't have to be romantically involved with someone for her bond with them to be important to her and just as meaningful.

yes, she can fall in love. yes, i write romantic ships with people. no, they are not more important to her than her platonic bonds with others. and i can still, forever, appreciate skyrim for not making her a prize and perpetuating that idea.

unpopular opinion: i’m glad that you can’t marry serana. i like that she is just a friend. if you got to marry her after finishing her quest, it would have felt like she was a trophy. a reward instead of a real person. i’m glad that a strong female character is there to just be her own person and not a romance option for the main character. and just because a woman is nice to you and you did something for her, that doesn’t mean that she has to date you.

the moon hadn't quite crested in the sky , so she still had time. they’d agreed :: waiting until the wee hours ( when even the rowdiest drunkards were finished reveling , either asleep or sprawled in the streets ) would give her the quiet and privacy she needed to traipse out and find a meal without being seen. but it couldn't be in town !! that was the rule. none of their people. only brigands or , if they were lucky , someone in the dungeons set to die by dawn.

so she's curled up by the bedroom window , book propped up on one knee for her to read while the castle hums quietly beneath her , stone breathing with the hush of night. @pawnedprince enters the room later than normal. the drained cast of his face says enough :: a long day. the way he collapses beside her , burying his head in her lap , confirms it. serana decides , in that unspoken way lovers do , that she'll make the effort to stay awake during the day tomorrow to help with what she could in the shadows of the castle. relieve him of some burden. for now , she gently brushes the hair from his eyes and bows to press cool lips to his head. from the folds of his blouse ── the one she’s wearing , loose and faintly scenting of him ── comes the muffled murmur :: i love you. you know that , right ??

" serana doesn't think she'd ever be able to properly express to him what those words did. the ice they shattered. the way they reached the quiet , almost forgotten parts of her ── the ones she thought too frostbitten to feel ever since her change. he’d drawn the short straw in their arrangement , she knows this , and yet he loved her still. even if it was only the piece of her he still recognized. the best she could do , she supposes , is return the favor in kind and in full. so he's encouraged to flip around and while she still hovers over him , he's peppered with kisses from his forehead , to his nose , to his eyes and lips. the great beast looms — closer to the moon tonight than in her regular figure , as though the silver orb itself had stooped to witness her itself. at nine feet it turns , ragged and restless , a cathedral of sinew and hunger. viscera slicking its leathery hide , clinging to its bat-born features as naturally as lacquer clings to a lady’s lips. each breath it exhales leaves its maw in steaming ribbons, curling in the cooling night air like smoke from a sacrificial pyre they've broken free from before. and its ears flick. it hears her. smells her. threading through blood and frost , familiar as an old hymn. thank the blood she's alright. something shuffles into view behind serana , catching her attention momentarily as she tenses to defend but relaxes when she recognizes the ruin wearing the memory of a man. he gurgles through a split jaw and torn throat , tongue hanging loose between blood and bone , staggering forward before collapsing in a graceless heap. the earth scarcely claims him before he crumbles , folding into ash. no longer needed. no longer anything. he had served his purpose in the brief cruelty of re-animation.

i know. the words ripple between the folds of @laperlina’s mind [ . . . ] as soft as fingertips tracing the inner whorls of her ears. a presence. a recognition. as if the beast , all grotesque and grotesquely made , had remembered her before it remembered its own name. serana folds her wings in. clawed feet taking a few more steps towards ada before folds of skin begin to slough off. peeling , slipping , piling wetly at her feet in a trail as she nears. piece by dripping piece , the monster sheds itself , until what remains is her :: pale , familiar , unarmored. she who reaches her hand out to the other. lips still closed.

just as a heads up, i've been thinking about it the last couple of days and i'm going to go back to my age old system of "mains get immediate responses" and other mutuals are gonna get regularly queued. THIS DOES NOT MEAN that i value our threads any less, it is mainly just a management system for me to not get overwhelmed while i'm super busy at work and with less time afterwards to actually write before i'm super tired.
